Evie 💕 one of our shy/fearfuls in our behavior consulting program. Evies guardians contacted me in June because Evie wouldn’t leave their closet, even 7 months post adoption 😭 During our first session, Evie was glued to her bed near her closet, panting heavily, wouldn’t approach wouldn’t take treats. She would go outside to potty maybe once a day but bolt back inside after she relieved herself. With a combination of medication, behavior modification and basic manners we are starting to see her confidence boost! This little lass is starting to explore, hangout in the backyard and goes out multiple times throughout the day to potty. She’s coming out of the closet and exploring the room more. She even is going into their living room to take treats! As you can see, she was engaged with me during our sessions this week and even took a treat out of my hand! Her guardians are so accepting and happy going at her pace. Evie has had lots of trauma in a very short period of time so all these baby steps are big wins for us!

A COMFORTABLE MUZZLE MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE ✨

Handsome Reilly upgraded is Baskerville for a beautiful muzzle! He is so much more comfortable wearing this muzzle long term. And, it doesn’t squish his tongue which hangs wayyyy out the side of his mouth. For Reilly, this muzzle upgrade means more freedom as he has room to pant, drink water, play and it doesn’t rub or chafe. For his mom, this muzzle means relief, knowing her pup is safe if a trigger spooks them when they are out and about!

Highly, highly recommend Big Snoof Dog Gear!

More puppies this week! Funny enough, I had almost the exact same session with both 15 week old golden doodle, Athena and 14 week old sheltie, Madi. Puppies explore with their mouth! Picking up dirt, leaves and sticks at this age is completely normal puppy behavior! Remember that when you make a big deal out of puppies, putting things in their mouth, it will quickly turn into a game. Ignore behaviors you don’t like, and throw a party for behaviors you do like!

Socialization isn’t just about being exposed to other dogs. It’s about having positive experiences with EVERYTHING you can think of. Last weekend was a massive, very successful weekend of socialization. Feiffer was happily exposed to people of all ages, the water, the sand, lots of other dogs of different sizes, breeds, genders, ages and temperaments. She learned to ride the paddle board and golf cart. She learned that she’s still safe when large groups of people come into the house during the day and night. She was exposed to umbrellas, loud boats, jet skis and so much more! If you have a puppy that’s younger than 5 months and want to learn how to properly socialize, reach out!

Years ago, I had a client fire me and chose to go down a board and train path for her insecure, frustrated, reactive dog. As she fired me she said that “she didn’t sign up to be a dog trainer” - or something along those lines. I was baffled and (at the time) hurt because I thought our sessions were going so well. I’ve thought about this client for years because I had never been fired from a job, and haven’t since. As I’ve grown and learned, I’ve realized why this statement has left me so confused. If you own a dog you are a dog trainer by default. Just like if you have a child, you are their teacher by default. Our dogs are learning every moment they are awake and it’s our job to guide them down the right path. Building up their confidence and skill and making sure they feel safe with us on the other end of their leash. My favorite clients I work with are always the ones who don’t necessarily have a specific goal other than helping their dog feel safe in their own skin and enjoy the process as they build confidence and ease anxiety. So my promise to myself as a trainer, is to always pass on the guardians who just want a “quick fix” but aren’t 100% committed. My promise to my clients is that I’m here for the long haul. Whether you worked with me 5 years ago or 2 months ago, I am here to help guide you to be the best dog trainer you can be for your dog. Never hesitate to reach out, I am just one click away!

Please enjoy this picture of Feiffer. Who somehow got her frisbee that she was playing with wrapped around her belly, but that doesn’t stop her from finding another toy and keep on playing.

Also, my little water dog, Stellaluna, because she’s a cutie.

Tips to keep your dog cool on the trails:

• avoid cardio! If it’s hot outside, providing cardio can make your pup dangerously hot. Go slow and focus on sniffing rather than distance.

• watch the temperature. My general rule is if it’s above 80, it’s probably best to just stay home until it cools off.

• avoid direct sunlight. Find trails and parks with plenty of shade for you to explore. Even better if there is water nearby!

• slow sips of cool water. If your dog is hot and panting heavily, we don’t recommend letting your dog chug water. Chugging water can upset the stomach causing your dog to regurgitate or even causing bloat. Instead, give your dog a few sips then let them digest a bit before offering more.

