As hard as it is, when that time comes, when there’s that last precious moment, know that we are able to provide a euthanasia and burial service right at your home or designated property.

We are also partnered with Pets in Peace so can also organise cremation services and bring your pet home with us safely for your peace of mind.

Home euthanasia is a non-stressful and comforting way to spend your last moments with those special loved ones.

Hi Everyone!
Just going go do a quick post on here as I have encountered a few things I’d like to touch up on. Firstly, I do try my hardest to help get out to you and your animal. I understand it can be stressful and very frustrating when you can’t get a vet so know that I do try make it work when I can. The shortage of large animal vets is huge. Unfortunately I have even had to refer some things on as even the load and location of some animals just isn’t feasible for me. I am a one man band and do also have a 10 month old to cater to.

I try and stick to northern GC and surrounds however do occasionally travel outside the region to see some clients.

Our referral large animal hospital is WestVETS Animal Hospital / WestVETS Equine Hospital and they specialise in equine and farm animal species. Although they are unable to travel to you please keep in mind you can always travel to them! I know they are a bit out of the way but they have the most knowledgeable, kind hearted staff out there who provide gold standard care for your animals.

There are also numerous other vets and 24 hour hospitals around who can cater but their availabilities are limited.

For equine patients on the east coast, you can try Manly Road 24hr Veterinary Hospital or Redlands Veterinary Clinic.

For small animal care closer to my service region, you can contact Beenleigh Veterinary Hospital.

Please note that I am not in it for your money, nor am I increasing fees or asking for payment at the time of service for existing clients. I am very much in it for patient care and not clientele so if I can’t tend to you, I will always try and refer you to someone who can give your animal the care it needs.

Once again, the amount of large animal vets is declining and to those stuck in regions without a vet that can tend to them, all I can truly say is - I am so sorry.

For northern Gold Coast large animal vets:
Vet Xpress - Dr Mel is excellent
TRH Equine Veterinary services

Please do not hesitate to call other vets if your animal requires care. I would be happier knowing you got someone out for your animal even if it isn’t me ❤️

Linnett

Equine vets are implementing new policies for emergency care. A recent survey revealed that newer policies now include charging higher fees for emergencies, limiting emergency services to established clients & requiring payment at the time of service, and more. These changes aim to improve compensation for vets, reduce the number of emergency calls, and enhance safety & efficiency. As the need to see emergencies is one of the important factors that drives vets to leave equine practice, it seems the equine veterinary industry is evolving to ensure continued access to care for horses.”

Let’s talk BLOODS 💉
Now there are multiple reasons as to why we should do blood tests! For the most of it, running bloods means we can keep track of your animal’s health and hopefully the results come back normal year after year. In some cases, an animal may seem relatively healthy but we will pick up an abnormality in their bloodwork (such as early kidney disease) and then we can discuss how to manage this condition with you!

In a more common setting, we find people will tend to run bloods when their animal is sick or has encountered an abnormal behaviour (ie. drinking more than normal and urinating more than normal). The changes in bloodwork can help us identify what is happening to your animal and treat appropriately.

The following cases below are as follows:
➖ Image 1: Colic in a horse
➖ Image 2: Hyperthyroidism in a DOG. That is correct! Dogs are generally prone to hypothyroidism but this dog in particular was HYPER- thyroid. Further investigation was done and it turns out that this particular animal has a hyperactive thyroid due to thyroid cancer.
➖ Image 3: Insulin dysregulation in a horse with EMS that had an acute episode of laminitis
➖ Image 4: A dog that was recently diagnosed with Hyperadrenocorticism after the owner found that she was drinking and urinating more than normal and her clipped coat took longer than usual to grow back. This dog has since been started on medication.

**** RECOMMENDATIONS ****
If your dog is on any long term medications, I would recommend a blood test every 6-12 months

If your dog is 8 and above, I would recommend a full geriatric health profile including SDMA AND T4 to be done at least ONCE if you have never run bloods previously.

If your dog is under 8 with no apparent health issues, I would recommend a pre-anaesthetic profile screening to be done just so you have a baseline of how your animal is going health wise.

➖ For lab work, we can do this in house at the clinic (results take 15-30 mins) or we can collect bloods from your home (usually take 24-48 hours turn around time). Please contact us if you would like a general health check and any blood tests to be done!

Check out this cool case involving a beautiful clydie who developed a severe infection. Foot issues can be common in horses and in extreme cases require radiographic assessment and the use of a hospital plate. Hospital plates are made by knowledgeable and professional farriers who are able to custom make a shoe with threads so that the plate is accessible and we are able to pack good things in and keep the bad things out. In this particular case, we packed the frog and surrounds with some metronidazole paste and covered it with a layer of iodine swabs. The shoe will stay on for up to a period of 6 months to let the underlying tissues recover. Having a good farrier is vital and we are lucky to have Stewart Farrier Service come and attend to get this horse back on the road to recovery!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thanks Joel for your hard work getting this boy comfortable!

