A little Charlie updateā€¦

Iā€™ve noticed a little cyst on his wing but I can only see it when he stretches it right out. It doesnā€™t seem to be causing him any discomfort so Iā€™m hoping itā€™s just a little fatty lump. Heā€™s still very content, can still fly etc.

I want to get him to a Vet soon but thereā€™s just not many bird ones where I am. If you happen to be a Vet or have seen this before, Iā€™d love your thoughts!

The cutest little doggy burrito after lots of rain šŸŒ§ļø

We had an interesting end to 2023 here on the Gold Coast. We were hit with what theyā€™ve claimed was a little tornado and that NEVER happens here. It was a bad storm with thunder, lightning and rainā€¦ but the wind was like nothing Iā€™ve ever seen before. We lost power for 2 days but other people were without for 5/6 days or longer. There were trees ripped from their roots and blocking roads, some homes were very badly damaged. It was quite scary and definitely a first for me - not something Iā€™d like to see again any time soon.

How has the start to 2024 been for you?

I absolutely adore this time of year. I love taking Lucy (not Charlie unfortunately) for a drive around to see some houses that people have put a lot of effort into decorating. Itā€™s the highlight of the month for me!

If you celebrate Christmas, do you decorate your house or have any photos of ones youā€™ve seen? I love seeing them all!

In Australia, we get a hot, humid day full of ice cold drinksā€¦ Iā€™d love to experience the cool snow & hot cocoa in a White Christmas one day. In the meantime, Iā€™ll have to settle for some of your photos!

Iā€™ve been home sick all week due to some kind of nasty virus but Lucy has been right by my side keeping me company. I finally felt somewhat human again today but it was exceptionally hot (34 degrees or 93 fahrenheit) so I couldnā€™t do anything with her until it got cooler.

We were blessed with this gorgeous sunset this evening and after a week of being stuck indoors, it was just what my soul needed! I think Lucy loved it too!

Have you got some pretty sunset photos? Iā€™d love to see!

Hi to you all. How is everyone going? Iā€™m sorry for the lack of posts - life just gets so busy but I know youā€™ve all been hoping for an update so here it is!

Lucy and Charlie are just their usual little selves. Lucy is doing amazingly after her surgery - you wouldnā€™t even know she was ever in pain. Sheā€™s back to being my cute and happy little fluffball, thankfully! And Charlie is just his cheeky self šŸ©·

Whatā€™s new with you?

6 weeks post-surgery and Lucy has now got the all-clear. Of course we will always need to take extra special care of her as thereā€™s a possibility that she could rupture another disc as time goes onā€¦ but as of right now, sheā€™s back to her usual self and Iā€™m so relieved!

Way to go my girl, proud of you! šŸ„³šŸ’›

Itā€™s been 4 weeks since Lucyā€™s surgery after the ruptured C5/C6 disc in her spine.

You wouldnā€™t even know this dog could barely walk before her spinal surgery a few weeks ago. Sheā€™s now THRIVING. We got the all-clear from the Vet to go for little walks so we did that today and just look at her faceā€¦ sheā€™s genuinely smiling! So nice to give Lucy some freedom again šŸ‘šŸ¼

HAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY CHARLIE!

I canā€™t believe it was ten years ago that he came into my life! I begged my parents for years to let me have a petā€¦ they finally caved and let me buy a bird! I saw Charlie and knew that he was going to be mine.

I know that every day is brighter when I wake up to his ā€œwhat ya do do do doingā€ and I could never have predicted the impact he would have on my life. I am so grateful heā€™s still here, still happy and still living his best life!

Lucy had her post-surgery check up today (itā€™ll be 3 weeks tomorrow since the surgery) and the surgeon is thrilled with Lucyā€™s progress. Her scar is healing well (you can slightly see it in this photo, under her head). He checked her range of movement and sheā€™s moving/walking well.

