Contrary to what you have heard..

It's not a gentle nudge to get their attention.

👩‍🏫 If we talk in simplest terms these consequences function so the learner escapes and avoids the stimulus we are applying to them in the future.

🤨Possibly doing the preferred behaviour (because its safe), or shutting down (not doing anything, which sometimes is the goal of the person applying the stimulus).

➡️ Let's say you were driving along, and the navigation told you turn left, and you accidently started turning right. When doing that wrong response.. the passenger in your car just started screaming at the top of their lungs at you, or smacked you on the back of the head.

How would you feel?
Startled? 😨
Physically hurt? 🩹
Deeper than that.. 😰 would you say your body might buzz, shake a little. Your nervous system might be a little shocked from this response from the passenger.

Next time the navigation tells you to turn, that buzzing, shaking sensation in your body returns. Luckily in that moment you know what response will ensure your passenger doesn't yell or hit. But, sometimes our dogs don't know the right response... and they freeze (or fight, flight, fidget... stress responses).

Why corrections are often used (knowing and unknowingly)... because they work. I am not arguing that.

It's the outcome of the results that I am arguing.

Can I do more… or is loving 💗 her enough.

We can get hard on ourself when our dog isn't perfect 😡. But, here are some realistic things I do for my dog that helps her live her best life.

Hope you find some solace 😌 with your fearful dog, as I try with my own dog. It's more soul searching than you might expect.

You and your dog are unique🌟

Training isn't a one size fits all, and we need to base our training on the learner in front of us.

The scary part of social media and the internet is that one video or post a dog trainer posts confirms your own experience with your own dog you are more likely to consider their OTHER training suggestions.

But, those OTHER suggestions might not 🙅 be the RIGHT option for your dog.

NOW… Keep in mind.. Science and EVIDENCE 👩‍🏫 has proven many techniques to be more ethical (and more efficient and effective). This post isn't here to support aversive tools.

But, many topics that are debated in the Force Free and Positive Reinforcement community are nuanced.. and often polarizes the community.

🙄Personally…. I often struggle figuring out what to post here.. Because one suggestion might not be right for every dog that explores my page.

But….. I really want to help dogs and YOU 💖…. And want to consider your budget needs (because you are probably here needing something that is budget friendly).

So.. If you are looking for more accessible training support that is 🖊️PERSONALIZED… Our 🦴Treats Community might be for you :)

📲DM us for more details, and we can hook you up with what membership would meet your training goals and BUDGET.

When I first adopted Peanut I could only afford one training session (thankfully with a competent dog trainer). But there was nothing else that was financially accessible at the time for my dog that was dealing with some complex fear, anxiety and aggression.

I definitely got lost in the desert 🏜 of Google. Making many mistakes along the way. So, I've been making it my mission to learn and get accessible Dog Training Support for folks like yourself.

We can't wait to have you join this amazing hub of dog parents just like you.

Let's be real.. I've been helping dogs for 13 years now.

started as a dog walking company in Toronto West End back in 2011. It all started when I was walking my family dog who lived with my sister at the time when she had late nights at work.

At the time I was a student (in a program I didn't end up finishing) working a part-time job (likely my 20th job) where my manager called me hunny or sweetie.. because he couldn't remember my name.

Well.. becoming my own boss and working with the one thing that gave me joy... dogs.. was my new path to happiness... and to feeling finally significant in this world.

Fast forward.... I loved the job but wanted to support the dogs and future staff more. So I enrolled in ... graduated in 2019. When I started that program I dreamed of this company... WE WORK FOR TREATS...

After adopting peanut.. I needed training support. But financially.. the support I needed was completely out of budget. Business wise I get why it costs what it costs. Dog Training business models are stone age a little.. and frankly not set-up in a way to benefit everyone (not ideal for the dogs, expensive for the owners, and not sustainable for dog trainers).

My brain went to work... how can I provide quality dog training support for those on a budget that actually helps dogs (just as well.. if not better).

I hired staff to cover the dog walking side of things... and got to work. However.. pandemic had different ideas for me. Loosing the financial security of my dog walking business was hard.. but I'm determined to deliver my original vision.

The Treats Community is up and running. Not all parts of it is ready.. but in the coming weeks most of it will be here. Community forum, courses and handouts, workshops and webinars... and access to qualified science and evidence based dog training support.

Get a sneak peak and become a Kibble Krew Member for FREE

We can provide our dogs the world.. and all the treats... if we just know how and have access to it all.

We struggle too.. you aren't alone.

Seriously... navigating life with a dog is so hard.. even for folks who know what they are doing. We can be even worse on ourselves because.. we can argue that we should know this.