• plan to go home if your dog is too hot. I am a hiker who always pushes and encourages my friends to make it to the end! But, if your dog is too hot, just go home. It’s not worth pushing them!

• force breaks. I will stop and force a 5-10 minute break to let their heart rate slow down before proceeding. It might be hard for them but, this is a great time to offer water, play find it or encourage some sniffing!

• bring sunscreen! Yes for your pooch! If you have a short hair dog who has skin exposed they need sunscreen just like we do. Protect your dogs from sunburns and skin cancer!

• cooling jackets and bandanas. Good quality cooling products work for some dogs. Try it out and see if you notice your dog seeming cooler.

• bring extra water to pour on your dog. Instead of dumping water on your dogs back. Sq**rt or mist their stomach, head, neck and paws.

• know your dog! Remember each dog handles the heat differently. If your dog is a large or giant breed, overweight, recovering from an illness or injury or is brachycephalic they may not be able to handle high temps as easily as other dogs.

• watch for signs of heat exhaustion and know where your closest emergency vet is.

• treat your pup to some air conditioning on the way home!

☀️ HIGH TEMP REMINDER ☀️

Walk and train clients, this is your friendly reminder that Katie‘s Clever Canines will supplement walks with in-home training and neighborhood park visits when temperatures are 80° and above. We do this for the safety of your pets since there is a higher risk of burnt paws and heat stroke. Please help us out by providing cold water, fans, cooling jackets, and frozen treats for your pets. If you prefer to cancel your session, please let your trainer know ASAP.

6 tips to keep your pets safe this Independence Day!

1. CHECK THEIR ID TAG - Make sure your pet is wearing visible, up to date identification at all times.

2. TWO SAFETY BARRIERS - Always have two safety barriers. For example, putting baby gates on doorways and using two leashes for potty breaks.

3. EXERCISE AND MEDICATE - Make sure to exercise and medicate before the festivities start.

4. STAY CALM AND COMFORTING - Remember that your pet is having a hard time. Reframe from scolding them. Be comforting and understanding to avoid added stress.

5. GIVE THEM A SAFE SPACE - Keep your pet in a small room or in their crate during festivities. Make sure they have their favorite toys, chews, water and some enrichment. Remember, some pets want comfort, others prefer to hide
on their own.

6. MASK NOISE AND SPRAY PHEROMONES - Play gentle music, white noise or have the tv on where your pet is staying. Close doors, windows and shades to damped noises and bright lights. Spray room with pheromones for extra comfort.

Have a happy and safe 4th of July 🇺🇸🦅

Katie’s Clever Canines lost a piece of our heart this weekend. I’ve been dreading writing this post for some time. But, I know, even if it’s just through Instagram, Maggie has touched so many people. So I am heartbroken to inform you all that we had to say goodbye to Maggie this weekend. She was one of my very first clients ten and a half years ago when I was a pet sitter working at her doggy daycare. She was only 14 weeks old when we met. She was the cutest puppy with the biggest oversized ears and paws. Shortly after I met Maggie, I got a Dane of my own and it was love at first sniff between them. Fast forward 5 years, Maggie’s mom was one of the first to sign her up for my walk and train program. 4-5 days a week for the last 5 and a half years. I always look forward to Maggie’s sessions, it’s like seeing a family dog. She always put a smile on my face when she would want to zoom across the street, jump in puddles and play bow at all the crows. It’s hard to come up with words when you lose such a close friend. So, I will leave you with this; a true friend is never truly gone, their spirit lives on with the memories of those who love them 🤍

If Maggie has ever put a smile on your face, kind words, condolences or advice for grieving a loved one would be much appreciated for Maggie’s mom to read while she is healing and finding peace.

Rest in peace Mag Pie 🐞 I know you are romping around with Sevy once again 🤍

The KCC family grew on Friday! Meet Feiffer June 🤍 she’s a 9 week old blue heeler who loves snuggling, chasing the ball, food and playing in the sun. She is wicked smart and is fitting into our family perfectly. I’m excited to bring you some puppy content as we go through the puppyhood journey again. Wish us luck!
