SMALL DOG CARE!

Small dogs are often deemed "easier" because they can be picked up, they can be better "controlled" through pulling them on a lead or otherwise forcing them where they don't want to go.

Unfortunately this is often why small dogs end up with aggressive behaviour presentations. I encourage us to treat small dogs as if they were big and stronger than us.

My littlest has started to communicate a preference to stay outside and not come in from a walk. She will plant her feet and lean back into any tension on the lead. It would be so easy to just pull her in to the gate anyway but I stop and listen. What is she telling me? She doesn't want the fun to end? What can I do to remedy this that isn't just use my weight against her?

*Don't pull your small dog towards something they dislike eg a bath, just because you can.
*Don't pick your small dog up to go towards something they dislike e.g a child.
*Don't show them that you don't care how they're feeling, it's going to happen anyway.

Too often small dogs are given the blame for their extreme communications. 'Small dog syndrome' for example. This couldn't be further from the truth. Small dogs will feel that they're vulnerable and that is what drives their behaviour, not a mistaken identity.
