Frequently asked questions are my favorite! Because I have answers! When does training start? Formal training at puppy classes can start as soon as the puppy is fully vaccinated! 16 weeks! Plan ahead and get those classes booked! It makes for a happy family. Now the real answer to that question is that training starts as soon as it is started. Here we start at 3 days old. Scents are offered to puppies starting at 3 days old. We start touching the puppies at 3 days old. This gets them used to touch and scent by the time that they have their eyes open and a whole other world is there for them. At 3 weeks or before depending on the litter we will add a litter box for potty training. We also start desensitizing for grooming using an electric tooth brush. We introduce toys, textures, sounds. We try and empower these puppies with all the confidence that they need to be the best they can be. Some will grab hold and be in for the ride, some will hang back and make you prove to them that you are going to keep them safe. And there are puppies that are right in the middle and change daily. We work really hard to give each puppy what they need to succeed in life. Many of our puppies will leave here at 8 weeks so there is just a short amount of time to instill in them that the world is a good place and people are their best friends. The rest, well that is up to their new families to continue their journey. The puppies that stay here past 8 weeks get daily lessons. That means that we work on the basics of being a good family member. We are learning to sit, shake, down, walk on a leash, and we are starting on lay. They work hard every day and then they play harder! We do have a few of these amazing puppies that are still in search of a family. They are working hard at being great family members for someone lucky enough to share their life! The #1 rule here...If it is not going to be cute when they are 40 or 50 pounds...it is not cute now.

The scariest holiday of the year is coming up - not Halloween, the Fourth of July! Due to loud fireworks, more dogs go missing on July 4th than any other day. Microchips are an amazing recovery tool, but unfortunately, because of yearly fees and confusing platforms, over 50% of microchips are unregistered, which is like having an unengraved ID tag on your collar.

We've partnered with Fi to offer free for life microchip registrations and updates to all - and when you register via the following form, you will be entered to win a Fi GPS collar and one year subscription, the perfect pairing to a microchip! With a Fi GPS collar, you can track your dog in real time and have extra peace of mind - not to mention track their steps and exercise!

Register or reregister your microchip at this link to keep your pup safe and win a Fi collar: https://finano.typeform.com/FiNano?utm_source=1.5 =890

FAQ:

Can I register my chip with Fi even though it's registered elsewhere? Yes! When your chip is searched in the universal database petmicrochiplookup.org, both registrations will show up, but your Fi registration shows as the most up to date and you will never be charged. Your old registration can stay in there, but you can keep your Fi registration up to date for free.

Why do I need a GPS collar if I have a microchip? Microchips are NOT GPS - in order to find your pup via a microchip, someone has to find your dog, bring them to a vet to have them scanned, look up your information, and contact you - that's why the registration is so important!

What did we work on today? Puppies have been working on sitting! They did pretty good especially since they have only heard the command when I see them sit. Then a chest rub while sitting and "good sit". After working on sit while playing I asked them to sit before I gave them dinner.

Last night the puppies each went on a short leash walk. They are rock stars! I can't tell you that they are all trained to heal. I can tell you that they all moved while on a leash and that the cars and headlights were a curious new thing! Loud cars, quiet cars, fast and slow cars most never got a glance. The puppies that did take notice did so with curiosity and not fear. Sorry no video as this was after dark and I can not take video while I am walking a puppy on a leash. I need my hands for other things! Training is a slow labor of love. But once a poodle understands you and what you want they will give it to you. You have to take the time to learn how to speak to a poodle! With a child words have no meaning until you give them the meanings, this is also true for your dog.

Finally all wore out! A happy poodle puppy is a tired poodle puppy!

“Student Vets and Their Pets” showcases different vet students and the amazing animals who inspire them the most!

Jessica Schwartz is a fourth-year student from Arlington Heights, Illinois, interested in practicing in a small animal general practice. During her time on campus, Jessica volunteered with the Illini Service Dogs club, where she met two standard poodles in the program and reached out to the breeder that donated their dogs to the club, and was able to choose one of the pups in the next litter. Jessica found her new best friend, Reese. They enjoy going on runs, hikes and walks in their free time. When asked her favorite thing about Reese, Jessica said she is always down to do anything and brings her goofy personality along every time.

Today was a trip to our vet for puppy shots. Every one is doing well and they all have a clean bill of health.

Puppies were very busy this weekend! We conducted temperament testing. A huge thank you and shout out to for the assistance and videos! We had an amazing group of volunteers that spent a long day here working with and assisting me. It was a long day but we are so excited about how great the puppies did. We have 3 puppies that are going to be placed as service dog prospects! That is amazing. Even more exciting is that we have one more puppy that tested as an amazing prospect to do service dog work. The rest of the puppies will make amazing family members. There are a couple of puppies still looking for families of their very own! Videos of temperament testing are currently available to prospective families!
