The post no one ever wants to make....
Yesterday morning (Sept 13th, 2023) saw our big boy Bruin take his last car ride with us, he ❤️'d his car rides ..... Sadly the end destination was at our local vet clinic to send him off over the Rainbow Bridge 🌈
5 weeks ago Bruin felt horrible and would not eat for 2 days. This started our journey .... from a night at emerg with gastrointestinal issues, to being picked up the next day presenting with sever rear leg weakness which took us to a more advanced clinic ... he walked out of there with sling assistance and a guarded prognosis. 2 days later the bu**er was running thru the yard barking at the wind lol sadly it was short lived as a handful of days later those read legs were again not functioning.
Off to another Emerg / Specialty clinic where he spent the night after having an MRI which showed up a mass on his spine that was affecting the nerves to his bladder/rear legs etc. Their recommendation was immediately end his life ... we brought him home and asked him to show us his decision ... 2 long days later he was up and moving 50% on his own. In full control of his bladder. So. We kept fighting with him. We saw daily improvements from him over the next 5 days till he was up and moving on his own... with a little "swagger" to his steps but still ... a fully functional dog who was living his best life.
We got 2 full wonderful weeks of him like that after his brave strong recovery 💪. He was back to his usual boisterous big self !
Sadly start of week 5 saw him once again not wanting to eat much then, the morning of the 12th I got him out and down his front step ramp and off he went on his own accord into the rain to trample thru the long wet grass for his morning ritual. Back he came. Chilled for the morning. Mid day saw me take him out and he could not p*e ... tho he wanted to ... this continued thru the afternoon but it also saw his rear end mobility quickly diminishing every hour. Come that evening those back legs gave up the fight to that b$& #& of a mass on his spine.
We spent our final night with him swaddled on pillows and in blankets .. laying with him rubbing his chest and face, singing his song to him (its an Angus original he sang to him the day we picked him up and a true classic!) , we took a late night car ride, then the early morning of Sept 13th we loaded him up for yet another car ride and told him we hear him ... he was done fighting... so we agreed to let him go, way too soon 💔
What is there to say about Bruin ... too much ... as .. he was too much lol from the get go, when we picked him up at the airport in fall of 2016 from his plane ride over from Amsterdam, we knew this big boy was going to be a HUGE presence in our heart and home. And he did not disappoint. He grew into a spectacular specimen of a berner. That giant head. Wide shoulders. Sturdy thick legs. And those paws!! Larger than almost everyone's hands 🐾 🐾 everyone who met him had the same things to say... wow look at those paws!!!!
The only thing bigger than his physical stature was his heart.
This guy had the biggest best heart of them all.
He was loud, the loudest dog i have ever known or owned .. physically, mentally and ... emotionally, he was loud. And we loved it. And our home and hearts are very empty and horribly quiet now.
There will never ever be another Bruin / BruBru / Bru Bear / BoobeeBoobee / Bru / Bru-Crew / BooBoo / Big Lug / My big Boy
But we were blessed with 7 years of Bruin and we would not change a second of it.
Rest easy now big boy. Thank you for all you gave us, taught us and brought to our home and pack of dogs. They all will miss you forever
Until we meet again Bruin. All our love.
