“Hi Diana. Sorry I missed your birthday 🎂”

I do not care if your sweet sentiment and picture of this tiny “chocolate tri” Beagle girl are belated. I love seeing MARGEE/Sophie any day of the week.

You cannot tell from pictures that this little girl is as tiny as she really is. Her foster mom, Amy Johnson, found her walking down the highway between Holly Springs and Senatobia at night. Amy always stops, saw no homes in sight, took pictures and sent to me. I had no idea she was quite as small as she is until the day I met her after vetting to take her to her adopting family in Arlington, TN. They were as surprised as I was. Well, you know what they say: Big things often come in tiny packages. She definitely has a very big personality, but that makes her soooo much fun and just silly at times.

As I said earlier, I could not have had a better birthday than to be showered with so many updates on our alumnae—adopted Grace Rescue babies. ZOEY/Bella and EVIE/Brie, now living in Orlando, Florida with Jeff and Becky, didn’t realize in their former lives that life could be soooo good.

“The Girls Bella & Brie on their morning walk😃. Bella is acting more and more like a beagle each day! She now loves to follow her sister and needs to smell everything! lol 😂. Walks are long but they love them and look forward to them every day! BruceLee is still big brother and dotes over them👍. Girls are doing fantastic and are healthy and happy 😃. Hope all is well!”

My birthday on the 5th was so much fun receiving updates on our babies from several adopters. This is our DAKOTA, now Maggie, with her “babies” on Wanda and David’s bed. I asked Wanda where she and David sleep, and she said, “On the edge.” 😂

What an awesome “birthday gift” to receive an update and picture of our HARLEY, now Harris, living his best life in Birmingham. We pulled Harley from the Olive Branch Animal Shelter with a number of health issues from pure neglect, needing several surgeries. Tim and Melissa (board member of the Alabama ASPCA) first approached us by asking for the Beagle who needed them the most. The rest is history. Thank you, Tim, for this update and thank you and Melissa for making our baby’s life a dream life. Give our best to his sister Nala.

“Just wanted to write and give you an update on Harris. He is doing great and loving life! He’s settled right into our family and loves playing with his sister, Nala. His absolute favorite thing to do is go on his daily walks around the lakes in our neighborhood. He’s made friends with several furry pals that we routinely see on our outings, and of course, there are lots of smells to investigate around the lakes. He is still battling problems with his ears, but thankfully we’re able to manage it with treatment.”

Today has been a crappy day! I hate that word and try never to use it, but sometimes it’s the only word that fits the situation. If you have a better one, please share it with me.

For now, just let me introduce you to HOPE, a beautiful Chow mix, one of my early rescues when I first was called to rescue soooo MANY years ago, when my rescue was an all breed rescue. She eventually became one of my personal dogs, but I eventually had to separate JJ and Hope. This all will be a story for another day, because I just don’t have it in me right now.

She LOVED my KALYN, the lab/golden mix that I had to let go last year. Hope ADORED him, as all of my dogs did; so, I am sure he was waiting at the Rainbow Bridge this afternoon for her, just as I asked him to do. It is obvious she was tired and struggling; at least she is no longer in pain but ready, I am sure, to frolic through those green meadows with Kalyn. She always wanted to go wherever he went.

If anyone deserves to live forever, it is our sweet puppers.

If you missed “My View” with Lara Trump on Fox cable just now, you missed seeing Freddie at work tonight at the DFW Airport. He was also presented the “Courageous Canine Award” not only for his work in sniffing out tons of contraband in his career at the airport but also for his courage when the Egyptian man kicked him for finding contraband in the man’s luggage. He was out of work for two weeks of rehab, but he is back on the job now doing what he does best. I also learned that Freddie, like many of his coworkers in “The Airport Beagle Brigade,” is a rescue Beagle who was then trained to become a working dog for our government. I also found out that Beagles are the second strongest scent hounds, second only to the Bloodhound.

Congratulations Freddie and we are soooo happy to see you back at work doing what you love and do best. We in the Grace Rescue family and followers LOVE you!

Older dogs will have heatstroke even more quickly than younger dogs. Take this advice VERY seriously! I had to hose one of my Beagles last week just going out to potty. Heat index that day was 110.

LET'S TALK HEATSTROKE. We have seen 2 dogs in the last 24 hours that were not doing anything outside of their normal daily activity. Heat Index that we have been experiencing here in the south means that it is too hot even for normal activity right now. When you see gums that are BEET red or darker and they are panting... THEY ARE OVERHEATING! It can happen in 10 minutes. If you find your dog in this situation get a water hose (Make sure the water is not hot) and soak them immediately and load them up! Minutes matter. Thankfully these two patients are going to be ok.

How to beat the heat:
1) Keep them indoors when possible and go for short leash walks to take care of business.

2) FANS, Shade and access to water if they MUST be outside. But know they can still overheat even if this is provided.

3) If they are outside.. Keep a check on them regularly. If they are running/barking/etc or say go chase after a squirrel... THIS CAN LEAD TO HEAT STROKE.

4) If you have a bulldog or short nosed breed... Keep them indoors. PERIOD.

Sorry to be so blunt. But this is a horrible way to go and if we can prevent ONE death I want to do so!

Each of our little rescue Beagles has his/her own story that just captures our hearts, stories that are sad but quickly turn into jubilation when God sends us that perfect family to turn sadness into a fairytale new beginning.

HARPER first captured our hearts when our vet messaged us his picture and told us he had just been surrendered and could we take him. Actually, his family brought him to the clinic to be euthanized. The only family he had ever known where he had lived as an inside dog was suddenly moving out of state and “could not” take him with them.

Harper was already an older dog at age 7 but not even close to being a senior, since Beagle lifespan is 16 to 18 years with good wellness care. We took care of his vetting needs, and in His time, God sent Harper the “bestest” application for adoption. Phoebe and her mom Phyllis from Fairhope, Alabama area were his perfect FOREVER family, wanting to adopt an older but still active Beagle boy.

To say Harper, adoption class of 2022, is living his very best life is an understatement. Phyllis’ recent message, along with these precious pictures:

“I just wanted you to know how much we love Harper! He is the sweetest boy…and when we go on a trip we always take him with us. He will never be left or abandoned again. I feel so bad about wondering how he was treated, but that just makes us treasure him more. He loves riding in the car and likes to look out the window. We never had a dog that was so compliant and docile. Thank you again for approving us to get him.”

Oh man! Happy tears rolling down my cheeks! Thank you, Phyllis, for following our rescue and staying in touch. We are so very grateful for all 3 of you!
