anada many shelters have a "No Kill" policies in place. However if a shelter becomes just too overcrowded............ Someone has to move out to let emergencies in. Although Canada is a large Country with a Big Heart, we only have so many homes available that will allow pets. Our population isn't that big, so should you choose a dog from out of Country shelters, you in essence leave one waiting patiently in a Canadian dog jail for another day, week, month, year. The dogs that come in from foreign Countries, often are found with health issues that may require a lifetime of expensive veterinary interventions and medications. Many many wonderful, healthy dogs are surrendered by families who have had a life change that doesn't allow them to take their beloved pet. They surrender their pets with the best intentions for them and shelters often know all the dogs training, breeding, feeding requirements that make healthy well loved dogs from good loving homes attractive to adopt and fit right in. Of course Canadian shelters also take in 'unknown strays' but even many of these have been found and cared for by foster homes that observe and get to know the animal's temperament, house training (or not) likes children or other dogs or cats etc. We have had many many wonderful shelter pets in our home over the years. There's years of how to love a Human character, within each Old Dog...

A middle-aged woman peeks into his kennel. She smiles. He wags his tail. Maybe she will adopt him, he’s thinking.

Then she walks away.

Par for the course. Everyone who peeks into his kennel usually walks away. Nobody wants an old dog. At this shelter, everyone adopts young dogs who can’t control their bladders. Humans want puppies. Not geriatrics.

If only humans could understand canine language, he would’ve told the lady all about himself and what a good boy he is. It’s a shame that humans don’t speak Dog.

He’s not sure how he ended up in this place. Once he had a family. But they didn’t want him. So they left him here. He waited for them to come back, staring out his kennel door. But his owners were done with him.

That was a lifetime ago. Since then, he’s been stuck in this loud room of kennels with dogs who cry all day long.

He’s overheard the humans’ remarks about him. “How old is that dog?” they ask, pointing at him. “He looks kind of gray.” “Mommy, I don’t want an old dog.” “Poor old guy, nobody’s gonna want an elderly dog.”

Elderly. Who would want an elderly dog? The worst part is, it’s been so long since he’s been touched. When you’re a puppy everyone showers you with affection. They’re always touching you. But when you’re an old dog, they just ignore you.

He wishes he could tell the humans what a good dog he is, tell them about all his skills. Being old has its advantages. For starters, he can hold his bladder, he knows how to watch TV, he knows how to cuddle, how to be patient, he knows how to fend off dangerous UPS men.

But it doesn’t matter. This kennel is life now. He knows that one day he will be led to the back room with the doctor, like all the other old dogs. And that will be the end.

The door to his cellblock opens. The place comes unglued with barking dogs.

He can see a little girl. She’s cute. She looks around for a few minutes. Surprisingly, she stops in front of his cage.

She says, “What’s this one’s name?”

“We don’t know,” says the woman employee.

“You don’t know his name?”

“We get a lotta dogs without names, honey.”

The girl approaches his kennel. He doesn’t bother standing. Why waste his energy? You see one kid, you've seen them all. She’s not going to adopt him. She’ll end up adopting a rambunctious Labrador-mix.

The child reaches through the bars. “Come here, boy,” she says.

He doesn’t move. She seems sweet enough, sure, but he’s no dummy. This is the same old song and dance. They pet you. Then they figure out you’re an elderly dog, and they keep moving.

“Let’s go, sweetie,” says the girl’s mother. “Let’s go look at the puppies.”

“But I want to pet him.”

A long pause. The woman says, “But don’t you wanna see the younger dogs?”

“Please?”

The cage door opens. This gets his attention. Namely, because his cage door NEVER opens.

The little girl steps in. He’s on his feet now. He’s nervous. Panting. Heart beating fast. Who is this child and what does she want?

She reaches her hand outward. She comes close. She rests her palm on his forehead. The child rubs his fur. And she doesn’t just rub him, she hugs him.