What do you think of our new business magnets and uniforms? 😆 comment below if you love em or hate em 🌝

We offer not just service, but also really sh*tty puns and jokes. Part time vet, part time clown 🤡

If any of you know me, you’d know I’d take a fun friendship - client based approach over serious professionalism any day 😆

ALSO - I am totally aware that the ECG is abnormal and that I have spelt arthritic wrong hahahahaha. Bonus 10 points if you picked up on it too 😆

Sorry to those who have ACTUALLY met me. I swear I’m normal sometimes.

Let’s talk about HOOF ISSUES 👣

Horses spent pretty much all their time on their feet so it’s safe to say that hoof care is quite a big part of their health! By having a reputable and knowledgeable farrier as well as regularly tending to their hooves, most of these issues can be avoided. However, there are times where injuries and issues can occur. Some of these require work ups starting from a lameness exam, to nerve blocks, x-rays and stall rest / hospitalisation. As an example, radiographs of a horse which presented with a severe and acute episode of laminitis (Image number 2), showed that there was no pedal bone or capsular rotation and no sinking. This helps us evaluate and treat the horse accordingly with a farrier so that the horse can have the best chance of recovery.

Things we commonly see in the field:
➖ Trauma / Foreign bodies
➖ Abscesses
➖ Thrush and other infections
➖ Septic arthritis (joint infection)
➖ Hoof bruises, punctures, and corns
➖ Hoof wall cracks
➖ White Line Disease / Seedy toe
➖ Laminitis
➖ Navicular disease
➖ Bone cysts
➖ Fractures
➖ Pedal osteitis
➖ Canker or overgrowths
➖ Contracted heels
➖ Keratoma
➖ Frog cancer

With the current wet season on the coast, we are currently prone to hoof abscesses and thrush. Be sure to get in contact with a vet if you are concerned about a recent lameness, distal limb swelling or abnormal looking or smelling hoof!

Let’s talk about TEETH! 🦷

Equine dentistry is something that not only keeps your horse comfortable, but also helps with things such as weight maintenance, comfort with the bit and general gut health. By doing a dental yearly, we are able to pick up on small problems and get to them before they become big ones!

Dentals should be done under sedation as sometimes there is dental pain present, but more so to do a proper clinical exam, especially of the back molars. After a dental exam, the teeth are usually floated and a dental plan is made for the horse.

Here are some common dental issues that we see in the horse:
➖ Abnormal wear with sharp enamel edges on both the lower and upper check teeth. If pronounced this can cause painful ulcers and erosions of the soft tissues of the cheek or tongue
➖ Overgrowth is either secondary to a misaligned jaw (parrot mouth) or as a result of a missing tooth
➖ Fractured, displaced, loose or missing cheek teeth
➖ Diastema (gaps between the teeth where food collects) causing gum disease
➖ Caries: tooth decay
➖ Tooth root abscess which can sometimes present as a lump that is noticeable on the outer jaw
➖ Retained deciduous (baby) teeth
Blind (unerrupted) or abnormally large or displaced wolf teeth
➖ Abnormalities of the incisors

If severe, sometimes teeth need to be extracted surgically.

If you are overdue or are unsure about your horses teeth. Book in for a dental exam today!

Let’s talk EYES 👀

Eye injuries! The most common types of eye injuries we see in the field are corneal ulcers! Occasionally we also see non-healing or melting ulcers as well as stromal abscesses - all which need immediate veterinary attention!

There are a few tests that we can do in field to diagnose eye conditions such as a schirmer tear test (STT), fluorescein Stain (FS) and intraocular pressure (IOP). For mild cases regarding ulcers, lesions can resolve in a few days with eye ointments and anti-inflammatories. For moderate to severe lesions, they may require aggressive treatment such as placing a subpalpebral lavage (SPL) system where medications can be administered every 2 hours easily, or may require surgery.

Some ulcers can become infected resulting in an abscess. Others can develop into melting ulcers which can later on progress and rupture. We treat these aggressively with antibiotics, anti-fungals, plasma, a mydriatic such as atropine and anti-inflammatories and we always keep a CLOSE EYE on the EYE.

Other abnormal things that we see in the equine eye include:
➖ Conjunctivitis, generally from non-infectious causes such as allergy/irritants, blocked nasolacrimal ducts, uveitis or trauma. Can also be caused from infectious nature.
➖ Equine recurrent uveitis, from repeated inflammation of the eye (appears as a blue eye - known as moon blindness)
➖ Tumours such as squamous cell carcinomas, which generally affect the third eyelid, conjunctiva and non-pigmented areas of some horses.
➖ Cataracts, which can affect vision and cause blindness. Appears as an opacity (cloudiness) in the lens
➖ Trauma, usually occur when horses rub their eyes on objects or from accidental injury (floating incidents, running through fences)
➖Foreign bodies, twigs and grass seeds can become embedded when grazing in long grass
➖ Parasites (less commonly seen)
