BEING THANKFUL.

This is a season of reflection and review, where we look back at our unique journey to this moment and try our best to see the many blessings and opportunities that have been gifted to us. Often times those blessings were preceeded by changes or challenges but as we passed through them, we emerged with a greater understanding and a special enrichment of the next part our journey.

2024 was not an easy year for many of is, myself included. Real changes and challenges - personally and professionally - had to be faced and overcome, creating some profound alternatives to goals and plans. Each of us had to dig deep find the strength and fortitude to keep moving forward one day at a time. When we stop, take a breath and reflect we are often surprised at what we really endured and accomplished. That needs to be celebrated.

Being thankful is not always easy. Yet when we try our best, each day, to live and move forward in Gratitude, Love and Service we find that we are more aware of the many gifts and blessings set on our trail. Each sunrise grants us the opportunity to be better than we were the day before and shines a light on the horizon we are riding towards.

I am incredibly thankful for each of you who have followed along and been part of this community. I am thankful for the opportunity of fellowship and learning we have shared. I am thankful that - together - we can create partnerships based on connection, communication and confidence. I am thankful for the stories shared and the memories created.

2025 will be Herr soon! I am thankful for the chance to share the trail and craft new experiences with you.

Thanks for sharing the trail.

"Colder weather" in the Sunshine State is here. Lows in the 50's. Highs in the 60's. Will be breaking out the long sleeve shirts now.

The season of joyful chaos is upon us. Remember to breathe in, breathe out and move forward. Love deeply and laugh fully. Set aside those things and those people who demand much and give little...or nothing in return. Be kind to yourself and try each day to grow. Progress, not Perfection.

Have a beautiful and blessed day my People!
You are love and cherished.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS: A Good Equine Citizen

As we travel the county leading Clinic Experiences and presenting at Expos we encounter a common scenario: Hard to Handle Horses. This is even more challenging when the horse has to be boarded at a facility and the staff that works there. As a horse owner, we are obligated to ensure our horses are Good Equine Citizens!
What is a Good Equine Citizen? Here are some key points:

• A Good Equine Citizen is one that can be caught and haltered with a minimum of fuss.
• A Good Equine Citizen is one that can be lead without being pushy or a space invader.
• A Good Equine Citizen is one than is patient and respectful of the routine.
• A Good Equine Citizen is one that can be backed up without having to tug on the lead rope/halter too firmly.
• A Good Equine Citizen is one turns to face you when you enter the stall.
• A Good Equine Citizen is one who can easily yield its hind end upon request.

So as a horse owner, you have to ask yourself “Is my Horse a Good Equine Citizen?” and “Is it a good fit at the boarding facility?” Be honest in your answer. If the average barn staff member cannot work with your horse in the manner noted above during regular daily operations then it is not a Good Equine Citizen. It then falls to you, the horse owner, to assist your horse to be more aware of the social contract of behavior so that they can be comfortable handled.

If you have any questions on how to help your horse be a better Equine Citizen –which impacts their ability to be a Good Equine Partner –please feel free to DM us here on our page or email us at [email protected].

“C.P.R” AND HORSES

Partnership and Connection is important to every “Student of the Horse.” Building these elements into one’s horsemanship journey in a critical part of long term success and crafting a partnership that can endure a great many challenges. One approach that can be helpful in creating the partnership that is desired, which we at Lucky Star Horsemanship use, is categorized as “Equine C.P.R.” In the partnership between horses and humans, C.P.R is crucial. It provides both parties with everything they need to be successful and enjoy the ride today and the journey into tomorrow.

Now, you are asking “What is C.P.R?” The short answer is this: C.P.R stands for CLARITY, PATIENCE and RELEASE.

CLARITY starts in the mind of the Human who visualizes what the request to the horse will be, then clearly re quests the action from the horse through the proper use of their natural aids, providing the horse a clear picture of what is being requested. Clarity is also the position, energy, focus and intent of the human when working with the horse. Clarity originates in the mind and is activated through the body. If that pathway is murky in any way, clarity is impacted.

PATIENCE starts with the Human allowing the Horse time to process the request and then act upon it. Sometimes this takes a little while for the horse to figure out what the “right answer” is. Being patient allows the horse to own the right answer and gives him the confidence needed to continue to believe in the human’s leadership. The human must be a Teacher and a Partner, not an Adversary, to the horse. Patience allows trust to develop. Initially we use a “four count” to pace our patience (one-and-two-and-three-and-four), before we increase the energy of our requests. Patience ties into the feel and timing aspects of teaching a horse to respond to requests.

RELEASE is basically the ceasing of the request. When the horse gives the human an honest attempt at compliance, the human needs to stop requesting and reward the horse with a mental break (rubbing on them works too) even if it is just a few moments. Releasing the request lets the horse know they got it right, which inspires them to continue to look for right answers in the future. “Love on your horse, more than you think you should” is a saying we at Lucky Star Horsemanship apply in our release/reward approach when working with our horses. Being social creatures, the horse responds to the release/reward approach in positive ways that carry great impact.

C.P.R is a “simple” concept but it takes real effort and practice to execute properly. C.P.R impacts feel, timing, trust, connection, communication and even confidence. Engaging the horse’s mind, body and spirit requires the human to be a Teacher, not a Trainer, and reminds the human that Leadership is really guiding the horse to the results sought after in a manner that is clear, kind, and fair.

As Students of the Horse we must consider the horse, its nature and its needs in everything we do with them. Through the application of C.P.R the horse and human can thrive together, achieving the goals set, and build a long lasting partnership.

If Lucky Star Horsemanship can help you improve your Equine C.P.R. Skills or just assist you on your journey to a stronger partnership with your horse please DM us via our page or email us at [email protected].

SETTING BOUNDARIES AND CREATING RAPPORT WITH YOUR HORSE

In many of the conversations between horse owners and students of the horse, we often hear the phrase “My horse is good BUT it does….” This usually indicates that there is an unrecognized gap in the connection between the horse and human. It happens to all of us. The boundaries and expectations may not have been as clearly defined as they needed to be when the partnership began. It is often recommended, in response, that the foundation may need some attention and with a little focus and effort, everything gets stronger.

Striving to be an effective Leader means setting boundaries with your horse to help it be a good Equine Citizen and Equine Partner. Horses that exist within the world of humans should be safe to handle, respectful of space and presence and be willing to “get along” by being comfortable being led in all aspects of the human/horse interaction. Setting boundaries gives the horse a sense of security and confidence. Considering our horses are herd animals that thrive under leadership and social structure, it really falls upon us to create an environment that allows the horse to understand what the boundaries are and what good behavior is. This takes focus and dedication on the part of the human. We give our horses the security, social structure and “love” they need to thrive by setting boundaries and clear expectations through effective leadership and training. Never feel bad about setting boundaries or expectations for your horse. They will be happier for the leadership.

Horse give us so much. It is our obligation to create safe places for them to thrive in partnership with us!

Change in a fact of Life.

Every day change happens. Sometimes change is positive. Sometimes change is challenging. Sometimes change hurts in incredibly profound ways.
But change is a fact of Life.

How we deal with change is what matters in the end. How we adapt, grow and evolve in response to change will determine the trail we take and what the ride will look like.

Change is happening here at Lucky Star Horsemanship. Adaptation, evolution and eventually growth will occur. It may not be an easy process but it will be a positive one!

We look forward to staying in the saddle and riding towards the horizon with you! Thanks for riding along with us.