“You’re not too old,” the girl whispers.

Before he realizes what’s happening, the employee places a leash on him and leads him out of the kennel. They are parading him down the aisle. He’s leaving this dreadful place.

Can it be? Is this for real? Or is this a cruel joke?

All the dogs are screaming as he walks by.

In a few minutes, it's official. The little girl signs a stack of papers then takes him home. She names him Jackson. She gives him a brand new world. She even lets him sleep in her bed.

It all happens so fast that it still seems like some kind of elaborate fantasy. Yesterday; death row. Today; Buckingham Palace.

Sometimes, late at night, when he sleeps beside her, he still can’t get over how beautiful his rescuer is. This girl who makes waking up each morning worthwhile.

This 10-year-old child, who makes him feel as though he had a purpose in the world. Who taught him how to appreciate being alive. Oh, if this kid only knew what she had done by choosing him. If only she knew that she had saved his life. If she knew the devotion he felt. If she only knew how much he loved her.

It really is a shame humans don’t speak Dog.

During the great recession of the 1980s the USDA came up with a Grand Scheme to help keep dying farms, going bankrupt daily alive. That scheme was to fill them with something MORE LUCRATIVE than poultry and pigs, it was to fill those barns with PETS for the N/A Pet Srores. This includes small animals, exotic birds, cats and Dogs.
There are pet Auctions in the State's and Canada (Beaverlodge Charlie Lake) that sell pets to the highest bidder. In the US poor worn out Breeding bi***es, that have been bred on every heat and are basically untangled, very young dogs are sold like meat horses to other Puppy Farm breeders.
The BC Gov't banned the importation of these puppy mill pups into Canada as the BC HUMANE Societies, werw overrun by these VERY BADLY BRED 'purebreds' !! We should be Lobbying the US to shut down their Puppy Farms and also HALT THE IMPORTATION OF FOREIGN RESCUES, that often come from Mexican, US and Eastern European Puppy breeding farms.
We cannot find homes for the pets in the overfull Canadian Shelters and fewer and fewer Rentals allow pets each year. We ARE a large land base Country with a relatively Small population for our country's size. This means fewer forever homes, that are being stolen by foreign rescues in Canada.

The Amish and Mennonite community are known as "The Gentle People". Amish Country is known for its wonderful restaurants, craft shops and well-kept Amish farms. Beautiful fields where bearded men in wide-brimmed hats lead teams of shaggy plow horses tilling the soil. Hay fields dot the rolling hills of Amish country, and the fields that sustain the simple lifestyle are mostly bare. But one crop the most important crop to some remains: Puppies.

An overwhelming number of puppy mill operators are Amish. Inside the picturesque barns and wooden fences of Amish country in New York State and in all Amish communities throughout the US, "purebred" puppies are bred by the tens of thousands, many living in a hellish world of filthy, crowded cages. They are puppy mill puppies, and they bring in $4 million a year for the over 100 Amish and Mennonite farmers who supply pet stores, boutique dog-shop markets, and at least two New York dog dealers, according to the ASPCA. "It's not just some cottage industry by people who sell bread-and-butter pickles by the roadside," says Roger Caras, ASPCA's former executive director.

These "dog farmers" sell 20,000 puppies a year to wholesalers for an average $223 a pup, government records show. And it's making some of these quaint farmers quite rich. U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) documents show that one Amish dog farmer sold 1,293 puppies last year for an estimated $290,000 though federal inspectors have cited his farm for numerous violations since 1992 including overcrowded cages and inadequate sanitation, pest control, feeding and watering of animals. Then these sickly, genetic nightmares are delivered to the upscale pet shops. They given them a bath and blow dry them and fluff them up and pray they don't die before they're sold, often for $1,000 or more each.

The Amish don't say much about their involvement. They never do. No one at the local seed store would talk about puppy breeding last week. Or at the buggy maker's. Or at the lumber yard or the pet store. Not even at the corner restaurant. It's their dirty little secret.

