I took this video after a quick 30 seconds of training her how to do this for the very first time. Her intelligence always amazes me with how quickly she picks up on things!
We've been working on up/downs of sit/stands in order to increase her flexibility. You can see in the initial sit that she's not quite warmed up yet. It still takes her a little bit to settle in to sits due to the tightness in her muscles.
This particular exercise is known as cavaletti conditioning and, in this instance, is intended to train her to alternate using her back legs when overcoming a "hurdle." Her current method of overcoming hurdles, such as climbing stairs, is to lock both her back legs together and hop up or over an obstacle. This incorrect method means that her front legs are supporting the majority of her weight. This doesn't offer her muscles the much needed opportunity to strengthen and stretch themselves in the way she needs to maintain full mobility. So, here we are, practicing how to flex and bend her back legs in order to step over an object rather than hop.
She picked up this idea very quickly and I am so incredibly proud of the amazing progress she made in such a short time!

The past few weeks have been so incredibly busy with the holidays, but I wanted to share a video of how well Bonnie is doing in her swimming! The best part is how much she is utilizing her back legs... just look at them go! That's exactly what we're wanting in order to help keep improving her mobility.
She's not a huge fan of the water, but she's getting more and more used to it. And this little girl is a torpedo! Super strong swimmer and, when she is attempting to get out, ridiculously fast! 😆 It's extremely entertaining (on my end) watching the trainers try to keep up with her as she speeds past trying to find an escape. She's like a little dolphin! 🐬
A huge THANK YOU and shout out to HealingWatersCanineExperience for not only doing these sessions with Bonnie, but six of the sessions were donated, so they are at no charge to SOS! We are so appreciative and she has been improving so much! 💞

When you're a puppy & your foster mom scolds you for chewing on your damaged leg, it's only proper to throw a tantrum, right? 😏 It's a puppy tantrum though, so at least it's cute! 🥰
I'm sorry I haven't given you all a Bonnie update in a while! Things have been a bit hectic recently! Her original rehab consultation was delayed which actually worked out well because last Friday she was finally able to get her cast removed. She is officially cast-free!!! 🥳 Unfortunately, she does still have to wear her cone for several more days, just while the wounds on her leg heal, but I still occasionally allow her supervised cone-free time to bathe herself and scratch pesky itches. (Chewing on her leg is a definite no no.) She's as adorable as ever & definitely becoming more & more of an energized & rambunctious puppy!
She has gained a few pounds, so her ribs aren't quite as visible as they used to be. Her back legs, however, still need quite a bit of work... they are hardly weight-bearing & need to gain quite a bit of muscle yet.
After her initial rehab consult, she will be attending rehabilitation sessions once to twice a week that will consist of laser therapy, water therapy (underwater treadmill), massages, & more. We are doing our absolute best to ensure she regains & maintains full use of both of her back legs. There are still some fractures that are healing, but they have to be left on their own. At this point having a cast wouldn't really serve much of a purpose.
The best we can do for the moment is give her mild exercises and try to keep her from crashing into too many things! Easier said than done!
The vets anticipate that Bonnie will very likely have arthritis when she gets older. I already have her on glucosamine, but we're adding fish oil to her diet as well. Together, hopefully, that will give her much better health and longevity before she ever has to endure any joint pain. As a smaller, leaner dog, she has better chances.

Today Bonnie and I are thankful for all the generous donations she's received so far! Her surgeries and rehabilitation continue to cost so much and it's donations from people like you that allowed her to have a second chance at life. 💞 It's hard to believe that just a few weeks ago I was sitting in the car crying at the emergency vet preparing myself to go in and say goodbye to this sweet little girl. Humane euthanasia was seriously being considered simply due to the cost of all her surgeries and the fear that her quality of life would not be enough for her to go on. Save Ohio Strays stepped up in the biggest way possible though and saved this little girl's life. They fronted the cost of all her medical care and gave her a fighting chance. This sweet little Bonbon stepped up to the challenge and showed us all what a beautiful warrior she can be. She is not letting this opportunity go to waste! 💗
We had a huge achievement when we got home today: Bonnie used her right leg, which had the FHO, to climb up half a flight of stairs! She has recently been favoring her left casted leg which is a bit concerning. We want her to keep using her right leg in order to maintain muscle strength and mobility. So it was an amazing feat to see her using her right leg to push herself up each individual stair. (I might have set a few kibbles of dog food on each step as motivation.) 😏😉 The work she put into it a was well worth it though! And we will definitely be adding that to our PT routine to encourage muscle growth! We're both very much looking forward to the day when she can manage the stairs all on her own! 🥰
Thank you all for the continued support and following along with her story. It absolutely means the world to us!
For anyone interested in contributing to Bonnie's continued care... we are only able to provide her with this level of care and rehabilitation because of the generous donations from people like you. Between the surgeries, check ups, and rehab, her v

Well... this post takes an unexpected twist. 😐
Someone found their voice. 😂
Bonnie's got herself a big girl bark! (Volume warning.)
She got to enjoy a few cone-free minutes before dinner tonight. And she was doing her darndest to get Cassie to play with her. As well as to tell me that it was definitely way past time to eat already.
Cassie has been struggling with not being "the baby" anymore... lots of jealousy and begging for my attention. She's also not quite sure how to act around Bonnie: knowing that she's fragile, but still so full of energy and personality. Reminds me so very much of Cassie herself when I first brought her home! I definitely keep comparing them since they have such similar backstories. Which also gives me so much hope for Bonnie's future.
We have officially scheduled her next cast change for 2 weeks from now. The vets are very hopeful that it may be the last cast she needs. 🤞
Oh, lordy...
Well, I was in the middle of making this post when I realized that Bonnie had completely soaked through her diaper. Apparently I gave her a bit too much water with her dinner tonight, which is something that I do with all her meals since she was dehydrated when I first got her.
So, as she had a bit too much liquid tonight, it seeped out of the diaper and right into her new cast. Which means... we are once again at the ER vet in order to get her cast replaced. Definitely not how we wanted to end the night. 👎
Not getting her cast replaced properly the first time this happened (before she came into Save Ohio Strays care) is what caused her leg to literally start rotting away within the cast. We did not want to risk that happening again, especially given the poor state her leg is still in. It's been healing wonderfully and we don't want any setbacks in her recovery.
So, once again, another trip to the ER. And, once again, I'll implore you that if you have the opportunity, donations towards rescues like SOS are so truly appreciated and necess
