Beat the Heat! 💦 Keep Your Flock Cool and Hydrated
🌡️ Summer's here, and so is the heat! 🥵 Make sure your feathered friends are staying cool and hydrated.

Fresh water is key: Provide plenty of clean, cool water throughout the day. Consider adding ice cubes or frozen water bottles to their waterers for extra refreshment.
Shady spots: Ensure your chickens have access to shaded areas in their coop and run. Plant trees or shrubs for natural shade.
Ice pack magic: Freeze water in milk jugs or bottles and place them in the coop during the hottest parts of the day. This will help lower the temperature.
Ventilation: Good airflow is essential. Open windows and doors in your coop to allow fresh air to circulate.
Monitor closely: Watch for signs of heat stress, such as lethargy, panting, or loss of appetite. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek advice from a vet.
By following these tips, you can help your chickens stay comfortable and healthy during the hot summer months. ☀️

Preventing Frostbite:

A question that we are often asked is "How can I protect my chickens from frostbite on their combs and wattles?"

Frostbite is a serious concern in freezing temperatures. Here are some tips:
Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to combs and wattles before they go outside.
Limit outdoor time during extreme cold snaps.
Provide access to a warm, draft-free shelter.

One of our key USPs is that we have hybrid hen available 365 days of the year and this year is no exception! Yesterday we took delivery of a fresh batch of Hybrids and will also have a good selection of very cute Silkies.

So far, so good! No sign of a poultry lockdown yet, which will be a relief to many, if not all, of the backyard chicken keepers out there.
However, maintaining vigilance and cleaning /disinfecting is highly important. Here are some tips:

• Clean and disinfect your chicken coop and run regularly.
• Use a good quality disinfectant designed for poultry use.
• Keep your coop and run well-ventilated.
• Control pests, such as rats and mice. These pests can carry diseases that can infect your chickens.

By following these tips, you can help to keep your chickens healthy and disease-free.
