Shelter to Shelter: A Rescued Dog's Journey to Thru-Hiking Dixie, a rescued German Shorthaired Pointer, has begun her training to thru-hike with Mommy. Here, you can follow her journey as she lives and learns.

Dixie is a German Shorthaired Pointer that we rescued from Popcorn Park Zoo almost 2 years ago. When I went out to South Dakota and left her here in New Jersey with Daddy...she was so mad at me. She promised to carry her own water and supplies. I carry her food and treats in the bear vault. This page is the story of her journey...told from point of view...to train for thru-hiking. I September, she

will hike the Centennial Trail in South Dakota with me and a friend. The entire trail is 111 miles. For safety reasons...and because dogs are not allowed...she is not allowed on the last mile up Bear Butte. I did that last year...wouldn't want her to try. So, she will hike 110 miles...over 10 to 12 days. We have been hiking the Batona Trail...a 53 mile (or so) trail the the New Jersey Pine Barrens. She's met so many wonderful people...so feel free to say "Hi" is you see us.
