Fun Facts about the Seahorse! 🐴🐟✨
Seahorses have a distinct look with a horse-like head, monkey-like tail, and a kangaroo-like pouch. Did you know only male seahorses have a brood pouch? 😲
Like a chameleon, they can change colors to blend in with their surroundings. 🥷🌿
There are 47 known seahorse species!🌍
Seahorses belong to the pipefish family. Since they’re not strong swimmers, they need a “hitching post” to cling to, like seagrass or branches.🌿
Seahorses and sea dragons are the only species where the male gets pregnant and gives birth! 🤯
🍽️ They mainly feast on small crustaceans like amphipods. Adults eat 30-50 times a day! Since they have no stomach or teeth, they suck their prey through a tubular snout 🧃👀.
📅 Average Lifespan: 1 – 5 years
📏 Average Size: ½ to 11+ inches (vertical); Pipefish up to 18 inches long
🍽️ Diet: Carnivore
🏠 Min. Habitat Size: 29+ gallons
🌡️ Water Temp: 74–80°F
Seahorses and pipefish can live happily with gobies, blennies, cardinals, filefish, and peaceful invertebrates 🦀🐙.
Always research new tankmates for compatibility! 🧐
Larger seahorse species are usually easier to care for. Great choices include the Tiger Tail seahorse 🐯, Kuda seahorse 🖤, and Yellow seahorse 💛.
Note: Seahorses are saltwater fish, except for a few brackish water species 🌊.

How to pack a Disaster Preparedness “GO” box for your pets 🐾🎒
When planning for a disaster, consider packing a “GO” box for each of your pets with all their essential items so you can simply pick up and GO in an emergency. 🚨
Use a waterproof container/tub and stock it with the following:
a) Food & water for at least 5 days, plus their bowls. 🍲💧
b) Medications and copies of pet medical records, proof of vaccinations, and ID tags. 🏷️💊
c) Current photos of your pets with their names and your phone number written on the back. 📸
d) First Aid kit. 🩹
e) Leashes, harnesses, pet carriers, tie-out leads, or portable pet fences PLUS paw protection. 🐕🐾
f) Pet waste tools – litter and a box, scoopers, poop bags, newspapers, towels, trash bags, and sanitizer/disinfectant. 💩📰
g) Toys, blankets, and calming treats/chews (helps with anxiety). 🧸🛏️
h) A solar radio/flashlight or lantern. 🔦
Stay informed with a pre-tuned radio or FEMA app on your phone. Know where to locate weather alerts and emergency info for your community. ☁️📻
Assume that the internet may be down, so your phone may not work during or immediately following a disaster. 📱

EGGS, to refrigerate or not?🥚
During the pandemic and with the rising cost of groceries, many of our clients started raising chickens and harvesting eggs for their families. Here are some fun facts about the chicken and the egg. 😷🐔🥚
1️⃣ Raising backyard chickens can be a rewarding experience and a great way to teach kids about nature, agriculture, and the responsibility of caring for animals. 🏡🌱🐣
2️⃣ Hens begin laying at around six months of age and can continue for five to 10 years, with peak production occurring in the first two years. 📅🐔
3️⃣ Hens will lay roughly six eggs each week. Egg production drops each year when hens molt (replace their feathers) and as daylight hours are lost. Hens need at least 12 to 14 hours of light each day to continue laying eggs. 🍂💡🌤
Fresh eggs come with a magical film from the hen called the cuticle or “bloom.” The cuticle seals the egg and helps to prevent bacteria from entering the very porous shell. It also helps to prevent moisture loss, which happens as eggs age. ✨🦠💧
Eggs that have not been washed and still have the cuticle intact can be stored safely without refrigeration for about two weeks. Eggs stored at room temperature will age faster. If you’re going to keep them longer than two weeks, it’s best to refrigerate them, they will keep for another two months refrigerated. Once eggs have been refrigerated, they need to stay refrigerated. If a refrigerated egg is left out at room temperature for a long period of time, it will start to “sweat.” 🧊💦

Introducing the Fun Fur U Kitten Corral!🐾🐱
With the ongoing pet "over-population" crisis 🌟 in our community, Fun Fur U took a proactive step this summer to launch our own program to assist our clients in reducing pregnancies and illnesses in their feral colonies.
The Fun Fur U Kitten Corral is a place for feral cats 🐈 and kittens 🍼 to come for wellness (meals 🍽️ and medication 💊 in a safe quarantine), recovery (after spay/neuter surgery ✂️), socialization (reduce the fear of humans 😺🤲), and prepare for adoption when appropriate 🏡.
To help fund this effort, we are asking our clients to "round-up" their pet care quotes to the nearest dollar 💸 and put that money towards our Kitten Corral program. We are donating our time ⏰ and space 🏠 to this effort as a way to give back to our community ❤️.
Stay tuned for more updates on our website and social media sites 📲!

