It is a nice afternoon in February, and the horses love resting in the sun.

Our farrier, Kole Schwarte, was at the ranch this week to trim hooves. Looks like this sleepy horse (named Goose) was napping in the hay when our staff woke him up for his trim. Goose looks good in whatever he eats! Our farrier trims 6-8 horses each visit, and he usually comes twice during the month.

What do you do with a gift of a giant peppermint lollipop? Our staff cut it into bite pieces and shared it with the horses. Some of the horses them absolutely love peppermint! Many just aren’t sure about this. A few followed Liz all over the corral to find more of the special treat.😃

We are through the polar vortex that covered our region this past weekend. The subzero temperatures were challenging. Happy to share that all the horses came through fine! We did have issues with water lines freezing on one of the automatic waterers, a float mechanism breaking on an automatic waterer, the drainage pipe freezing on the Canyon Ranch water tank, and a fuel line freeze in our ranch mini-truck used to deliver feed. Our head of maintenance (John!) is working through these items.
We prepare for waves of subzero temperatures by making sure the horses without thick coats, and those who are older, have blankets. We have plenty of free access to hay available for horses to munch on. Eating helps horses stay warm. The horses have many shelters to get out of the wind. We have heaters in water tanks. We keep water dripping where we can, in places like the clubhouse sink. And of utmost value – we have a staff who love the horses and brave all conditions to care for them. The two pictured are Kodie and Elizabeth, our horse care manager.
When the sun shines, even with frigid temperatures, horses can be found standing by shelters, catching the warm reflection off the white siding.

This morning we had an early morning vet appointment. John hooked up the trailer and got it situated before our horse manager arrived at the ranch. The horses were still out of the corrals following their night roaming the pastures. This curious group or friends came over to inspect the activities. The horse trailer was ready with hay to munch on during the journey. The horse patient (Bert), nickered a goodbye to friends before loading for his trip.

Fog and cold this past weekend! The horses looked like Christmas Card decorations on Saturday with frosty manes and tails. Many of them wore blankets on Sunday. Today we have 40 degree temperatures, with snow again forecast this coming week. Staff is getting those blankets ready again ☺️

ARRIVAL OF HAY FOR THE SOUTHEAST COLORADO HAY BANK

Blue Rose Ranch, in cooperation with the Colorado Unwanted Horse Alliance, is hosting a hay bank for horses in southeast Colorado. If you need assistance with hay for your horses, please contact Blue Rose Ranch at 303-796-7739 or email [email protected].

The hay is provided through a grant from the Colorado Unwanted Horse Alliance. This is a season for us to all come together to help families with horses who are dealing with economic challenges and perhaps unemployment. Blue Rose Ranch is honored to partner with the Colorado Unwanted Horse Alliance to help our communities in southeast Colorado.

This coming Tuesday, December 10, is Colorado Gives Day 2024. Their website is an easy way to make contributions to help care for the rescued and sanctuary horses at Blue Rose Ranch. This donation site is also beneficial to our organization in that on December 10, all contributions come to Blue Rose Ranch without fees deducted by the platform host. Blue Rose Ranch appreciates donations of all sizes...small donations add up and help care for the horses!

Another pallet of Equine Performance Senior Feed arrives. Each pallet weighs a ton, and has forty 50lbs bags of feed. We bring in a pallet every three weeks as we go through a lot of it to care for our senior horses. Cowboy, the ranch pup, likes to supervise as the feed is moved to the grain building. We keep pallets of senior feed, alfalfa pellets and beet pulp on hand to prepare meals for the older horses.

Brought in another load of alfalfa this morning. Each of those bales weights a ton! We have several varieties of hay for horses because they have different needs. For most, quality grass hay is best. Some of our older guys with marginal teeth need soaked senior feed pellets for some of their diet, but they also like the alfalfa hay. The leaves in alfalfa are easier for them to chew than grass hay, and it also has higher protein. All the horses benefit from the grass pastures at Blue Rose Ranch, and they love being free to roam those pastures every late afternoon and through the night.

Hard to graze after the snow but this group of friends was enjoying a walk through the snow. After their walk they headed back to the corrals where a large bale of grass was waiting.

Our region experienced a major snow storm Wednesday through Friday. Lots of wet snow following days of rain. Pretty to look at, but it sure was a challenge to care for the horses. On the main ranch, our staff got blankets on the older horses, and large bales of hay were in all the corrals for easy access by horses. Hay was delivered via wheel loader to the outlying Canyon ranch. We are sharing a photo of the tire tracks at the main ranch on Saturday following the storm. Yes...it is easy to get stuck in those ruts while driving, and while walking, one sinks two feet in that snow. All the horses came through the storm just fine.
