Know the difference.

It has become apparent that there is often confusion as to what the difference is between an APBT, the English Bull Terrier ( the correct name for a Bull Terrier), a Staffordshire Bull Terrier ( correct name for the staffie), the American Staffordshire ( amstaff) and the American Bully.

We have reached out to the correct breed clubs, and we will feature each one on the page along with a link to their parent breed clubs. Go learn, go ask the right people questions and learn to identify each one

PET STERILISATION NOW COMPULSORY IN CAPE METRO

Christmas has arrived early for the thousands of animals in the Cape Metro with the gift of mandatory sterilisation for all cats and dogs over 6 months of age being gazetted on Thurs Dec 9th.

This eagerly anticipated and hotly debated new and improved Animal Keeping By Law (2021) speaks to several omissions in all earlier versions the most glaring of which was mandatory pet sterilisation that has always been considered an elective procedure.

How will the by-law be enforced?
The by-law affords enforcement officers and our Inspectors a lot more “bite than bark”.

We envisage it being policed on a pro-active basis and enforced on a re-active basis with guilty parties facing possible imprisonment and/or hefty fines.

In our experience that spans over 90 years there are few if any animal welfare interventions that have a greater beneficial impact than mass pet sterilisation programmes as we continue the battle against the scourge of animal overpopulation and cruelty – so this is very welcome news and should be seen as one of the greatest gifts the City of Cape Town has ever given its significant pet population.

It represents a triumph for all animal lovers and animal welfare professionals and we are confident that this world-class legislation will be warmly welcomed by all enlightened pet owners.

PROTECTION DOG IN TRAINING

This demonstrates that while the dog is at the heel position it will tolerate the handler being touched and allow itself to be petted, but once called the the guard position (between handlers legs) it will not allow any attempt to make contact. It will also stay in the guarding position when handler moves forward or back even though it is off leash. In this clip we are working on getting the dog to pull back when on the bite.