Heā€™s said 3 more weeks of taking it easy before she can go back to her usual activities including playing with toys etc but she is allowed to go for little, daily 10 minute walks now! Oh, and she can finally have a bath! She makes a cute little ragamuffin thoughā€¦

Itā€™s been just over one week since Lucy had surgery and Charlie has been squawking louder than usual! I think he just wanted to be a bit closer to Lucy. Weā€™ve had to keep her fairly contained in a playpen this week but tonight we just wanted her to have some normality back and Charlie was seemingly happy with that plan too.

Oh, my heart šŸ’—

Oh sis, what you do do do doing down there? Poor Charlieā€¦ I think heā€™s a bit confused by this new layout!

LUCY IS HOME ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

The Vet is so very happy with how sheā€™s recovered. Sheā€™s walking, eating & wagging her tail. Weā€™re fortunate in that the surgeon was able to perform this operation through the front of the neck, as opposed to cutting open her back (that often leads to a far bigger recovery). The Vet also said he doesnā€™t think sheā€™s going to require much physio/rehab as sheā€™s healed so well. Iā€™m so relieved and so proud of her!

Sheā€™s come home and had a massive nap in her playpen (she has to be crated for 6-8 weeks now) so I hope she tolerates it this well as time goes on. Just need some cream to help the redness on her skin. And while weā€™ll never cure the or , Iā€™m hoping we can manage it and give her the best quality of life as she gets older.

Also, if you donā€™t have pet insurance, let this be a motivatorā€¦ this surgery was quoted at $9-$12,000. Without pet insurance, Lucy would not have had this surgery and most likely wouldnā€™t be with me today. Itā€™s worth its wait in gold for when things like this happen!

I appreciate all the love ā¤ļø

ITā€™S LUCYā€™S BIRTHDAY šŸ„³ she turns 9 today!

I wasnā€™t able to visit Lucy in the Vet Hospital today as sheā€™s in recovery (I did ask for a photo but I donā€™t think Iā€™m going to get oneā€¦) so I had to make a cute little collage instead!

Lucy is the most beautiful, brave & loving dogā€¦ I wish I had her in my arms tonight to give her a hug but if all goes well, sheā€™ll be coming home tomorrow!

This is not the update I intended to give today but regardless, here it is. To start, Lucy is going to be okay. I know that photo looks scary but sheā€™s had surgery this morning and is now in recovery ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Last night, Lucy deteriorated and the screaming intensified. She was on a LOT of pain medication and we knew in our hearts if she was still feeling pain with all of that in her system, something was very wrong. As soon as we got to the Specialist Vet, she told us as soon as she saw Lucy, she knew it was a spinal case. The poor Vet couldnā€™t move Lucy without her screaming in pain. They told us she wouldnā€™t be able to come home, that they would be admitting her. We had to leave her overnight but they gave her some more Fentanyl in an IV. I then woke up to this lovely text from the Vet (so comforting)!

She had a CT this morning which as you can see (the big circle) confirmed the disc had ruptured in the C5/C6 space of her neck. This was putting pressure on her spinal cord which is undoubtedly why she has been experiencing horrendous pain. He told me very clearly that this would never heal on its own without surgery so first thing this morning, surgery began.

I have since had a call to let me know the surgery went well. I am VERY relieved. Heā€™s happy with how it went and will be speaking with us tomorrow to let us know how she goes overnight.

Please send us all the positive thoughts and prayers āœØ I really appreciate everyone who took the time to comment and send me messages. Iā€™m heartbroken for Lucy but I know sheā€™s a tough girl and I hope I can help her with her rehab moving forward.

Miss Lucy seemed to be doing better but has sadly taken a bit of a turnā€¦ I was at work today but my Mum (Lucyā€™s grandma) ended up taking her to the Vet as she was crying out in pain for most of the morningā€¦ weā€™ve got a referral for a doggy specialist to see on Tuesday. If she doesnā€™t improve, itā€™s likely sheā€™ll need a CT and failing that, the next step could be surgery which absolutely terrifies me.

