Are you seeking a deeper understanding of urban agriculture and the greening of cities?

This winter, the Certificate Program in Urban Agriculture at RUniversity* is offering two online courses.

https://continuing.ryerson.ca/public/category/courseCategoryCertificateProfile.do?method=load&certificateId=3820596

Join instructors Joe Nasr and Rhonda Teitel-Payne in the foundation course, CVFN410 - Understanding Urban Agriculture. You’ll explore the practice of urban agriculture in its many forms around the world and see how it enhances and contributes to urban food security, health, community building, sustainable livelihoods and environmental management. This course expands understanding of the potential impacts, constraints, and opportunities of urban agriculture. You’ll also learn about relevant stakeholders, historical contexts and local, regional and international trends.

In CVFN413 – Urban Agriculture Policy Making with instructor James Kuhns, you’ll explore participatory policy making concerning the role of urban agriculture in sustainable development and institutionalisation of urban agriculture in city-regional food systems. The course examines the tools and methodologies for analysing stakeholders, farming systems, land uses, and regulatory frameworks. Next steps involve strategic planning leading to design of appropriate policies and actions for implementing urban agriculture projects and their monitoring and evaluation. The course highlights lessons from a wide array of cities around the world.

For more information on how to register for the four-course Urban Agriculture Certificate Program and its courses, contact Reg Noble (Academic Coordinator) at [email protected]. The winter session starts January 17, 2022 and registration is open until January 24, 2022.

Please note, there are also courses available in the Certificate in Food Security – to see which courses are available go to the Certificate in Food Security webpage.

If you have a particular interest in urban food systems and food security, there is the food security course, CFNY408 – Urban Food Security. Over half of the world’s population now lives in cities. So, ensuring safe and affordable food for urban populations is a real challenge even for advanced industrial economies, and even worse for developing countries where resources are limited and poverty rates exceed 50 percent. This course will examine the unique challenges of creating food security in urban areas.

*In response to concerns from Indigenous community members and other faculty and students, RUniversity’s Board of Directors has voted to accept 22 recommendations from the Standing Strong (Mash Koh Wee Kah Pooh Win) Task Force, including renaming the university.
