Nearly 3 years into our journey together, we have the kind of bond and trust that allows us to work together like this. ❤️

We've recently begun taking dressage lessons again. I really want to see if they are paying off, so we entered all of the introductory tests this weekend. Sam has a great foundation & the dressage lessons are helping me to finesse her talent. Against 8 riders, Sam took 1st in all 3 dressage classes. I am most thrilled that we have improved our free walk & the judge even commented that she was stretchy. Last year, we earned 4s and 5s for our movements. This year, we are earning 6s and 7s. Sam was a good listener and active partner through our hunter classes too. She was extremely motivated for her equation O/F course and took 2nd. Sadly, I have no videos and the best action shots are of El setting (& jumping) jumps from yesterday.

I have a regal and distinguish Oldenburg mare who knows how to eat a tart apple like a champ! 🤣

How smart is this horse you ask? Well she is wicked smart. In my last dressage lesson, my trainer recommended increasing the amount of back up work to help with weak stifle joints. At first the work was going really well. She was backing the length of the arena with even steps and an even pace. However, our progress took a turn yesterday.

So, what changed? Well, this smart girl figured out how that she is stronger than me & decided she is done with this back up BS. This sensitive mare who used to back up with a gentle wiggle of the reins basically threw up the middle finger at me and flat out refused to move despite any pressure. Ugh...

So, I do some thinking... Maybe it's the bit, so I swap it out. Nope... Maybe I need someone on the ground while I'm in the saddle. Nope... Then I think, what happens if I try to back her up in a halter on the way to turn her out for the evening. Will I get the same resistance? Nope! My sweet, gentle mare backs her a$$ up half way across the parking lot with nothing but finger pressure on the lead. 🤦‍♀️

Guess our back up work will be in the parking lot from now on... 🤷‍♀️

Hey mom, the grass is greener over there!

Sam had a great day meeting Sally Dietrich, a Michigan based saddle fitter and dressage rider. Sally was able to adjust the flocking in my saddle (on site) to make the saddle fit Sam's growing body and then watch me ride to make sure I sit the saddle properly & Sam's body moves freely. No pictures of the actual fitting, just a picture of a happy rider & a happy horse. 😊
