🚨 URGENT UPDATE: Something is wrong with Happy. 🚨 Based on our monitoring of the Bronx Zoo elephant exhibit, it’s our understanding that Happy, an elephant held alone in captivity at the Bronx Zoo by the Wildlife Conservation Society, hasn’t been outside at all in at least a week, likely longer. Elephant behavior is never normal in captivity, but this development is especially abnormal. During past years in the summer months, Happy was seen outside almost daily.

We’re greatly concerned about why Happy has been confined to the zoo’s elephant barn and why she hasn’t been seen in the exhibit’s main yard. Possible reasons she isn’t outside include:

1) She’s physically unable to leave the barn.
2) She’s under great psychological distress due to her prolonged isolation in an impoverished environment and is refusing to leave the barn.
3) She’s being denied access to the main yard.

We fear that the physical and psychological distress Happy has suffered from for decades has reached a point of crisis. As we saw in our litigation that sought to to an elephant sanctuary, the Bronx Zoo and WCS have a history of not telling the full story about Happy’s life at the zoo. For example, they claim that she doesn’t get along with other elephants when she in fact had a close elephant companion named Grumpy who was fatally attacked at the zoo.

To bring urgent attention to Happy, we’ve filed a complaint on her behalf with the USDA, which has the authority to investigate animal welfare concerns. Happy has a right to bodily liberty and should have been sent to a sanctuary long ago, but a 5-2 majority of the New York Court of Appeals declined to grant Happy her freedom. We filed this complaint now because it’s in Happy's interest for us to appeal to the USDA to, at a minimum, investigate and enforce the barebones standards of the Animal Welfare Act. They also need to get Happy out of the Bronx Zoo and to an accredited elephant sanctuary before it’s too late.

You can help by sharing this post and tagging U.S. Department of Agriculture asking them to immediately investigate. Thank you for helping raise the alarm for Happy.

Shared far and wide, but still no family in sight😔

It is now round three for our smiley hound buddy. Despite his best efforts, stellar skills, positive personality and adorable hound looks Ethan struggles to catch the attention of potential adopters. This boy may be on the bigger side at 60lbs but that only means there is more of him to love. Ethan has mastered his skills of house, crate and leash training while residing in his foster home. When he is not out stretching his long legs in the yard, he’s socializing with his human and canine pals. He’s an overall very impressive hound. His barks are few and far between, and he does not seem to be prey driven. While he loves to do a few laps in the backyard, he is just as content to go for a walk on the leash. He has become such an outstanding doggy citizen since coming into his foster home, which is why he is so surprised he can not catch an adopter’s eye. If you would like to wake up to this smiling hound every day, email [email protected] and fill out an application today!

Wishing you a happy 4th of July!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

During a 4th of July BBQ, a dog, Griffin treated himself to a chicken kabob—skewer and all.
Luckily, he made a full recovery after emergency surgery !!
PLEASE ENJOY THE 4th but watch your dogs on this holiday!!!

Here are our star-spangled tips for having a pet-safe celebration:

Deter counter surfing: Store food out of sight and make sure humans are aware of what pets are allowed to eat.

Offer a quiet retreat: Create a safe space away from doors and windows during fireworks.

Ensure ID tags are up to date: Frightened pets are prone to escape, so double-check collars and keep exits closed and monitored.

Spud is back to no fault of his own💔

He was on our urgent list last week, and he was adopted. But today he was returned with a euthanasia request form signed.

▪️The prior “owner” claims he is aggressive with children, yet we have watched families with young children interact with Spud here at the shelter. For a dog being so reportedly aggressive to children in the home, we also wonder why our emergency line was never contacted.

▪️The prior owner claimed to be in fear of her safety, but was able to load him into the car and drive him here. And stand in the lobby beside him while the euthanasia request was signed.

▪️We were told he is possessive of toys, yet he listens to the command leave it and allows us to take toys away.

▪️We were told he is completely destructive, yet they have crated him, so which is it?

▪️We offered training resources and they were refused.

Spud was given 5 days… 5 days to adjust from a shelter environment to a home, before his family gave up on him. We take feedback seriously, but we also know parts of this story are not adding up. We are not getting the full truth. And sadly, he has a slim chance of making it out of here alive given these statements.

Spud was relieved to be back and gave kisses to all the staff, he was excited to see familiar faces🥺

Simple Analogy—Why we can’t saved them all…

Every time rescue is asked to take an owner surrender- we have to somehow make room on our little raft for that dog.
When an owner says stuff like “I don’t have time to give them the best life” or “I have to move” or “they have too much anxiety” it really falls flat because that means if we bring them on the raft, another dog out there in the freezing water gets to die.

Every day rescue adjudicate life and death by gate keeping who can get on the boat.

Rescues and shelters are the tiny Rescue Boats.

The Ship is our community at large.

The iceberg is comprised of puppy mills, careless owners, backyard breeders, and those who won’t spay/neuter.
