Our new girl, Purdy, needs your love and support!
Purdy recently had given birth to four puppies who secured rescue placement elsewhere but she was still in need. HOABCR has a special place in our hearts for Mamas and never wants to leave one behind so we said YES! We had her intake pen ready with a warm bed and a new blanket of her very own. After our two amazing volunteers picked her up, it was clear that something wasn’t right. Purdy was out of it, hot to touch and unable to stand or walk. Fearing advanced mastitis and possible sepsis, we immediately changed plans.
Blue Pearl Emergency Vet said they could see her if we got her there right away and were ready and waiting when Purdy arrived. On arrival at the hospital it was clear our girl was in trouble - a temperature of 105.6, a dangerously low white blood cell count, a severe case of parvovirus and a secondary bacterial infection in her ravaged intestines.
For the next 60 hours, Purdy fought for her life while emergency doctors used every possible remedy. Her temperature was near normal after 48 hours, but her prognosis still was guarded.
12 hours later a glimmer of hope appeared when Purdy perked up and became interested in her surroundings. She was still critically ill with bloody diarrhea and a tube in her nose down to her stomach, nausea and unable to eat.
After another 12 hours, she was able to walk out to potty, and she ate a tiny amount of baby food. Purdy is not out of the woods yet, but she continues to make steady progress and we are hopeful she will fully recover. We are thankful that Purdy arrived when she did -- a few more hours, and she could have crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
From the moment we met her through every moment of her life threatening illness, Purdy has been stealing hearts with her sweet, soulful eyes and kind heart. We are so happy she is ours, and that we have access to amazing vet partners. But the reality is that Emergency Care and hospitalization is expensive. Purdy needs your help. We need your help. We hope to raise $9,000 to cover Purdy’s 96 hours in the hospital.
We are grateful that our good friends Carol and Terry have offered a $3,000 matching grant to get us started.
