Central ND is having a BANNER YEAR for grasshoppers and Buffalo berries! The sharptails and pheasants are well fed now and will be throughout the late season and winter. This is good to see!

When you go to church Sunday morning, the Good Lord blesses your Sunday afternoon hunt! A quick limit of ND roosters on public land close to home. There’s one young bird in there that I normally wouldn’t have shot, but Eva’s work of tracking and pointing was outstanding - had to reward her effort with a retrieve!

Thoroughly enjoyed my time in MT this past week. It was an amazing experience of cover, game, great friends (new and old) and great fellowship. had some incredible dog work and some less than incredible dog work in the heat of the Montana sun! Can’t wait to go back.

Had an unexpected afternoon open, so why not have a weekday hunt! It was a nice wet, cool afternoon with the girls - got into multiple coveys and got our limit but ended up LOSING MY PHONE IN THE FIELD! Thank goodness for Life360 - I was able to walk within 20ft and called my phone to pick it up. It was a good day. 

* It was great to end on a double with both Cami and Eva locked up on a covey. 2 barrels, 2 birds, 2 retrieves.

CLOSING BELL: Late season Dakota hunting is a game of extremes - extreme temps, tough conditions with deep snow/thick cover, and wary grouped up birds. It is a test of man and dog to venture out and successfully harvest birds. Short, targeted hunts are a necessity and the last two days of the ND season proved to be fruitful.

I have grown to love solo late season hunts under extreme conditions. It makes my body hurt and my soul boil with life.

And that’s a wrap for 2021-22 season.

Late season public land roosters are always a treasure. My third bird to fill my limit went down but we could not recover him. We spent over half an hour trying to recover him in the midst of tons of bird tracks with no success. When the temperature is below zero, it makes you thankful for every contact you have!

Shot a ND double this afternoon - Colby vom Duck Creek (Jazzy) made both retrieves. The 2nd bird ran a couple hundred yards before catching up with him.

The Thanksgiving tradition continues - 3 generations of hunters, 2 generations of dogs this year (missing old Iris today). We were blessed with a couple birds on our quick hunt. Happy Thanksgiving!