Obviously her body is becoming used to the pain relief and itā€™s not working as well. As of now, sheā€™s getting four capsules of Gabapentin per day. The Vet gave her another injection of Methadone today and sheā€™s also now got a patch of Fentanyl on her skin. Itā€™s just so much.

Iā€™m heartbroken that sheā€™s in so much pain and seeming to get worse. I hope the specialists can get to the bottom of this and give us a plan. I canā€™t see my little Lucy struggling like this, itā€™s awful.

So after nearly a week of mystery yelps and shivers that broke my heart and many trips to the Vet, Lucy had an X-ray today which has confirmed sheā€™s got IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease) and something called spondylosis (a disease caused by the abnormal growth of bone in the spine and leads to progressive weakness and pain).

I just hope my brave little senior citizen (sheā€™s turning 9 this Sunday) can stay well with some strong painkillers and rest. Itā€™s been a ruff week!

I thank you for all the love and support šŸ’— you know Charlie will give her lots of moral support too!

MONDAY UPDATE:
Thank you everyone for all your lovely well wishes and advice. I am very grateful for such a wonderful group online to turn to when things arenā€™t going so well. She saw the Vet on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. On Saturday, they increased her pain medication as she was still clearly in a lot of pain and gave us some steroids to help with lowering inflammation as the pain injection upset her tummy (she has Inflammatory Bowel Disease so it doesnā€™t take much). She has been quite ā€œnormalā€ over the weekend, no further screaming like this, however I know sheā€™s on a lot of medication and we still havenā€™t got to the root cause of the issue. Sheā€™s going back to the Vet today and we are going to push for a blood test and potential X-ray. If they donā€™t think an X-ray will show anything (suspecting more a nerve issue than a bone issue), we will be asking for a referral for a CT scan at a veterinary specialist place near where we live. I will keep everyone updated as best as I can. Again, thank you šŸ’—

SATURDAY UPDATE:
Iā€™ve just come home from the Vet. All they did today was up her dose of Gabapentin (so now 4 times a day instead of 2) and given me some steroids to help with the inflammation. We have to wait until Monday for further diagnostic testing šŸ˜¢

***do not play video with sound on loud as it may upset your dogs.

Does anyone have any advice? Do you have a dog with potential nerve pain? Very suddenly, Lucy has developed some pain. I thought she mightā€™ve pulled a muscle or something as she began hesitating jumping on the couch/bed like she normally does very easily. I then took her out for her nightly p*e and all of a sudden, she started screaming like this (broke my heart, it was so scary), her legs kind of went in on themselves (I think she was in shock) and she couldnā€™t move. She started panting and shaking as obviously in a lot of pain. I physically had to scoop her up and get her inside as she couldnā€™t move and she screamed the whole time. It took a lot to calm her down but eventually she did.

I took her to the Vet the next day and she was wagging her tail at staff before we tried to weigh her. We got her on the scale but that slight pressure on her to lift her up caused her to begin screaming again. I broke into tears myself as hearing this sound is awful. They got us into a room, the Vet checked her range of motion in her limbs and she didnā€™t make a p*ep once but as soon as he tried to pick her up, and he barely touched her (itā€™s this video), she started screaming again.

They gave her a strong pain injection which helped but as Lucy has inflammatory bowel disease, it doesnā€™t take much to flare it up and this medication did that (p**p with blood the night of injection). So currently sheā€™s having a pain relief capsule that isnā€™t as strong and even though she seemed to be getting better, tonight sheā€™s kind of deteriorated again. She wedged herself into a corner panting and shaking for about 15 minutes before I could calm her down.

Iā€™m so sad for her. Just seeing her like this is heartbreaking. The Vets donā€™t have a diagnosis yetā€¦ theyā€™re wanting us to give it a week and if sheā€™s not better, possibly refer us to get a doggy CT.

Does anyone have any advice or been through similar?
