When a dog's hackles are up (the hair along the spine, typically from the neck to the tail, stands straight up), this is a significant form of body language.

The scientific term for this involuntary reaction is piloerection, and it is often compared to "goosebumps" in humans. It is an involuntary reflex triggered by the dog's nervous system.

Here is what it means:

1. It Signifies Heightened Arousal
The key meaning of raised hackles is that the dog is in a state of high emotional arousal or stimulation. This arousal is caused by a surge of adrenaline, which is part of the body's "fight or flight" response.

2. It Does NOT Always Mean Aggression
While raised hackles are strongly associated with fear or hostility, they do not automatically mean your dog is being aggressive. They simply signal that your dog is feeling a strong emotion.
