Dogs love to sniff! It's how dogs take in their world. Sniffing releases dopamine into a dog's brain, which helps to reduce their stress and anxiety. It's stimulating their brain, and provides physical exercise through exploration.

Snuffle mats and balls are a great resource to help accomplish this, especially when the temperature outside is not optimal, like today in Alberta where we are expecting 27 degrees and above (that will melt my dog, how about yours?).

Use your snuffles to hide around the house for sniffing games, or feed their meals from them! It's a great way to beat the heat 🥵

Oh, and Happy Naked Gardening Day!

Volume up! Listen to those noses working! Meet Ben and older sister Lucy, who are new to the snuffle world. It doesn't matter what age of dog (or cat) you have, they need some enrichment to keep them mentally healthy. I love hearing Ben clearing his nose so much, get in there Ben!

Mom added, "Ben and Lucy love these two snufflers we bought for them! We put them away when not in use, and they get so excited when we bring them out. The dogs find them very stimulating. Thank you Auntie Edna for such an amazing job making these!"

I literally woke up thinking of a few more enrichment ideas - who loves you and your pets? Auntie Edna does!

There are always the balls and mats, but also:
*interactive feeders (some which are great for raw feeders too)
*food (and when I say food, I'm including kibble and treats here) in an empty egg carton
*the shell game where you hide food under a container and they have to sniff it out
*Licky mats, available in many pet stores and online
*Adventure boxes (thanks to Justice for Bullies for this idea) where you place food in egg cartons, smaller boxes, toys, etc., in a larger box and have them sniff
*Toilet paper and paper towel rolls lined up in a box (first saw this through Whiskers & Wags Pet Services) and toss a bit of food inside, or fold the ends up with a treat inside
*Wrapping paper twisted up with food inside

See where I'm going with this? It doesn't have to be expensive and it's in your home right now! And sure, some of these ideas are going to make a mess, but isn't it worth the 5 minute clean up to watch your dog enjoy something new that enriches them and works their brain?

If you live somewhere warm, can I come live with you? I want to be somewhere that doesn't make my face hurt when I go outside :s

Get those snuffle balls and mats out, it's SOOOOO COOOLLLDD outside! My dog uses a snuffle ball with dehydrated raw for breakfast, and a frozen Toppl treat dispenser for her dinner with lots of yummy extras.

If you don't have your mat or ball yet (I can help with that 😉), here are a few other enrichment ideas...treat dispenser with a bit of peanut butter or coconut oil, a wobble toy, a few minutes of training disbursed throughout the day, hide & seek with you, treats or kibble in a blanket or towel hidden in the house for a good sniffing adventure! What are your favourite enrichment ideas?
