New World screwworm is back on Texans’ radar after animal health officials confirmed a case in South Texas in early June 2026.

While the largest risk for this parasite is generally in cattle and other livestock, New World Screwworm can also affect dogs, cats, people, and other warm-blooded animals.

For pet families it’s important to:

We listened and learned from pet families, met some wonderful dogs, and heard a common challenge many are facing: the rising cost of veterinary care.

Houston Pride Festival was full of love, connection, and community, and Emancipet was honored to attend and celebrate alongside so many Houstonians! 🏳️‍🌈

At the Emancipet booth, we had wonderful conversations with pet owners, shared information about affordable veterinary care, and connected with both familiar and new faces. Pride is such an important space for visibility, joy, and belonging, and we were grateful for the opportunity to show up for the LGBTQ+ community while helping families care for the pets they love. 🐶🐱🫶

It's summertime, Central Texas! ☀️

To prepare for hotter days, our mobile clinics will be:
🩵 Starting Healthy Pet Services at 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
🩵 On extreme heat days, we may close services before 2:00 p.m.

Our pets are more vulnerable during these summer months, so we recommend keeping pets inside an air-conditioned vehicle until it’s time for their visit. Bring water, chairs, and an umbrella if possible to keep sun off pets while waiting for services.

Meet Chuck the cat. 🐈‍⬛ 🐾

Chuck found himself in a tangled situation when his pet parent, Christiana, discovered that sewing thread was wrapped around his tongue and down his esophagus. In order to remove the thread, Chuck would require surgery that was beyond Christiana's budget. That's when she found Emancipet’s Austin Dental and Surgical Center, where Chuck was able to receive the life-saving surgery he needed and Christiana was able to afford.
