Hope For Horses To improve the quality of life and end suffering for at-risk horses in Western North Carolina We work with animal control groups in several WNC counties.
(37)

Hope for Horses is a non-profit equine rescue located in Leicester, NC. Hope for Horses was established in 1998 to provide permanent placement alternatives for the equine population of Western North Carolina. The need became more apparent as more and more horses were left abandoned, neglected and abused. Hope for Horses was given life largely due to the services of Dr. Ann Stuart and Dr. Ted Wrigh

t of Appalachian Equine Veterinary Service, located in Weaverville, North Carolina. Their never-ending support provides the necessary medical care for horses donated to the program. The additional support of approximately sixty-five dedicated volunteers and numerous local contributors enables this dream to continue. Hope for Horses also offers solutions for equine owners in need of help through our HorseMatch Program. Many of these horses are in excellent condition, but in most cases due to their ages or certain limitations and their owners are just wanting good homes for them. While we believe there is a time and a place for euthanasia, we are steadfast in our belief that every horse deserves a safe and happy retirement whenever possible.

Hope for Horses needs your help!

Meet Mae and Jake💞
These very sweet horses came into our care last week from a neighboring county. They were found tethered to a tree in a back yard and both were starving. Jake has been slowing gaining and Mae is taking a bit longer to gain, both are gaining in their spirits and loving their new home at Hope for Horses.

Can you help us with our feed bill? These two are costing us triple what our other horses cost and we really need the help. ❤️🙏🏽❤️

❤️Pebbles is a 30 year old,15 plus hand, bay, quarter horse mare looking for her forever home. She is a very friendly mare that shares her home with goats. Pebbles is not ridable due to arthritis in her hind end, but would make a wonderful companion. Pebbles would like a run-in shelter so she can hide from the bugs that make her belly itchy…Pebbles loves a good belly rub. Her family is moving away and looking for a soft place for her to land. ❤️

“Know that old gelding of yours? You know, the trusty gelding who taught you to ride. We all have one in our pasture. He was the first horse you trusted with your kids. Everything this horse has done has had a purpose behind it.

Now his joints are starting to show arthritis from all the learning you two did together. He probably has slowed down and need a little extra food. Your family is ready for something with a little more speed and he doesn’t fit the bill. So you convince yourself you are letting him go so he can help teach another child. In your mind, you see him happily trotting down the road with a sweet little girl on his back.

In reality, that little girl will ride and love him for a few years. However, she outgrows him. He’s even slower and she’s ready to run. Her family is not bonded with your horse like you were. They sell him to the inexperienced family down the road.

This family knows nothing about horses. They don’t know how to feed an aged horse. He looses weight. Soon it’s so bad they keep him in the back pasture where no one can see him.
Finally, they take him to a sale.

No one at the sale wants a neglected, aged horse. So he goes through the ring and sells for $400 to a killbuyer. The killpen is where I find him. I know nothing about his history and nothing about his health. All I can see is the wisdom and pain in his eyes. I take him home.

As much as I love what I do, I would love to never see one of these poor old guys again. It breaks my heart to know that this is the story of so many animals out there.

So please, please keep your aged horses. If you can no longer afford them, lease them to a friend or put them down. No one deserves for their life to end this way.”

❤️Ruby is a 29 yr old, 17 hand, paint mare, who is looking for her forever home. Ruby is very gentle and sweet. She enjoys being groomed and loved on. She is patient with people and enjoys being with them. She has been serving as a therapeutic horse. With some exercise, she could be ridden lightly by an intermediate rider. Considering her age, a rider less than 150 lbs would be ideal. Ruby has no special needs and is not on any medication. ❤️

A nice article about the aging horse. Prepare to love them through the aging years💞

To keep your horse healthy and comfortable as the years pass, focus on the five areas of equine health most affected by aging. It’s natural to worry about your horse’s health as he grows older. Whether you’ve owned him for most of his life or he only recently joined your herd, you know that, w...

Sweet Jackson made it into The Chronicle Of The Horse🤗
It’s a great read!

Jennie Ratcliff was 21 and fresh out of nursing school in 1993 when she ran into an acquaintance who was trying to offload a horse called “Big Red.” The person had acquired him from a horse trader and had no firm information about the 16-hand gelding’s past, his breed or even his age, though a...

💙Derby is a 21 year old, 17 hand, bay gelding that is looking for his forever home. He is a sweet and curious horse! He loves being groomed and having a treat! He is very bonded to Ruby, also on Horse Match, so they will need to stay together. Derby has been an amazing equine therapy horse, and is really great at ground work. Derby is ridable by a light beginner or intermediate rider as he had a back injury years ago, and now it is recommended that his rider be 100 lbs or less.