Be warned though- the Amish life that is depicted for tourist is nothing like the reality. A simple Google search for Amish puppy mills will return thousands of hits. For farmers, a big crop of dogs can gross up to $500,000 annually, with successful operations netting six figures. For critics, the men in the suspenders and bushy beards are masking a cruel form of factory farming behind the quaint and pure image of the Amish culture.

According to Baker, even shipping a pup a week later, at eight weeks of age, is not a good idea. "Immune systems aren't developed by then and all kinds of health issues could arise."

In areas of the U.S. where Amish dwell, there is a high number of puppy mills. The Pennsylvania Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement lists 243 kennels in Lancaster County. Pennsylvania, 98% of them owned by Amish. Holmes County, Ohio, has 470 kennels -- more than any other county in the nation. While the Amish landcape is among the most beautiful in the world, the puppies bred at the mills NEVER see the outside of wire cages that are usually stacked on top of each other in dark barns.

One cannot throw all the Amish into the same category. Actions of some might sound rash. The puppy-mill breeders might be just a small fraction or a very small percent of the Amish population, but the majority of the population have chosen to ignore what is going on in their own backyards.

The Amish have been allowed to continue their inhumane treatment of animals without pressure from the rest of the population because of the money that tourism brings to Amish businesses. Most people who visit Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and Holmes County, Ohio go there to experience the Amish Culture. Yes, the Amish in general are a hard working, modest people. But they use the modern world to advertise and post the mill puppies on the Internet. These Godly people who shun the outside world have no qualms about using an outide third party to sell their stock.

The Amish continually breed poor quality puppies and keep their breeding dogs in a state that defies decency. They should be barred from dog breeding as they breed poor quality dogs. They get away with it because people think that religious people wold never do anything inhumane.

The following pictures were taken with permission of the Amish owner. All these dogs have been in wire cages all their lives, live totally confined to these spaces, receive no vet care and have deformed paws.

A person, whom I have banned for trolling this page with abusive comments, named Brian Coote, has left a bad review, called this a Bitcoin cover page (LOL WTHeck?) among other things, because I will not post the Mexican Street dogs, he's bringing into Canada.

Even though I explained this page was for Canadian sourced, shelter pets or pets that need immediate rehoming, (some conditions apply) he continued to troll and badger me.

Here is some of that conversation;

Brian Coote;
Hello

I brought 6 dogs back from Mexico in Feb 2023, rehomed 5 and kept one.

One of the families that adopted one of the dogs has hit some tough financial times and needs to give their dog up as they are selling their home.

I am not in a position to take him back even temporarily as I am recovering from surgery. We already have three rescue dogs and 9 rescued cats and are stretched to our limit.

Are you able please, to place a courtesy post in hope of finding a foster or adoptive family for Echo with my help?

ADV&V;
Hi Brian;
This is not a bricks and mortar building, it is only a page for those who have CANADIAN SOURCED pets, that are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and dewormed in good health, who need a new address. To post here. Once we have found homes for our own pets in shelters, we can begin to think about bringing in foreign pets in need. Every pet from another country, adopted here, steals a home and lengthens a Canadian pets stay in Canadian Shelters.

Brian Coote's Childish response to me explaining this page is for Canadian sourced shelter pets;
Ok. Whatever.
That’s not how I see the world. Have you travelled to third world countries?

ADV&C;
Well there are other pages for these pets. I have traveled to poor countries, yes. I believe we cannot help others, unless we take care of ourselves 1st. How do you think, Canadian shelters Make More Room for the ever incoming animals?
Yep you guessed it, the ones sitting in Dog Jail the longest, waiting for their Forever Homes, but have them stolen by a foreign rescue dog instead, are euthanized. You help that happen.

Brian Coote;
Maybe stupid “breeders” (I use that term loosely) should stop breeding the pit crosses that are filling up the shelters and other similar dogs that are not suitable for most owners or families.
Every dog I’ve brought back from Mexico has made an excellent family pet. So yes, some dogs should sadly be euthanized. Perhaps along with their deadbeat owners I wonder?

