International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care IAAHPC was founded to promote knowledge and develop guidelines for comfort-oriented care to companion animals in their end-of-life journey.

Visit www.IAAHPC.org to learn more. Palliative and Hospice Care

Demand for palliative and hospice services for animals is rapidly increasing because of our deep emotional attachment to them. At the
same time, advancements in veterinary medicine have greatly improved the ability to manage pain and the side effects of disease, making
it possible to offer greater comfort at the end of life. Palliati

ve care provides patients comfort by treating the symptoms of a disease. The Palliative Team:
• Provides relief from pain and other symptoms.
• Coordinates care with other providers.
• Guides the animal’s human caregivers in formulating and implementing a care plan.
• Assists caregivers in making difficult decisions.
• Provides caregivers emotional and spiritual support. Animal hospice is a specific type of palliative care for animals for whom a cure is no longer the goal. Hospice care can be provided at home, at a hospice facility, or in a veterinary hospital. Hospice care is about giving
the animal dignity and comfort, and empowering the family to provide the best possible quality of life during the time they have. Hospice care also provides emotional support to help caregivers cope before, during and after the loss.

💙 Memorial Monday: "Mr. Cracker Jack came to our home about 10 years ago when he was about 5 years old. He traveled with us everywhere and was our faithful yard patroller, ridding the back yard of neighboring cats. He was a very loving dog, sometimes very independent, and at times, very opinionated. He often told my husband when it was time to go to bed! He would spend hours on the arm of my chair while I did my beadwork. Sadly, old age caught up with him and he passed just before Christmas. We are greatly saddened by the loss of our friend and companion."

We invite you to mourn with Mr. Cracker Jack's family by lighting a candle or leaving a message in honor of Mr. Cracker Jack here: https://buff.ly/3GLYDQQ

Meet Dr. Kelly Hill

Here’s Dr. Hill’s story:
Dr. Kelly Hill has known she wanted to be a veterinarian since childhood. After graduating from Davidson College in North Carolina, she attended the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine and went on to complete a small animal internship at the University of Missouri, followed by a surgical internship at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists in Florida.

Dr. Hill’s career began as an emergency veterinarian in Florida and Georgia, eventually leading her to Maine, where she managed the Animal Emergency Clinic in Lewiston. She later moved south with her husband, a Maine native, and worked as an emergency veterinarian in Portsmouth and at Maine Veterinary Medical Center in Scarborough. After 16 years in emergency medicine, she transitioned to general practice to prioritize family time and pursue her dream of owning her own practice.

A personal cancer diagnosis in 2016 shifted Dr. Hill’s perspective, sparking her interest in integrative medicine and the impact of lifestyle on health. This inspired her to establish Haven Veterinary Hospice and Senior Care, where she provides progressive, integrative care for animals in their homes.

As one of a select few veterinarians certified in hospice and palliative care (CHPV) through the International Association of Animal Hospice and Palliative Care (IAAHPC), Dr. Hill integrates diverse care approaches, including pain management, cold laser therapy, physical therapy, herbal medicine, and environmental enrichment. She’s often praised for her compassionate approach and warm energy, helping pet owners as they navigate a new phase in their pets’ lives.

Dr. Hill lives in Biddeford, ME, with her husband Matt, three daughters, six cats, two dogs, and multiple chickens. She serves Biddeford and the surrounding areas.

Meet Dr. Kellie Barrett

Here’s Dr. Barrett’s story:
Dr. Kellie Barrett founded Kindred Spirits with the belief that pets deserve gentle and respectful care throughout their final journey in life. Originally from Nebraska, Dr. Barrett earned her veterinary degree from Iowa State University and has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including animal shelters, private practice, and a nonprofit organization serving under-resourced communities. For over 13 years, she has called Tucson home, where she enjoys life with her husband, two children, their rescue dog Roo, and their blind cat, Eighty-Eight.

Specializing in end-of-life care, Dr. Barrett is trained by the Companion Animal Euthanasia Training Academy (CAETA) as a Certified Peaceful Euthanasia Veterinarian, with expertise in gentle and advanced euthanasia techniques. Her additional certifications include Low Stress Handling, the Human-Animal Bond, and Pet Loss & Grief Support. She is also a certified hospice and palliative care veterinarian through the IAAHPC (International Association of Animal Hospice and Palliative Care).

With a dedication to grief support, Dr. Barrett earned the Death and Grief Studies Certificate from the Center for Loss and Life Transition under Dr. Alan Wolfelt, completing over 150 hours in bereavement care and companioning. She continues her education in grief support, drawing on Dr. Wolfelt’s teachings to enhance her compassionate care for both pets and their families.

💜 Memorial Monday: "Jenna was a wonderful lady I adopted from the shelter. She was surrendered because she was balding and nippy. With vet care, she started growing her hair back. She was nippy because she was deaf. She had a very happy, loving life for the several years I had her. She was very sweet and cuddly. She will be missed."

Meet the IAAHPC Team: Dr. Anupam

Here’s Dr. Anupam’s story:
Born and raised in the Middle East and India, Dr. Anupam Sharma has a journey that reflects resilience and passion for animals. Moving from victim to survivor, and now a warrior, her experiences have given her a profound understanding of the human condition.

Dr. Sharma graduated from the University of Sydney in 2006 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Science. Since then, she has worked as a qualified veterinarian in general practice and emergency hospitals across Sydney, Melbourne, and London. With her worldwide experience as a relief veterinarian, Dr. Sharma pursued additional studies in small animal medicine, becoming a member of the Australia and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists, which is a recognition of her specialized knowledge.

In 2016, Dr. Sharma earned a Diploma in Management, and in 2023, she achieved certification from the International Association of Animal Hospice and Palliative Care (IAAHPC), the highest academic qualification in Veterinary Palliative Care. As a certified Mental Health First Aid Provider, she supports both clients and colleagues with the emotional and psychological help they need during times of distress.

Dr. Sharma is a strong advocate for physical therapy to alleviate pain, calm the nervous system, and enhance the human-animal bond. As a certified Canine Myo-Manipulative Functional Therapist, she brings a comprehensive, holistic approach to her practice.

💜 Tribute Thursday: "CJ was 14, she was the runt of the litter and came from my parent's ranch from working cattle and sheep dogs. Her favorite thing was to ride in the dodge truck, going for walks/runs as I was on horseback. Playing with basketballs she rolled them, and her pastime was to flatten them. "