As a professional pet sitter, I frequently get asked for my thoughts about pet insurance and which company is “the best”. Here are some helpful tips to consider while you shop your options for not only pet insurance but also pet preventative care programs. 🐾
1️⃣ Talk to your veterinarian 🩺 and ask them if they accept pet insurance and if they have any recommendations. Then, do your research. 📚
2️⃣ Check the fine print on the quote and ensure the policy will cover the medical care you’re expecting to be covered. Typical coverage and exclusions may list things like routine wellness, emergencies 🚨 (ie: urinary blockage), surgical (ie: torn acl), dental cleanings / extractions 🦷, chronic illness (ie: diabetes or cancer) and accidental injury (ie: dog bite, hit by a car), behavioral issues / training / treatments, breed specific conditions (ie: hip dysplasia) etc.
3️⃣ Understand the limits of coverage, your premium rates (does it increase every year) and the length of coverage and wait times ⏳ for coverage to begin. What is the renewal and cancellation policy?
4️⃣ Know what the claims process is. Is this a reimbursement policy or will they pay immediately? How long does the claims process take, what is the appeal process if your original claim is declined? 📝
I will be covering this topic in greater detail in a follow-up video. 📹

Creepy or Cool? Fun Facts About Tarantulas! 🕷️
Creepy or Cool? Fun Facts About Tarantulas! 🕷️
Some of the coolest critters we get to take care of are Tarantulas. They’re so beautiful and exotic. Here’s a bit of what we’ve learned about this low-maintenance, super-cool critter for small spaces:
🕷️ Common Name: Tarantula
🔬 Scientific Name: Theraphosidae
🍖 Diet: Carnivore
📏 Size: 4.75” with a leg span of up to 11 inches
⚖️ Weight: 1-3 oz
⏳ Lifespan: 5-20 years in captivity
Tarantulas are docile, solitary animals and are low maintenance. They are the perfect pet for someone who doesn’t have a lot of space 🏠 or the desire to touch or play with their pet. Just sit back and observe these fascinating creatures 👀. Their venom is toxic ☠️, and the tiny, barbed hairs on their abdomen can be very irritating to your skin if you come in contact with it.
Tarantulas are nocturnal predators 🌙 (they hunt at night). They hunt insects 🦗, frogs, toads 🐸, and mice 🐁. Tarantulas are burrowers and typically live in the ground 🌱. They grab prey with their legs, inject paralyzing venom, and then bite their prey with their fangs. They also secrete digestive enzymes to liquefy their victims' bodies so that they can suck them up through their straw-like mouth openings.
Tarantulas shed their external skeletons in a process called molting 🦪. During the process, they also replace internal organs, such as the stomach lining, and can even regrow missing limbs. Tarantulas can be very unpredictable ⚡. It’s best to maintain a “hands-off” approach by looking and not touching tarantulas, even when they are a “pet” 🚫✋. If a tarantula feels threatened, they will bite and “hair” you to defend themselves and escape… it’s best never to make your tarantula feel threatened 🚨. It doesn’t take much, maybe a breeze 🌬️ or an imperceptible vibration, to kick a calm animal back into instinctual survival mode.
Housing for tarantulas can vary from a plastic pill
Solar lights for power outages ☀️⚡🔦
Here’s a quick and simple way to never be caught in the dark 🌑 during a power outage…it’s these cool little, portable, solar “floodlights” 💡 that I keep charging around our home all the time.
Whenever we have a power outage (which thankfully isn’t often), I can take these portable lights with me out to do pet sitting 🐾 and am never in the dark. They’re super bright and easily light up an entire room well enough to see what I’m doing during pet care visits.
Consider getting solar lights for your home 🏡 or workplace 🏢 and never get caught in the dark again!
Have you tried any solar lights at your place yet? What other tips do you have for staying prepared during power outages? 💬✨

🐾 Paw Protection Infra-Red Heat Test 🐾
In this short demonstration, I’ll show you the dramatic effect sunlight has on the walking surfaces your pet will most likely encounter when out for a walk or run. ☀️🐕
The purpose of this demonstration is to educate pet owners about how hot asphalt, concrete, and artificial turf can become and why you should be more mindful and aware before taking your pet outside. Please consider proper paw protection for your pets before embarking (pun intended) on hot surfaces. 🐾🔥
As you can see, the artificial turf (fake grass) gets extraordinarily hot but cools down more quickly than the hard surfaces of concrete and asphalt. 🌡️ Remember the 7-second rule: place the back of your hand on any surface to check the intensity of the heat. If it’s too hot for your hand at 7 seconds, it’s definitely too hot for your pet’s unprotected paws! ✋⏲️

PROTECT THE PAWS!🐾🔥
As the summer heat rises 🌞, the risk of injury or harm to your pet’s paws increases, too 🐾. Please be mindful that asphalt, concrete, and artificial grass temperatures can be as much as 60 degrees hotter 🔥 (in direct sunlight) than the air temperature. So, even when the air temperature is a comfortable 76 degrees 🌡️…the blacktop or street surface you’re taking your pet on could reach well over 100 degrees quickly 🥵.
Do the 7-second test ⏱️ to ensure your pet’s paws will be unharmed when you venture out for a walk. Place the back of your hand on the exposed asphalt, concrete, or artificial turf and hold it there for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s definitely too hot for your pet’s paws 🐶❌.
If you must take your pet out when it’s hot, please consider some sort of paw protection 🛡️. There are many different types of pet shoes and booties on the market, so find something that works well for your pet 👟. It takes practice to get a pet comfortable wearing paw protection, so practice indoors frequently and let them get comfortable with the product you’ve purchased 🏡.
We have found the Dog Mocs brand to be the best-fitting and most comfortable paw protection on the market 🥇.
As a proud affiliate of the Dog Mocs brand, we encourage you to check them out at DogMocs.com 🐕👞.
