Summer has arrived with a vengeance.
Extreme heat warnings have been issued for most of the country. Heat index values could reach between 95-105 on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
Remember - if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your pets.

Please know that concrete and asphalt can burn your dog's feet. Concrete AND asphalt absorb and retain heat, making them much hotter than the surrounding air temperature. It can take as little as 60 seconds on an 80 degree day for a dog's paw pads to burn and blister. Before walking your dog, test the surface using the 'seven second rule' - if you can't comfortably put the back of your hand on the surface for seven seconds, the pavement is too hot for your dog. Dog's paw pads are not as tough as people think. They are made of skin and can be just as sensitive as the bottom of your feet. When walking your dog, you may want to opt for grassy areas, shaded paths or dirt trails during hot weather. Scheduling your walks early in the morning or later in the evening would be best for both you and your dog. 🐾🐶

Stay cool and hydrated, everyone.

*Artificial Turf & Sand are high-risk surfaces for dog's paw pads, as well. Artificial Turf can get even hotter than asphalt! Who knew? 🙂

This week's 'Thankful Thursday' feature is in memory of 'RJ', a fourteen year old boy who died on June 5, 2025. It is bittersweet.

During the pandemic, Second Chance for Animals rescued a Mama dog, Zoey, and her five puppies. We knew the puppies would find homes but what about sweet Zoey, the mom? To our surprise and gratitude, a lovely family, with three boys and two dogs wanted to adopt Zoey. We were so happy for Zoey! Zoey never looked back. She knew she was home! One of Zoey's human brothers, RJ, loved animals and welcomed Zoey with open arms. Zoey and RJ had five wonderful years together, until 14 days ago, when RJ, at the young age of 14 years, passed away 😢. RJ had Angelman Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, which ultimately took his life. Despite RJ's lifelong medical challenges,
he was always smiling and laughing. His smile could light up a room. The bond RJ had with his dogs, Priscilla, Moose (deceased), and Zoey, was strong and unbreakable. RJ loved them very much. 🐾

We, at Second Chance for Animals, are deeply saddened by RJ's passing but we are also 'thankful' that he blessed the world with his presence, his bravery, his fighting spirit, and, above all, his smile and his laughter.

Thank you, RJ, for making the world a better place and for taking such great care of Zoey.

Thinking of RJ's family at this very difficult time, his mom and dad, his brothers, Quentin and Preston, and his dogs, Zoey and Priscilla 💔.

Hello, Everyone -

Just a friendly reminder that I'm currently at Pet Supplies Plus on Portage. Next time you're in the area, please stop by to say, 'hello'.

A few things about me:

I enjoy the simple pleasures in life, i.e., napping throughout the day, grooming my beautiful snow-white coat and being scratched on my head and under my chin. I prefer dry food over wet food, and, believe it or not, I'm not much for cat treats! I have a very special fish toy that I take with me wherever I go! Sometimes, I even talk to him! Whoever adopts me, adopts my fish toy, too! 🙂I love cat trees. I spend hours perched high atop my cat tree looking out at the world. I would feel more comfortable and less anxious if I was the only animal in the home. Living on the streets all those years left me fearful and distrustful of other animals. I'm a much more confident feline when I have my family all to myself. I have never lived with children so an adult-only home would be the ideal home for me.

'Pebbles' was found living in a drainpipe behind Fresh Thyme Market in the Belden Park Crossings Shopping Plaza. Pebbles was very thin when she was rescued. She was also nursing an open bite wound on her tail.

Pebbles is a female and is estimated to be around 5-6 years old. She has been spayed.
Pebbles would do best in a quiet home.
She loves to be scratched behind her ears
and enjoys observing her environment from high atop the bookshelf!

Pebbles is a Chocolate Tortoiseshell.
The staff at the Vet Office all comment on Pebbles beautiful chocolate coat.

If you are interested Pebbles, please fill out the application below!

Our Story

We operate solely on donations and volunteer efforts. And, yes, it is a challenge. Do we euthanize animals we cannot place? NO! Absolutely not! The fact is, there is no animal that we can't place. Animals with disabilities or with chronic behavioral problems remain in foster care indefinitely. Fortunately, these cases are rare. Where are these animals housed? After being inoculated and given a clean bill of health, every animal is kept in a family environment. Of course, accommodations are limited, but foster homes provide a clean, safe environment where pets are handled frequently, responsibly and lovingly. Typically, they thrive under these conditions, making socialization and assimilation into a new home overwhelmingly successful. Do we take unwanted pets? Typically, no. While needy animals often come in multiples, new homes are carefully chosen...one at a time. Our facilities are usually full of rescues, but we will take photographs and basic information about your pet. Many people are very specific about the animal they wish to adopt. Your pet may be exactly what someone is seeking and we will assist in any way we can.
