Do dogs try to dominate us? No. They are dogs and we are not. They behave like a dog would. Unless you train your dog out of a habit you do not care for, it sure looks like dominance. But it's not. A dog can pick up a habit that concerns us out of board em fear and abuse. I hear from many people about recourse guarding anything a dog wants, that is a not dominance, it's a bad habit that many dogs can learn from other dogs or simply just a dangerous game. Although dogs will learn how to make up for time if left alone too long like chewing furniture etc. Guarding toys or food is basically the same thing but on a much more higher level. Best bet for a resource guarding dog is to teach crate training. A dog can sleep in a crate, eat in a crate, and chew toys in a crate. Dogs are den animals, a crate is a safe place for a dog. Never punish and put a dog in a crate. That association you do not want.

Tip: Standing over a dog you do not know may be asking for a bite. And...leaning down to face level with a dog can mean confrontation. Always proceed with caution. Turn sideways and offer a hand. Never stare a strange dog in the face.
After you ask the owner in all situations.

Tip: A wagging tail does not mean a dog will not bite. A wagging tail often can mean fear or aggression, not just happy. SO never pet a strange dog, always ask first, and proceed with caution then as well.

Tip: Dogs do not respect. But, a well trained dog does wonders for the owner!

Tip: A cool wet wrap around your dogs neck helps keep the dog cooler. Still AC as we want it now dogs do too. I see people walking dogs at noon on sidewalks. This is burning their pads on the feet, I have seen bloody feet being treated at the county shelter. Shade and grass with a cool wet wrap if you must be out with your dog. Water bowl with ice chips is great! But make sure the dog drinks slowly and not too much at once, that could be dangerous.

If you are training your dog a new command do not feed your dog. This way your dog will be motivated to work for you by the treats you use. If your dog is not treat motivated, try a toy. Remember to wash toys, dry them and put them up for a month or so, and when you pull those older toys out they are like new again for your pooch!

As for treats, pieces of plain chicken or small pieces of hot dogs work great! After every training session (keep it shorter for pups) feed your dog and let your pooch rest! NEVER right feed after an intense workout, wait 40 minutes, and watch out for too much water at once as well. Everything should move slowly. Training is not a race. Mix it up. Have fun!
