For Astro
He was a stellar German Shepherd loved and adored. He was a "found" dog and graced the home for more years than expected. He played nosework with us for 5 years. He was a gentledog with subtleties that the world needs.
Godsp*ed magnificent dog. You will be missed.

Today, someone shared training advice by a local colleague with me. I don't share the same ideas in training.

Crazy as it sounds I think a lot about this. I don't always wish to be a critic even when they keep poking the snake. On some days, it's hard to resist the taunts.

Do I strive to change their minds?
I find I don't have a jackhammer to break through such hard cured cement and I have to allow some light and moisture to pe*****te my own cement. I would rather change the hearts and minds of clients.

Should I strive to change their minds?
I think it's healthier to just keep pushing forward with humane training with honesty and realistic kindness than it is to face what some offer in response.

I signed TWO Codes of Conduct and I honour them as much as I can. They include NOT disparaging other trainers.

Am I jealous of the business created with the instant changes? No.... because I know that's not behaviour change for the long term.

Just sayin'

short story long.... I was asked to assess a dog before a rescue said they would take him.
Family with 1 toddler and quickly expecting another. They had all kinds of ideas to "deal" with him. He was ALL over me and it felt like he was asking for a way out.
Intense assessment due to reports of resource guarding and reactivity. Lots of questions for the humans and I simply wrote down the answers.
The rescue took him under their wing. Thursday night I'm going to his agility graduation and I think I will cry (buckets).
Great dog and great rescue. No shock collars and no weird punishments. He's alive and thriving. Because of them.

I'll report in after the graduation. :-)

Be prepared!!

They are offering a survey for the public's experience at:

To help us improve the Alert Ready system overall, a third party partner is also conducting a short survey about the test.

Yesterday's storm in BC was a great chance to practice disaster preparedness.
Did you have your kit available and use it?
Do you have a kit for all your pets?
What did you miss that you could put in your preparedness kit?

Now that it's fresh in your mind, don't put it off.
Here are checklists, compliments of CDART (Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team) that can help you start to prepare.

CDART has created helpful resources to help you be prepared for when disaster strikes.

Good dog, Daisy!

An incredibly lucky cat has his canine companion to thank for saving his life after the dog led rescuers to a 30 metre-deep mineshaft the cat fell into.

The cat, Mowgli, disappeared on Oct. 20 and had been missing for six days. Owner Michele Rose told the BBC that she had “almost given up hope” of finding her cat.

However, in a true Lassie moment, she noticed her dog Daisy “going berserk” near the woods of their Cornwall, U.K. home, zooming around trees and trying to get her attention, so she decided to follow Daisy into the woods.

The springer spaniel took off down a path before she “stopped dead in her tracks” next to an abandoned mineshaft.

Rose said she called the local SPCA and fire and rescue authorities but it was too dark to access the mineshaft.

“Daisy and Mowgli are pretty good mates so she could probably tell he was down there,” Rose’s son, Hamish, told the PA news agency.

The next morning, the rescue teams returned to the mineshaft and were stunned to spot the young cat at the bottom.

Armed with cages and rope, the team worked for hours to rescue Mowgli, eventually lifting him to safety. Miraculously, the cat was uninjured.

“Without Daisy doing that Mowgli could still be down there, that’s for sure. She was persistent in making me follow her, it was amazing. Daisy is a superstar. She’s an amazing dog,” Rose told the BBC.

“If Daisy wasn’t the favourite child already, she definitely is now,” Hamish told The Independent.

And who says dogs and cats can’t get along?

For the many recently imported dogs who have died days after their arrival. I'm sorry you've lost your lives.
PLEASE! looking to purchase a dog online is easy. The hard parts are reading through the biographies that are not always accurate.
This is NOT animal welfare. You are not rescuing a dog by purchasing it from a broker. No burning buildings were entered and no rushing waves were breached.
Be smart and check your local shelters which are FILLED with wonderful dogs needing a home.
RIP little ones. I'm sorry we failed you.

This is FYI only. I've been following it for many years.
When I took in a 8 wk old puppy with a back injury, I was fortunate to find an acupuncturist. She treated the puppy for 3 months and the puppy went from being paralyzed to walking to running. This was done at a vet clinic "for supervision" but we never saw the vet after the first introduction. Her treatment was a complete success due to the skill and expertise of the alternative treatment.

I like choice.

Legislation has allowed for a monopoly in animal health care options despite the fact that complementary allied animal health practitioners have been working in the industry for decades. Now, the Competition Bureau of Canada is looking into this matter. As an animal owner, have you been denied access to an allied animal health practitioner? Submit a complaint. As a non-vet animal health practitioner, have you experienced barriers to practice, either by legislative exclusions, threats, or refusals to collaborate? Submit a complaint. Do you simply have concerns about lack of choice or option to select alternative / complementary care for your animal? Submit an advocacy suggestion.

Teamwork! students were divided into teams. One of the challenges was appointing a team spokesperson.
Task for Team 2A was to set a "simple" elevated hide.
Task for Team 2B was to set a "simple" inaccessible hide.

The jury is still out.
PS I didn't set the hides!!! :-D

Just my opinion...
if you haven't done work with audio of fireworks or added some enrichment toys for Hallowe'en, you've got a couple of options
1. Jump in your car at around 4:30pm and drive to an agricultural area where you can wait out the goblins until 9pm OR
2. Turn off the lights. Lock the doors. Pull the shades. Play peaceful music and cuddle with your dog. Have LOTS of treats handy.
If you have to take your dog outside to eliminate do it early. Don't feed your dog dinner and only offer very little water. (Your treats will be tonight's dinner!) Consider two leashes and just go outside with the purpose to p*e and come right back in.

Argh.... Happy Howl'eween.

On a lovely autumn evening with hundreds of geese flying overhead, we asked our dogs to search so we could watch their expertise.

Ragnar and Stanley searched outside and learned that a vehicle is just one big stinky box.

Pluto, Ukee, Kali, Bumble, Sawyer, Joker and Shasta did interior searches with V***r Wakes and string bags that dripped odour.
Clear the boxes, work the room, and celebrate the find!

Celebrate the dogs. Thanks for the laughter and comradery!
