✨Let’s talk food based reinforcement for a second✨
In order for our dogs to be reinforced for a desired behavior, we need to be using something of value to YOUR dog. For some that might be kibble and for others that might be beef liver. If you are constantly using low level rewards that have little to no value for your dog, you aren’t really reinforcing that behavior.
‼️The value of the reinforcement you provide transfers into the value of that cue/behavior.
Imagine going to work and being paid $10 for all your hard work. You’d be less than enthusiastic about it and that will definitely start to show in the work that you do.
Now imagine going to work and being paid $20,000 for your hard work. You’d have no problem giving your best because you are being paid greatly for your effort!
But keep in mind that this is dog specific!! Some dogs might turn their nose up to beef liver or cheese while others go crazy for it. Just because it worked for another persons dog, doesn’t mean it’s of value to yours!
What to do to be sure your reinforcement is rewarding?
1.) Get to know your dog’s preferences. Make a list of your dog’s favorite treats! I promise, your dog will love this game, and number them 1-5.
2.) I like to have access to several different options when training that way I can offer my dog different payment based on how much they are doing. If something is extremely difficult or I want a lot of value in that specific behavior, I will be sure to pay them heavily for it. So make a little doggie trail mix with some of their favorites 🐾
3.) Just because we up the value of our reinforcement, doesn’t mean we change the frequency in which they are being rewarded. Follow your training plan, move to intermittent rewarding when it’s time, and remember whatever you reinforce you will see more of! So don’t reinforce undesired behaviors!

This simple activity is unfortunately, one of the most missed pieces of the pie people neglect to do consistently with puppies, anxious or fearful dogs. How do these dogs start to understand the world isn't a scary place without experiencing it for themselves? It can be rather hard without properly advocating for them and creating the opportunity and space to do so. Doing this will deepen your bond with your dog, and establish a foundation of trust unlike any other. This is relationship building ❤️ #nashvilledogtrainer #championk9training #peoplewatching #nashvilledogtraining

✨Place work ✨ is an essential training technique that helps dogs develop self-control, relaxation, and focus. Here are some key benefits:
1. Promotes Calmness: Place work teaches your dog to settle down and relax in a specific spot, reducing anxiety and hyperactivity.
2. Improves Impulse Control: By staying on their place, dogs learn to manage their impulses, which is crucial for overall obedience.
3. Enhances Focus: Practicing place work helps dogs concentrate better, making other training commands easier to learn and follow.
4. Supports Household Harmony: With place work, your dog knows where to go during busy or chaotic times, promoting a peaceful home environment.
5. Aids in Desensitization: Regular place training helps your dog become comfortable with staying calm despite distractions.
6. Convenient for Daily Life: Place work is practical for when you have guests, during meal times, or when you need to focus on tasks without constant supervision of your dog.
Watch how Crispin relaxes on his place bed while I handle admin tasks. This is a perfect example of how place work can seamlessly integrate into your daily routine, benefiting both you and your pup.

Let's clean up your recall and start from the top!
So whether your dog is ecollar trained or not, lets first stop your dog from blowing you off when you call their name. For this you need:
✨ Your Longline ✨
We want to hard stop ⛔ them from continuing to blow you off or playing keep away. We personally use a leash anywhere from a 15 ft to 30ft longline.
Next, let’s re-establish VALUE in the Recall. If you haven't been rewarding your dog, lets take a step back and go back to the basics. You’ll need:
🧀 High Value Rewards 🧀
Over the next week, as you practice recall, you're going to reward for every repetition of the recall.
Lastly, let’s look at the picture 📸. How should the command be performed or executed.
The recall ends with a sit. This stationary position allows for you to leash up your dog or get your dog when you begin recalling out in the real world.
Check out Ginny showing us how it’s done! 🐾

🐾 Let Your Dog Think! 🧠Do you find yourself repeating commands all the time? 🤔 In our Reel, we're diving into the importance of allowing your pup time to think before responding. By giving them space to process, you're fostering problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding of commands. So next time you give a cue, give them a moment to think it through! 🌟🐶 #LetThemThink #DogTraining101 #dogtrainingtips #championk9training #nash #nashville
