SECRETS TO TRAINING RECALL ⬇️
🦴 Begin training in a quiet, distraction-free environment. Then *gradually increase* the level of distraction as your dog becomes more reliable.
🦴 In each training environment, *gradually increase* your recall distance.
🦴 Use a long line leash for safety (like the one in this video!).
🦴 Be consistent! Use the same recall command every time, and make sure everyone in the household does too.
🦴 Use treats or other rewards to positively associate the command. As your dog really starts to get it, start varying the rewards, like pets, toys, or even no reward.
🦴 BONUS - Train recall with a sit at the end of the command to ensure your dog stays at your side when you call them, like in this video (notice how she isn’t rewarded until after she sits!).
🦴 You can even make it a game! Hide from your dog and call them to find you.
🦴 Don’t use aversives if your dog finally comes after taking a long time! If you use it *after* they come, they will associating recall with negative consequences.
Training recall takes a lot of time, patience, and various training sessions in different training environments. The training process is ongoing, so even after your dog has mastered recall, continue to practice at random times and reinforce this behavior regularly.
This ensures that your dog will remain responsive to the recall command in any situation.

Calcifer came in with challenging behavioral issues, including reactivity and aggression. Watch how his training progressed during Leaps N Bound K9’s four-week program!
🐕🐕🐕
We’re going to be honest. Sending your dog to a trainer will not flip a switch in making all your dog’s problems disappear, as if they were never there. However, getting the professional help from those who specialize in canine behavior is truly a HUGE step in the right direction in guiding your dog (and even you as the owner!) toward a more fulfilling life.
Training a dog with major behavioral issues requires a lot of patience and very gradual exposure. Just like humans going through life, each dog progresses at their own pace.
When we witnessed another dog (who was only a few feet away) bark at Calcifer, we were so proud to see him stay neutral and keep his composure. He’s truly come a long way!

Building Confidence on the A Frame
🐕 Engaging your dog in activities as simple as jumping onto elevated surfaces or navigating an A-frame can work wonders in building their confidence and keeping their mind and body engaged!
The A-frame serves as an intriguing challenge, demanding balance, focus, physical fitness, and courage from your canine. Even more, the presence of a guiding hand cultivates trust and strengthens the bond between the dog and handler.
Not only are the dogs rewarded with a treat, but they are rewarded with a true sense of accomplishment. This newfound confidence goes beyond the frame and carries throughout other physical obstacles they may encounter.
Gus here began a bit timid. Despite the added challenge of a wobbly A-frame (which was later stabilized), he still was able to overcome the challenge. We were so proud of how far he had come!

Pack Walk with Leaps N Bounds K9
Leaps N Bounds K9 isn't just about training your dog and letting you be on your merry way. When you train with Leaps N Bounds, you become a part of a community that has embarked on a journey to build a better life for their dog.
Last week, we had our first-ever Pack Walk with those who previously trained with Leaps N Bounds K9. This casual event served as a great opportunity for past trainees to polish up their work if needed, as well as help others by allowing their dogs to socialize and contribute to a nice, neutral environment.
🐕 We are so thankful to have graduates join us on our Pack Walk, and it truly warms our heart to see our Leaps N Bounds K9 community grow!

🐾 Practicing this Place exercise can benefit most in building discipline and focus. Developing these two elements allows dogs to redirect their energy and attention to the owner and retain their overly excited behavior.
While dogs often become hyperactive and impulsive when they encounter stimuli that excite them (such as guests arriving, other animals, or throwing a ball), putting a dog on this elevated place provides a structured and calming activity for them to engage in.
Dogs thrive on structure and clear expectations. By providing your companion with clear instructions and a predictable routine, you’re also giving the dog opportunities to succeed, thus building their overall confidence!
