There is something magical about the bond between horse and rider.

Riding or just being with our horses allows us to experience a sense of freedom, and the deep connection that we develop with our horses is like no other.

This quote captures all of this and more ❤️

How much does your horse drink? 🤷🏽‍♀️💧

A horse in a moderate climate, can drink between 20 litres and 55 litres per day! If it's hot, then you can expect them I drinker even more!

So, make sure you have a sufficient amount of water available for your horse at all times. And remember, your horses water requirement can change daily! 💧🐎

Did you know that horses could have a curly coat?!

The Bashkir Curly is one of the horses that has the curly coat gene. They are found in America and are quite a hardy breed of horse 🐴.

Interestingly though, not all Bashkir Curly horses will have curly hair. Some only have curly manes and tails, whilst others have curly coats, manes AND eyelashes😯!

So, what do you think, would you own a curly horse? 🐎

There is no doubt that horses cost money! But, there are ways in which we can reduce our feed bill!

To learn how follow our top tips below:

- Buy Local - locally made feed is generally cheaper as you won't be paying for transport costs, and these cost savings are passed onto you!

- Utilise Pasture - if you have access to good quality pasture, then allow your horse to graze as often as possible. If this isn't possible, then consider spelling your horse throughout the year.

- Be strategic with hay - hay is one of the most expensive feed items, so ensuring that it isn't spoiled is key. Consider placing hay in slow feeder nets to prevent wastage and spoilage. Also, buy hay in bulk if you can.

- Consider a Balancer Pellet - if you feed a hard feed then a balancer pellet can save you in supplement costs. Balancer pellets are concentrated forms of vitamins, minerals, and protein that a horse requires.

- Balance your horse's diet - often horses are fed too much or are over-supplemented. It is worthwhile having your horse's diet balanced using a feed program or engaging an equine nutritionist to ensure there is no feed wastage.

As the weather warms up, we must consider the well being of the horse. Here are some tips that will help you keep your horse happy and healthy while riding in the summer months.

1. Wake Up Early or Stay Up Late - plan your rides for the cooler parts of the day, to minimise heat exhaustion. Remember, caution is needed for temperatures between 32°C and 35°C, and riding should be avoided when temperatures exceed 35°C. If you must ride during these temperatures, keep the rides light and short, with frequent breaks, and no intense training.

2. Rest and Shade - provide your horse with frequent rest breaks and try to ride in a shaded area. Monitor your horse for heat exhaustion which includes excessive sweating, lethargy, or rapid breathing.

3. Hydration - horses may require double or even triple the amount of water in high temperatures. Always have fresh water available before, during, and after the ride. Consider adding an electrolyte supplement to replace minerals lost through sweat.

4. Cooling Down - after riding, cool your horse down properly. A hose down with cool water will help bring their body temperature down and back to normal. Remember when hosing your horse, don't scrape off the water as this will help cool them down.

The weather is heating up, and for some horses this means that they won't consume enough water.

So, how do we encourage our horses to drink?

1. Make sure the water is clean. This may sound simple but make sure water buckets are clean and free from food or algae. Horses are more inclined to drink fresh water.

2. Feed salt to stimulate their thirst. Salty food makes us drink more, so by offering your horse a salt block, you may help stimulate their thirst too.

3. Feed mash. There are certain feed stuffs such as beet pulp, lupin fibre, soy hulls and copra that need to be soaked prior to feeding. Feeding wet feed will help increase your horses water intake.

4. In summer, horses prefer to drink cool water, so make sure their water troughs are kept cool. In winter however, horses will prefer warmer water!

5. Horses can be encouraged to drink by flavouring their water either with some apple juice or molasses.

6. If all else fails, change the bucket colour. Horses prefer to drink from a blue bucket hue rather than that of red, green or yellow!

It's Melbourne Cup Day. But, instead of focusing on the races, how about let's look at where these athletic and often talented horses end up after the races.

After racing, horses are generally retired to breeding or sold on for a career in other equestrian disciplines such as eventing, show jumping, dressage or show horse.

In Australia, the Racing Industry in each State has set up welfare programmes to ensure their horses are retrained and rehomed. Some individuals take on off-the-track (OTT) racers and dedicate their time to retrain the horses into suitable riding mounts.

It is often a misconception that OTT horses are highly strung or cannot be retrained, but in many cases, this is the complete opposite. OTT horses can be suitable for adult riders looking for a pleasure horse, or even the elite riders looking for their next Olympic mount. So, if you are on the hunt for your next horse, give the OTT a chance, as they make fantastic mounts.

If you have an OTT horse, we would love to hear your story in the comments below!

Have you ever seen a horse twitch the skin on its withers or belly? This is commonly known as the Fly Twitch Response and comes in handy for getting rid of flies or other biting insects on the horse.

The muscle controlling these twitches is called the Panniculus Carnosus Muscle and it runs from the base of the neck, over the back to the quarters. The muscle doesn't run through the horse's neck or lower legs.

This is important to know because it means that the horses cannot use the twitch response to get rid of biting flies and insects, and must instead shake its head, or stomp their feet. Hence, during summer it might be worthwhile to use fly boots, insect sprays, or rugs on horses particularly bothered by insects, to help them keep those nasty biters at bay!
