Parker Stock Farm We provide registered Suffolk breeding stock that is in tune with industry demands. Please message us if you have any questions!

We place emphasis on performance and maternal traits, carcass ultrasounding and genetic testing for scrapie resistance. Glen and Kathy Parker have been raising sheep since 1989 and registered suffolk seedstock since 1999. The nucleus of the Parker ewe flock was purchased from Chester Fowler; a legend in the sheep industry . Slowly they began expanding the purebred flock until they eventually dispe

rsed the commercial sheep to focus on raising purebred seedstock. Progeny of the Parker Program have found success working in a number of large commercial flocks, in the showring and consistently ranking very high in the national average on the GenOvis program; the only national performance program available to the sheep industry.

Beautiful days like today are only made better when you receive the following message from a buyer who has trusted our program for the last 2 years !

“We put a huge amount of time into genetic records on our farm. On the terminal side, our current focus is:
1) slightly increasing lamb birth weight (but not too much!)
2) ongoing improvement of lamb survivability
and 3) increasing the 50-100 day rate of gain.

Without Genovis records to provide EPDs on these traits, we have absolutely no way to select rams that will positively influence our flock. The Suffolk rams we purchased last year did the work we asked of them.
Thanks for providing the numbers we need, Glen and Kathy! We will be back!”
Stacey White and Tara Giesbrecht, Bluffton, AB

Thank you Stacey and Tara for having confidence in our program!

Fun fact Tuesday!

Fun fact Tuesday!

Ruminants are amazing creatures, but what does being a ruminant mean? Ruminants are ungulates (2-toed) animals that chew a regurgitated cud. In order to chew their cud, they must have a specific type of stomach -- a rumen. Our domesticated ruminants have 1 stomach with 4 awesome compartments.
1. Rumen - The 1st chamber is the biggest and can be bigger than 30 gallons in a mature cow! The rumen has a "shaggy" carpet feel/look with papillae that flow back and forth (think seaw**d moving in the ocean). The rumen is filled with "bugs" and has its own ecosystem of bacteria and yeast to break down forages.
2. Reticulum -- This 2nd chamber is a smaller outcropping of the rumen and has "cups" like a honeycomb pattern to catch the food for digestion.
3. Omasum - The 3rd part is a tight basketball shaped compartment in adult cattle with many "pages" of a book. The food weaves back and forth, absorbing water and drying out the ingesta.
4. Abomasum - The 4th compartment is like our human stomach. The ingesta is rehydrated with acid for the final digestion before the intestines.
Check out what they look like!