ADV&C;
HhhMm so street mutts in Mexico are better bred, healthier, temperament and physically than dogs who are temperament evaluated and seen by vets in Canadian Shelters, is what you are saying? Have you ever worked within a legit Canadian SPCA shelter? I ran the kennel for one for over 3 years, we rehomed over 350 dogs in that time.
Every dog we rehomed I trained to walk on a lead, come when it was called and sit for patting or feeding. Every one was; seen by a vet was spayed or neutered, if an appropriate age, vaccinated and dewormed. We rehomed purebreds, some ugly as hell mongrels, dogs seized from puppy mills and 6 Rottweilers from a drug lab out in the country.
ALL made good pets and Not one was returned, as the shelter has a lifetime return policy. We need to empty our own shelters 1st. Although Canada is a very large Country we have a small population, compared to other countries 1/4 our land base.

Each year, fewer and fewer rentals, are taking renters with pets, so there are few families to take pets and fewer spaces each year in homes for pets. That's a fact. By bringing in foreign street mutts, often carriers of foreign to N/A communicable diseases and other health or temperament issues, you are Enabling the Theft of a forever home, of a perfectly good pet, in a Canadian shelter, who is there often through no fault of its own.

FYI all animal's are temperament assessed via legit Canadian shelters and the bad ones are euthanized, especially if they have a biting or killing of other animals record. Yanking strays off of a street in Mexico tells you nothing about the dog. These are your dogs.

Not getting what he wants he resorts to this accusation, that I have no idea what this even is??

Brian Coote;

Looks like your bitcoin crypto page is going well. Are you sure you rehome dogs? Or do you scam people out of their hard earned $?

I would be VERY Careful about interacting with this strange, aggressive individual!!

This may or may not be a photo of said person??

Our Story

Either You are part of the Problem or Part of the Solution.

Adopting a pet from Canada makes room for another needy Canadian pet, to come in be assessed and get on their journey to a new life and home.

If you are thinking about adopting a shelter pet and live in Canada, please consider the dogs patiently waiting, from Canadian; homes, streets or rural locations, in Canadian shelters, for their New human to come and spring them from the Dog Jail, and take them home. In Canada, many shelters have a "No Kill" policies in place. However if a shelter becomes just too overcrowded............ Someone has to move out to let emergencies in. Although Canada is a large Country with a Big Heart, we only have so many homes available that will allow pets. Our population isn't that big, so should you choose a dog from out of Country shelters, you in essence leave a loving healthy Canadian, dog waiting patiently in a Canadian dog jail for another day, weeks, months and sometimes years, for their human to come and take them home. The dogs that come in from foreign Countries, often are found with serious, sometimes contagious diseases and health issues that may require a lifetime of expensive veterinary interventions and medications.

This can happen here in Canada too, but not as often and the shelter will know about any health issues and counsel prospective adoptees about the cost and treatments available to maintain such a problem...It won’t be an ‘expensive surprise’ 6 or more months down the road. Many many wonderful, healthy Canadian sources pets, are surrendered by Canadian families who have had a life change that doesn't allow them to take their beloved pets, into their life’s next chapters. They surrender their pets to shelters often as a last resource, with the best intentions for them, often with the pet’s accessories, UTD on vaccines, neuters, house trained, good with children and other pets etc. In these situations shelter workers often know all the dogs history as it pertains to; training, breeding, feeding requirements that make healthy, well mannered and loved dogs from good loving homes, attractive to adopt and fit right in. Of course Canadian shelters also take in 'unknown strays' , but even many of these, that have been found and turned in are cared for by animal experienced, foster homes that observe and get to know the animal's temperament, house training (or not) likes children or other dogs or cats etc. We have had many many wonderful shelter pets in our home over the years (350+).
