Training Tip: Before heading out on a walk with your dogs always have a pocket full of " High value treats" My dogs prefer the Turkey Berry Chews from LA. While on our walk we encountered two young ladies on horse back walking towards us. My dogs have not seen horses on the trail before so I anticipated their behavior to be far too excited. As they approached, I sat my dogs facing me and away from the horses. I used my treats, broken into small pieces to " Rapid Fire Treat " them. Meaning I was feeding one treat after another as fast as I could. All the while I was using the words that we have established. " Right Here " which means pay attention to ME. and " Friend" which means I am ok with whomever is approaching. Although Dessa kept them in the corner of her eye and let out a few grumbles as I would expect no less; then end result was some very grateful girls who didn't get thrown from their horses due to over reactive dogs tugging, lunging and barking. The other scenario was with someone who Did have a tugging, lunging dog which is something my dogs will often react to. Again, anticipate, redirect, assure, reward, and most importantly Be the Alpha. Take charge of the situation, don't leave that up to your dog!
