Indian Hills Animal Clinic is one of the ever shrinking numbers of vet clinics in Wichita that is still locally owned. (Thank you, Dr Neisius for not giving in to the corporate buyers!)

With that, we know how difficult it is to run a privately owned small business in the face of corporate consolidation, and we want to support other locally owned small businesses!

So- help us do just that! What are your favorite locally owned businesses that we can help promote and check out tomorrow on Small Business Saturday??

There is A LOT to be thankful for... you all included. We hope everyone gets a chance to sit and reflect on the blessings, whether large or small, fur-covered or human, we have in our lives!

Two weeks ago, Dr. Robinson, Dr. Hill, and Dr. Neisius came together to save the life of Sedgwick County Sheriff's PSD Gator!

PSD Gator's handler, Deputy Dailey, noticed Gator was a bit off- presenting with some mild GI signs (vomiting and loose stools). Dr. Robinson did a thorough exam and recommended labwork. His blood tests showed anemia and a significant elevation in his monocytes- a white blood cell that normally rears it's head during tissue inflammation. Following these results, Dr. Robinson performed radiographs and an abdominal ultrasound. Putting all the findings together, Dr. Robinson diagnosed Gator with a splenic torsion.

Splenic torsion is a life threatening condition in which the spleen becomes twisted around its blood vessels. Acute cases of splenic torsion are incredibly painful. Chronic cases, where the spleen has slowly twisted on itself, are less painful and sometimes not found until it's too late. Fortunately for Gator, Deputy Dailey saw the very slight change in Gator's health that lead to his life-saving surgery.

Within 2 hours of getting the diagnosis, Gator was in surgery. Dr. Hill and Dr. Neisius tag-teamed the procedure- performing a splenectomy (surgical removal of the spleen) and a preventative gastropexy. Gator's spleen had twisted around itself SIX times and once removed, weighed in at close to 5lbs- showing just how much blood had been accumulating in- unable to get out.

Gator recovered perfectly in hospital and was discharged the following day. He continued his recovery at home and came in for his final recheck last week!

Fantastic job by all involved!

We can’t let the week come to an end without giving a shoutout to the best Veterinary Practice Manager around!!

Randi has been our practice manager (and friend, conscience, caregiver, comedian, shoulder, and encourager) for the last two years! She has made such an impact on our culture and supported us both during and outside of our regular office hours! She is a voice of compassion and is driven to always improve herself, our teams, and our practice!

In fact, she spent the last week surrounded by some of the best veterinary practice managers we know- focusing on the future success and growth of all our teams!

To Randi- thank you for everything! Happy Practice Managers Week!! 🥳

This morning, Dr Hill and Dr Neisius joined an amazing group of staff and volunteers from the Kansas Humane Society to vaccinate pets from our community! In the course of 3.5 hours, 200 pets were vaccinated/protected, examined, loved on, and microchipped if they weren’t already!

Don't worry Wichita! No puppies were harmed during Cruella de Vil's visit today with Bazel.
And yes, Bazel does identify as a purebred Dalmatian (for today, anyways)!

We wish you all a fun and safe night celebrating!
Happy Howl-a-ween!

13th Clinic Update: Still no water. Sadly, we will have to keep the building closed tomorrow- once again moving all our staff & appointments to the Maize road clinic!

Having done this Friday, I think we were all pleasantly surprised with how things went and really enjoyed working side by side with teammates normally at the opposite clinic!
