Let’s talk about senior dogs and pain! For those who have followed for a while will know Paulie got IVDD last year and his front left paw kept knuckling so much so it was raw and kept bleeding. We worked so hard with lots of physio/hydro and rest alongside adjusting lots at home to help Paulie. After a good 6-8 months he was doing amazing so we took him off meds and just done keep in touch physio sessions every 8 weeks or so to keep on top of his health. Fast forward another 10 months and we started to see signs again but knew what they meant this time so we had a bit of a head start…..The trembling in the car, the excessive licking of his legs and just generally being tired and more needy. We’ve upped Paulie’s physio sessions to every other week and he’s back on some pain relief as this time it’s his back left leg which seems to be a bit weak but we’re sure with lots of hard work like last year with his front we’ll get him where he needs to be. Moral of the long post is to not ignore these signs from your dog. They aren’t trembling or excessively licking for no reason. They are signs of pain so go get them checked out at the vet so you can nip things in the bud sooner before it’s too late! For Paulie there are numerous factors involved… the cold could be aggravating his legs, change of flooring upstairs, possibly a bit of arthuritis but we know we’ll get him where he needs to be again. Paulie update: Paulie got groomed Saturday then we went for brunch and a walk around calderstones so when it come to our Sunday morning walk (we decided on Croxteth park) Paulie didn’t seem himself and didn’t want to walk much so we drove straight back home and let him have a rest day because that was his way of telling us that is what he needed. It kills me that he is getting older and I try my best to give him the best life possible and do everything I can for his longevity but it dawned on me on Sunday that he’s 12 soon and it’s so important that we read their body language as what we think they want to do isn’t always what THEY want to do or what they NEED and just like us, animals need to decompress and rest too or it could be a sign of pain 🥹 Take extra care of your senior dogs peeps - they are so precious! Never a truer word than this song! You’ve got my heart Paulie ♥️
