Introductions and Dreams
All my life, I’ve adored cats. Many interests come and go, but none have gripped my heart like cats do. My favorite big cat is the cheetah, so when I found out about servals and savannah cats, I was immediately hooked. However, I wouldn’t have the time, maturity, or money to have one of my own until many years later.
It wasn’t until I got my very first savannah cat, Imari (gold eyes), in 2017 that I knew I wanted to always be surrounded by them. I set out to find a savannah playmate (Ceir, green eyes) for Imari, and was totally head over heels for these little kitties. Unfortunately, Imari became extremely sick by his first birthday. So sick that I thought I was going to lose him. After over a year of daily medications, countless tests, and very expensive specialists, Imari was taken by his illness shortly after his second birthday. Throughout the process, his breeder had been unhelpful, to say the least. I did not know the right questions to ask before I purchased him, and no info was given to me, so the health status of his parents remains unknown to me. Losing my baby boy was one of the most difficult points in my life, and feeling alone in the process was especially hard. This experience, paired with my fascination for the breed, and overall passion for cats, inspired me to become a breeder myself. I believe breeders should be upfront, honest, and vigilant with matters regarding their kittens. I hope that I can be a model, albeit small, breeder who produces healthy, friendly kittens, while remaining open, dependable, and pleasant to deal with. Accidents happen, and breeding is tricky, but the biggest problem of all is that the breeder never gave any proof that their cats were healthy, and never replied to my requests to see test results. The first step to breeding cats absolutely should involve ensuring your cats are healthy.
My ultimate dream in life is to own a cat cafe rescue that houses cats that are eligible for adoption. We would house the cats for as long as it takes them to get adopted out, with cafe proceeds covering the costs of their shelter. If turn over was good, we’d focus on taking cats from the euthanasia lists at local shelters, and TNR cats and kittens that are friendly enough to be placed into homes. I think having savannah cats visiting the cafe would be an amazing opportunity to draw people in. It seems like such a far off dream, but I’m hoping that one day, it can become a reality! Until then, I am doing my best to be the savannah breeder I needed Imari’s breeder to be and enjoying the company of these beautiful cats and kittens.
