Fourth of July Fireworks Fear - Fireworks can be very frightening for dogs. To prevent fear, it is best to keep dogs in a secure, sheltered environment such as a basement or bathroom, blocking out the noises and sights as much as possible. Insulate the environment by closing all windows, drawing the curtains and drapes and further muffling noises with continuous white noise at the source of the sound (window, door) by a metal commercial grade fan or a very loud white noise machine, a proven one is HoMedics White Noise Sound Machine. Exercise calms dogs and can engage them when food will not, so as much as possible run your dog through a hula hoop for 15 minutes (see my how to video https://youtu.be/Dw-izqcuapA ,) best 3x day especially in a.m. and could also add an instinctual, prey driven toy to also exercise by using a Flirt Pole. Provide plenty of active interactive toys such as Pyramid Toy, a frozen Kong stuffed with peanut butter (licking also helps calm a dog down) or bones to give your dog a relaxing job to work on as well as stuffed puzzle toys like Hide A Bee. Put your dog in a comfortable, sheltered environment before they become apprehensive or frightened, i.e. before the fireworks have started. Of course, it is optimal if you can stay with and keep them occupied through play and exercise, if possible. Be aware that panicked dogs can bolt and become lost so be sure to lock all doors and be aware when opening and closing doors or transporting your dog in any way
