Avalon is in a lot of pain and the only option this morning is emergency surgery. She’s getting prepped right now.
Please send your love and prayers to her and Charlie during this scary time. The doctors have been incredible and I’m very hopeful the surgeon can save sweet Avalon.
Just getting home from a very long day. Avalon is at the equine hospital down in GA. They’re taking very good care of her. They found a bullseye lesion in her small intestine. We are hoping the intestine can fix itself soon, sometimes they can. If not, a very expensive colic surgery will be required. Needless to say we are all very emotional and drained. Thank you all for your love and prayers. We appreciate you.
Our sweet girl could use your prayers right now. She’s experiencing a colic episode we haven’t been able to pull her out of since this morning. Our awesome Vet is on her way. Avalon has gut sounds, ate, drank and pooped but is still colic. Prayers, good vibes anything positive you have to send her way are greatly appreciated.

First time working Avalon at Liberty over Cavaletti polls. Out here in the hollar, we have country cavaletti poles lol made from tree stumps and logs. These girls know how to get ‘er done 😂🐴💕
This sweet girl spent the afternoon getting to know her two boyfriends 💕
Last week we turned everyone out together for the first time and Avalon decided she wanted to be with her human more than the horses and jumped the fence 😳🤦♀️🥳 Charlie was extremely excited because this girl can JUMP! Her mama was more concerned about getting her haltered again 🙀
Today we all hung out together for the entire afternoon, it was glorious! Everyone loved on each other and enjoyed the sunshine and warm weather.
Avalon is going to get a new pedicure in her near future 🐾
We are so thankful for these amazing automatic waterworks we have in each horse stall in the barn, they save so much time and ensure the horses never run out of water. But… when a wild horse decides to get a little rough with it, the water doesn’t turn off and then the stall floods… cleaning buckets of mucky water is not what we wanted to be doing on a busy Monday morning. Happy to report her stall has been cleaned out and Avalon is happy and dry. Now this mama is ready for a shower after cleaning that mess 💩
Sunday Funday 💕 Charlie had an awesome ride with Boston, got a saddle on Avalon for the first time and watched a beautiful porch sunset before having a dance party in the kitchen with mama tonight 🎶💃💃 😍

Tonight, Charlie and Avalon worked on walking over and on different obstacles on the ground. At first, the big pink scary mat was a little scary, and they worked on it one step at a time to where she was able to stand with 4 feet confidently on top of the mat. Proud of this duo!
It was a big day for Avalon! She participated in an equine retreat and did absolutely fabulous💕
When Charlie’s away, Ma and Pa get to play 🥰 barn dates are the best.

With all four of us on deck today, we decided it was time to move Avalon from her temporary pen to the barn. This was a risky move with all of the open space for her to spook and run into the national forest, but she did AWESOME!!
Charlie confidently led her down the barn driveway (new scary hard footing), into the nice big barn (scary enclosed space) and safely into her stall (scary smallish box of concrete). She is happily munching on her hay and all settled in for the night 💕
Team Merritt even worked hard to move the panels we borrowed from the round pen for her temporary holding stall back to the pen! She now has a nice area to live + learn day and night ☀️🌙
Charlie has been working on picking up Avalons feet. They certainly are beginning to have a way of communicating 💕🐴

Charlie practiced a lot leading her around in her pen using pressure and release. We wanted to make sure she was fully connected with Charlie and wouldn’t want to bolt as soon as she was out of confinement. She did great!
How can we be mad with a face like that. She’s itchy with the unusually warmer weather we’re having and rubbed her bum right on through the board and batten barn! Little stinker was so proud of herself with the big grin 😆
All boards have been replaced and she’s safe in her paddock 🐴
Little miss Avalon got a fancy pants new halter and let Charlie put it right on her. She looks good in turquoise 💙
Avalon also had her first experience of being a part of our Healing Herd of Horses today. She meet a group of veterans, did a breathing exercise with them and allowed them to feed and scratch her neck 💕
Huge milestone today! After a couple weeks of settling in and working with basic touch all over, nose in halter, brushing and just gaining trust, today, this little girl decided she was going to happily let Charlie easily put her halter on. She put it on, took it off, put it on, took it off, put it on… so great! Avalon even responded to gentle pressure while leading around the pen nicely 🙌
Avalon was introduced to a variety of brushes today! This morning we used a curry comb to scrub off some mud and this evening after her halter training session she enjoyed a niece soft brushing all over. She’s so willing and sweet!
We ended a great training session with some awesome neck scratches tonight. She’s such a sweet little horse 🐴 💕😍
Charlie is certainly earning Avalons trust one day at a time 💕Avalon loves neck scratches and stands for kisses while waiting for her training treats, handfuls of alfalfa.
During our training sessions today, Charlie was able to rub Avalons front legs all the way to the ground, touch all the way to her flank and find some of her favorite scratchy spots under her mane.

Alvalon has a nice big and open trailer. She’s calm and doesn’t seem to mind the journey home so far. Six more hours to go!
