Journey's first attempt at lunging at liberty. We have been working on this for about a month, once a week, so four seperate sessions. The progress has been slow but steady. Today was his first time I let go of the lead to see what kind of connection we have on our circle. I am a firm believer in teaching liberty in an arena vs a round pen as it gives you a lot clearer picture of where your horses mind is so you can make adequate adjustments to help keep the connection. Often times key body signals from your horse can be missed in a round pen since the border helps hold their circle together.

For those that remember our very special rescue Tuxedo last February. We received some more updates and pictures and boy does it just warm my heart to see him thriving! From a medical nightmare to a true miracle he will forever make my heart smile. I'm forever blessed he found the perfect match after his recovery and training to live the happy life he deserves.

A Word About Trick Training

Trick training remains a highly controversial topic in the horse world. A lot of people feel not only is it often unnatural but unnecessary.
I have yet to hear someone tell a ballerina to stop dancing because it is unnatural as they were not born able to dance the way they train to dance and I feel training is very much the same way. Trick training has become one of the most effective tools in my tool belt when it comes to working with horses as it not only stretches the physical and mental boundaries of a horse and rider but it is a gateway to better communication. Every horse that I have trick trained prior to adding in liberty training has advanced in liberty way faster then those I have not. Though some horses may be more physically limited to tricks other horses may not be, I firmly believe that there are tricks out there for every horse and if you are in a dry spot or looking for a way to deepen your connection with you horse, trick training might be an answer!

There have been many times I've referred to a horse as a rescue but in reality its a two way street. The horse is the rescuer too. Here is to the old faithful souls that are there for their person through thick and thin. The ones that fill the voids in our hearts that the world leaves.
In a world full of short cuts, fast paces and great expectations, remember it's okay to take training slow. Your horse will give you everything it has in return.
I do not underestimate the power of the horse but I also do not consider training about proving who's in control. When you are in harmony with your horse there is no knowing better or being stronger, you are one.

Your horses collection is based off of two major components. Balance and strength and how well those two things are working together. Mojo's biggest struggle when we first started riding was his collection. Mostly because he lacked muscle and in turn was stiff and very easy to get off balance. I called him my giraffe for the first couple months as that's what I felt like when I was riding. His head was as high as mine he could not bend if his life depended on it. We would buldge with his shoulder on the rail and his hind end wobbling around and in towards the middle of the arena. Gosh am I glad I don't have any footage of the as I don't want to know how goofy we looked just knowing how weird it felt 😅 Lately Mojo has been really grasping the concept of collection and how much better it feels and has started to search for that stretch. He often extends past the vertical and he still puts a lot of his weight in the reins as his back hasn't gotten used to holding itself up consitently yet but he is trying harder everyday. His gait has gotten smoother and his stride has really opened up. Along with that he is able to easily pick up both canter leads now and hold himself around the bends getting a slower and more full canter. It's not perfect but I am sure enjoying the process and watching his awkward self turn into a more graceful gentlemen.

Some scenery from this week's trail. Just hitting those hills as much as we can before the weather changes. This guy is becoming quite the trail blazer... litterally 😂 he likes to make his own trails instead of following the actual trail, but gosh he loves his mountain adventures.

Why do we do it???

Because this right here... no horse or animal deserves to be neglected like this. Not only for there physical well being but also for their mental. It breaks my heart so many horses everyday have to go through so much stress on their body and mind. They are truely so resilient.
There is nothing more satisfying to me then to see that light start to return to a horses eyes and for them to enjoy life once again. Mojo has been a huge blessing to watch and though he still has some work ahead of him he is so much healthier now.

This, right here, is my favorite way to teach the canter!
As many of you know I like to get my horses working out on trails long before I teach buttons in the arena. I have always felt that teaching the mind before adressing the body has worked well for me and the horses. That being said a lot of them leave the arena with just a couple rides and before even riding at all three gaits.
I have found that long flat stretches are a wonderful place to give your horse the freedom the break into a lope at their own pace. Without the curves of an arena its easier for them to focus on their gate without any other distraction or stress.
Mojo found his canter today and was absolutely loving it. I am proud of him and another successful day in the books.

It's been a while since I've updated you all on any of the horses. It's been a tough recovery for Mojo. This beauty came from out of state showing up extremely underweight and sickly. He has been on the mends and his personality has really started to glow as he starts to feel better. According to the information given when he was rescued, he has had about 5-6 years off. Unfortunately I dont know any other history on him. I had decided to not start him under saddle for a while as between his weight and everything else going on we really just focused on ground work and bonding while waiting for his body to be healthy enough. Today he looks so much better and though he still has a long road ahead of him, he has successfully completed his fifth ride under saddle and first trail. He has the most goofy, sweet personality and is a joy to be around. I see a bright future for this boy.
