This doesn't take magic. It doesn't require treats or that nonsense "pure positive" training. This takes leadership, discipline, and setting an example. It requires common sense and establishing boundaries. Sadly, modern dog training has become too much about cuteness and infantalizing animals. We cannot "Let dogs be dogs" because they don't understand the world the way we do and they never will. If your dog trainer doesn't work in a fashion that helps your dogs to see you as the leader, or if your dog trainer makes you feel guilty for correcting unwanted and dangerous behaviors both at home and in public, you're working with the wrong dog trainer.

I don't know how many clients I've gone to work with and they tell me sheepishly that they got the puppy as a "practice child" for the actual child that is currently growing in the woman's tummy. Like I'm supposed to be jumping for joy that you've just increased the likelihood that you'll not do the work because of how rightfully tired, frustrated, emotional, exhausted and anxious you are. I've seen some of the dogs end up well adjusted but I've seen many more households who simply rehome the puppy or even the grown adult dog because "It's just too much work." For shame. People like that should never ever be able to own a dog again. Ever.

We highly recommend against dog parks. This diagram is a good explanation why.

The way Zak said "Stopppp easy easy easy" like he was talking to a three year old child! This is why I tell people that Pure Positive and Force Free training are a lie. They're gaslighting dog owners to treat their dogs like actual human children. They are animals and they will always be animals. If you watch how that dog nips at the other? And he's talking to it almost soothingly? Wild.

Sorry for the video quality! Today was the first day that BowBeans, my German Shepherd, has ever used a treadmill in the ten years she's been alive and the eight years that she's been my dog! It's always a rocky start when a dog isn't used to something, but when we get going she always loves something new! Your dogs can do this as well!

It only seems barbaric, inhumane, and counterproductive if you’ve never actually experienced the magical transformation either in person or on video.

We’ve rehabbed countless insecure/fearful dogs using the *gasp* e-collar torture device, lol, but strangely they (the dogs) all seem to come out not only more stable, comfortable, and confident, but they also bond with us incredibly deeply. Weird that.

For many, this is an impossible reality to envision/contemplate/reconcile, yet myself, and countless other trainers experience it daily.

They don’t want you to know the truth, because the truth undermines their entire political/moral stance. I encourage you to be brave enough to explore possibilities which might be frowned upon, or given a healthy serving of social pressure in an attempt to dissuade your curiosity…and ultimate discovery. Because if they had nothing to protect/hide, they’d be happy to have you try it all and then decide what’s best.

Sadly, this isn’t our current reality.

Leash train your dogs, and teach them recall. I've seen loose dogs charge Police Horses and get kicked to kingdom come... and it's always the dog owner mad when they're at fault.

Service dogs.
Probably one of the most unpopular topics for any pet dog trainer.
I cannot begin to count the amount of service dog training requests I receive.
“Can your online courses train my dog to be a service dog?”
“I need to make my dog a service dog so he can ride on the bus with me” (Yes, someone seriously asked me this)
“Do you certify service dogs?”
No - no - no - and more no.
Service dog training is completely different from pet dog training.
If your dog is trained to walk nicely on a leash and sit and stay, they are a pet dog.
If your dog comes up to you and nuzzles you when you are sad - they are still a pet dog.
If you want your dog to accompany you into stores or fly in-cabin on planes … they’re still only a pet dog and these privileges are not for them.
Service dogs are task-trained.
They are specifically taught to work for people with disabilities.
A dog that solely provides comfort is not a service dog.
I see a lot of people acquiring dogs, labeling them as “my service dog” and *then* going about training them.
This is not how that works.
You cannot just select a dog, put a service dog harness on them and figure the rest out as you go.
We regularly receive requests from dog owners who tell us that their “service dog” pulled them over on leash or has always been highly reactive.
That their service dog relentlessly chases wildlife on walks or has anxiety in social settings.
One time I got a request from a lady who told me that she got a dog from the shelter to be her son’s service dog, but that “service dog” was now biting the son and could I please fix it.
I’m sorry - none of those dogs are not service dogs then. And they likely won’t be service dogs in the future either.
Please be honest about the dog you own.
Unless you worked diligently to train them as a service animal with specific tasks, they are a pet.
A beloved, (hopefully) well-behaved, wonderful pet.
But not a working dog, and you should not demand the privileges that are reserved for true service dogs.
Staying clear with this distinction protects the actual service dogs and their owners :)