But.. its not cut and dry like that. Just because I can counsel other folks doesn't mean I can do the same for myself.

Triggers have layers, just being present is triggering enough.
Common Trigger Parameters.. That might seem unprovoked (the trigger didn't do anything).

- Trigger approaching is triggering.
- Learned history - it's happened before, it could happen again.
Slide 3: Scared dogs bite not dominant dogs.
Alpha/Dominance theory is harmful to dogs. Dog's aren’t biting to gain any hierarchization.
Evolutionary Significance to Aggression: get enough to eat, not be eaten, avoid injury/disease, and reproduce.
Slide 4: No dog bites out of the blue
More often than not, early warning signs are missed/ignored, and even more dangerously… considered 'bad' behaviour and punished.

You Matter Too!

Having a dog is work, we know that. But, we often don't consider the complexities of our own standard of life with dogs that have behavioural struggles. Not only financial and physical costs, but the mental load can cause a huge impact on your standard of life.

This is such an important piece of the puzzle when it comes to the care of our fearful, anxious and aggressive dogs. Your wellbeing is a HUGE priority.

JOIN OUR TREATS COMMUNITY FREE!! A space of like minded individuals who have the same lived experiences as yours, or can empathize and show you compassion around the true struggles you are experiencing.. Because they are valid.

The BC SPCA and UBC are inviting dog trainers in Canada to take part in this research. Here's what they have to say:

We are inviting professional dog trainers in Canada to participate in an online study titled “Survey of dog trainers in Canada” that aims to provide a better
understanding of the dog training profession in Canada, including the services offered, training methods, and beliefs about dogs and dog training. The findings of the survey will be made available by publication in an open access peer-reviewed journal.

This research is carried out by Drs. Protopopova (PI) and Cavalli (Co-I), from the Animal Welfare Program, Faculty of Land and Food Systems, University
of British Columbia; in collaboration with the BC SPCA (British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). If you have any questions about the study, you may contact Dr. Cavalli at
[email protected].

The privacy and confidentiality of survey participants will be strictly protected, and identifying information (such names or emails) will not be collected.

If you are a dog trainer in Canada, we invite you to complete the survey and share the link with other trainers in your network. We ask organizations connected
with dog trainers to share the link with trainers in their network.

❌No is NOT a Cue

👍Yes/Click means nothing without food

We need to remember, that our dog needs to learn words, and to properly learn words we need to provide FEEDBACK in the form of ASSOCIATIONS for them to learn what a word means.

So, if it seems like your dog isn't listening it is likely that they don't know what you are saying.

If you want to learn more about how to build association to your words and what they mean. We go into this in the MINDFUL DOG CHALLENGE.

🥰🥰🥰 Building your Dogs Community has so many benefits. If you struggle with your dog being ok with friends and family members coming over to your home. This course is for you.

Maria Adams took Academy graduate Nicole Barnett of We Work for Treats's course, “Building My Dog's Community: Stranger Danger Guide”, and had this to say.

Who would this course be the most useful for? This course would be good for the average pet owner, who has no background in training, and who has a nervous dog.

What was your favorite part of the course? I liked that there was very simple step by step instructions, which would be easy for an average pet owner to follow.

What do you think your dog liked best? Both my dogs already had these skills so they loved the extremely easy snacks!

You can find this course here: https://we-work-for-treats.teachable.com/p/building-my-dog-s-community-stranger-danger-guide

Join us for a 12 day Mindful Dog Challenge starting in July 1st.

Challenge only available in July.

Each day you will get little exercises for not only your dog, but for you as well!.. and can guarantee by the end of the 12 days you will feel more grounded and connected with your dog.

Most dog problem behaviours are just problems for us!

Dog behaviour serves a function to our dogs:
1. Because its fun
2. Genetics and buggy evolutionary software
3. Ask for social distance or get things to stop

When is your dogs behaviour a problem?
1. Dog is experiencing chronic stress
2. Safety for both dogs, you, your family and the community
3. Possibly needs to see a vet (pain, discomfort, medical problem??)

Of course.. That is not to say you have to deal with your dogs nuisance behaviour. But, the goal of this post is to just say.. HEY… if you feel shame or guilt that your dog is a certain way. Just rest assure its so normal!

I give you permission just to lean into your dogs behaviour, and not work on it!

Finding the RIGHT dog trainer can be hard.

1. You should be able to question your dog trainers methods without hesitation.

2. Media and Internet is murky on dog training. You are doing everything right to the best of your knowledge.

3. I've been there.. and know! I PROMISE all dog owners to treat them ethically and humanely just as I would your dog.
