ave us a short history of what she knew about the dog or had been able to find out from researching what she looked like. Great time and expense was taken to find the best Decker Terriers in the country, from every kennel (and there are very few) in the country. I bought the best of the best and now we are breeding those dogs to create even better. BriarBey Decker Terriers is producing some of the nicest Decker Terriers in the country and we are proud of what we have accomplished!

Thank you Tina!
These puppies are the cross that was done 30 some years ago to create the Decker.

I have always said, I am an open book. I don't lie about breedings, and I don't falsify pedigrees. And I am not sure what you call this mess of information by someone who has never bred a single dog I do believe, never ran an actual breeding program. ODT plans to go for breed recognition in 2025. I feel like it's time. My hopes are if you want to stay in the UKC rat terriers...stay there. If you want to include your Deckers in the ODT foundation, do that. My hopes are that UKC will allow dual registration, you can do both. MAYBE our dogs will finally be able to participate within their own standard, for ONCE in their existence , for those who want to.
I have spent 16 yrs. watching Deckers being shoved to the back of everything, we can't show, the dogs do not meet rat terrier standards. Deckers have been the outcast of the rat terrier category for far to long. When I started true Rat Terrier breeders called the Deckers bastardized rat terriers...seriously. I was offended, I did not understand why...now I do.
I can not think of one breed, lets say a Doberman, that a breeder can add in another breed and call it a line of Dobermans. German Sheppard, add in another breed and call it a line of German Sheppard's. That's what happened with the Deckers. A breed never in the rat terrier heritage (Basenji) was added and it's called a line of rat terriers.
The ONLY thing that makes a Decker a Decker is the 52 dogs Milton bred 30 yrs. ago. DO THE MATH. None of those dogs in a pedigree, no Decker.
I would also like to note I did NOT name ODT ...Kuhn Terriers, so I could put a choke hold on the breed. UKC was threatened a law suit if they did not remove the Decker name from their registry, hence all of them are now rat terriers, there is no distinction. UKC removed it.
And ANYONE who thinks I'm going to ask Milton Decker's permission or anyone's permission to do anything has lost their flippin mind. Take on my work load, take on my expenses, my time, my dreams, my goals, my everything and we might have a discussion as to what I can and can't do. But don't hold your breath.

The difference. Left is an Old Dominion Terrier, right is a Rat Terrier, no Decker in him. Left would be 1/2 Basenji and 1/2 Decker. There's about a 4-5 mo. difference in age. Left would be BriarBey's Yogi. ❤

Our Story

Approximately 12 years ago while delivering a mare to a farm in Pennsylvania, I met my first Decker Terrier, she was about 12 yrs. old and was surrounded by 3-4 other family dogs but there was something about her that was so different than the others, her face was grayed, her movements were slower but there was a depth of intelligence and heart that you saw when you looked in her eyes. The owner gave us a short history of what she knew about the dog or had been able to find out from researching what she looked like. And the rest is history, I came home and started doing my own research. Great time and expense was taken to find the best Decker Terriers in the country, from every kennel (and there are very few) in the country. I bought the best of the best and now we are breeding those dogs to create even better. Bringing is all up to current day, the decision has been made to do everything we can to hold on to our bigger dogs. As it stands our only option is to out cross to what carries Chihuahua and toy fox terrier in their lines. Common sense should tell anyone you aren’t going to keep these dogs large and capable of hunting coyote, fox, large vermin and be so much more than rat and mouse catchers if you use those genetics. These dogs have always carried the full weight of handling everything that was needed for a farm dog to handle, we believe they can continue to do just that. The ONLY way to make this happen is to give them a name and a place of their own, a future of their own. The Old Dominion Terrier.
