When you find something you love so you have to get it in three colours 😅 still can’t decide which is my favourite mutation, they’re all so beautiful - if only I had the space to collect them all!

It was Confetti’s first time of trying Paula’s Bespoke Cookies. Safe to say they were a big hit and it’s so nice to find a treat that are actually ok for chinchillas to eat! 🍪❤️

Can you litter train chinchillas? That’s a question that often gets asked however the answer can be a bit mixed.

Firstly it’s not possible for chinchillas to control where they p**p as they do it almost constantly! However some chinchillas will use a litter tray for urine, which can help keep the cages that bit cleaner! It’s not really possible to “train” them as such, some take to it whereas others don’t. But for your best chance, fill a glass pyrex bowl with aspen or safe wood shavings and place a couple of large clean stones on top*. If you can, position this in their usual urine spot. You can also place a litter tray on the floor during playtime to help discourage mess on the floor!

*for safety reasons, stones should be nearly the size of your chinchilla’s head so they can’t choke. Pyrex dishes should be positioned at floor level in the cage.

Do you need to limit your chinchilla’s food intake? That seems to be a question that can get surprisingly heated and you may hear different answers to this.

However as long as you are feeding a quality, alfalfa based pellet and hay, in almost all cases there is no need to restrict these. You may hear some say that two tablespoons of pellets a day is sufficient for a chinchilla, and whilst this may act as a rough guide, there is no need to measure this out or hold back from filling up the bowl if it’s empty.

You will get a general feel for how much your chinchilla eats per day and whilst it can be a good idea not to overload the bowl so you can notice more quickly if there is a change to their eating pattern, this doesn’t mean you should restrict their intake either. Genuinely overweight chinchillas on a healthy pellet are very rare but restricting pellet intake can cause digestion issues.

Treats are a completely different issue though! These should be fed sparingly if at all and from the safe list only - remember no nuts, seeds, fruit or veggies!
