I love when clients send us videos of them working with their dogs. Here Daphne’s dad works on her pivoting drill. I’m naming them client of the week for their amazing commitment to train their puppy right from the start. This is a fun little exercise to teach your dog to turn and pivot and heel in place with you. It also increases their back end awareness. Wufur enjoys his new PetGeek treat dispensing toy. He taps the remote and a treat is dispensed across the room. It’s a great way to mentally stimulate your dog and burn energy. Our only issue was we needed to tape the remote down as it would not stick to ground. Wufur was Rescued from @nycacc a reminder that wonderful dogs are waiting in shelters near you. Meet Mabel the 9 month old Schnauzer. Mabel’s family practices recall with her in Prospect Park. Getting the whole family involved especially the children is a great way to maintain consistency and teach dogs to have respect for the kids. When we control a dogs resources it puts us in a natural leadership position. Having fun with our dogs helps create a wonderful bond. We had a fun day training with Navesink Retreiver club yesterday. I got some coaching and constructive feedback in this video and Daisy did a good job too. This is a double mark where she’ll need to mark the first bird going down then go for the second bird then go back for the first bird. Then she’ll go for a single. It’s fun to watch videos to see what we need to work on and see the progress we have made. Julia Childs babysits and plays with my board and train puppy, Murray. Here is a video of some appropriate puppy/dog play. Julia loves playing with Murray but not all adult dogs are so keen on being mauled by sharp little puppy teeth. Clients are often taken aback when puppies play bite them, but it is a natural normal behavior. You can curb this behavior by having them play with puppies and older friendly dogs that enjoy puppies. Puppies explore the world with their mouths and their razor sharp teeth can often hurt and break skin. We need to redirect to alternate toys, use an interruption when they bite too hard and redirect to a toy or an alternate behavior then praise. I also like to teach dogs to lick or kiss instead of bite on me and put that behavior on cue. I carry a few toys around toy to replace and in general have kibble on me at all times so I’m able to redirect the puppy and reward alternate behaviors. Teaching a down is probably one of the easiest ways to get your dog to be calm. I tell clients to work 15 min a day on this with their dogs food. This way your dog can eat their meal while training and your not adding extra calories. One of the exercises was I am working on with Frasier is an emergency stop. Frasier should drop whether he is standing or running. I use a verbal cue and hand signal. Once his elbows hit the ground I will mark yes and toss his favorite ball behind him to prevent him from moving forward. This is great exercise to teach your dog. We’ve been varying the distance. In the event there is danger we will be able to drop our dogs where they are. Until we release them when it’s safe. Fourth of July is here and we know dogs and fireworks do not mix. We just wanted to offer some tips and suggestions for your dogs. Keep dogs inside during fireworks. Do not take them to any firework displays or walk them during the fireworks or when it’s starting to get dark. Run the AC or radio and provide high value kongs or feeding toys during this time. Peanut butter or wet food stuffed in kongs can be a great distraction for them. Close blinds and make the room dark. Some dogs like the bathtub and can lie in there until the chaos is over. For dogs that have already built up a phobia to fireworks do not try to push them through it it will backfire on you. Try to keep them as comfortable as possible during this time. Try to offer them alternate things to do in the house such as snuffle mats, kongs, busy buddy squirrels, bully sticks let them stay in the bathroom, possibly in the tub. Thunder shirts, DAP collars, cbd oil, can all be helpful in helping your dog through this. Talk to your vet about other options as well. Fireworks can cause debilitating fear and anxiety to dogs. So please be aware and keep your dogs inside once it becomes dusk. If you can get out of the city or as far away from fireworks as you can, do it. Close all windows and shades. Run your AC as background noise. Play music or white noise to drown out the fireworks. Give your dog a bone to chew on. Kongs filled with peanut butter or wet food are a great way to distract them and keep them busy. Make sure your doors are secure and if you have guests alert them not to let the dog out. More dogs get lost on this day then any other day of the year. We see more dogs fearful of the city after 4th of July. Keep all of this in mind a few days before the 4th and a few days after.
