“ a spaniel can’t heel”
“A spaniel will always pull”
“It’s impossible to teach heel to a spaniel”
“It’s a spaniel, of course it will pull”

There is such a misconception in the dog world that you can’t teach a spaniel to heel and that a spaniel will never walk nicely and focus whilst on a lead.
If the statements above were facts then why would this 7 month old springer be walking beautifully on a lead (video to follow).
If a trainer tells someone a spaniel can’t heel what they are really saying is, they don’t understand how a spaniels brain works and how to change what is natural to them.

At rolon dogs we understand how to teach any dog to walk nicely on a lead no matter what the breed, age, history.
With a few simple corrections to how the dog is being handled any dog can walk well on a lead, this clip took 10 mins from start to finish to achieve and is by no means perfect however she is heeling for a few steps which is more than can be said for most spaniels.

The police dog who died following an incident at Watermead Park yesterday (Wednesday) has been named as Police Dog Zyla.

Tributes have been paid to PD Zyla by the force with Chief Constable Rob Nixon today describing how Zyla “will always be remembered for her bravery and service.”

Welfare support is also being provided by the force to PD Zyla’s handler and to officers and staff across force.

CC Nixon said: “Our police dogs are an integral part of Team Leicestershire playing a crucial critical role in some of our most dangerous operations.

“Zyla died in the line of duty and will always be remembered for her bravery, her dedication and her service. I know many across force are deeply saddened by the loss of PD Zyla and I share in this sorrow. My thoughts remain with Zyla’s handler and all those who have been impacted. We continue to provide full welfare support to all those in force who have been affected.

“Yesterday's events are a stark reminder of the inherent dangers associated with policing and I want to extend a massive thank you to all the officers who assisted during the incident. Your bravery and professionalism in the face of such an incident are commendable.

“I would also like to thank members of the public for your kind messages which we have received, including the messages of support for PD Zyla’s handler. This is truly appreciated by us all.”

As a mark of respect, the force flag is currently being flown at half mast at force headquarters. This mark of respect is carried out by the force when an officer or member of staff has died while in the line of duty.

A remembrance event will also be arranged in force for PD Zyla.

CC Nixon will also be wearing a silver band with Zyla’s name on it while undertaking the Police Unity tour later this month. The Police Unity tour is held every year and is in honour of those officers who have died in the line of duty.

Further information in relation to yesterday’s incident and our appeal for information can be found on our press release here - https://orlo.uk/mRkTj

Do you have a reactive dog? Are walks something you dread?

Reactive dog owners need help from other dog owners. Dog on A Lead Day was created for many reasons and at the forefront of our mind was to help raise awareness that popping your dog on a lead for a few minutes could change the world to a reactive dog and their owner, not to mention help them with any training and rehabilitation they may have invested in to help their dog.

If you do nothing else - follow this tiny bit of advice and respect other dogs and their needs. After all we all love dogs and want what's best for them.❤️

Lovely walk today with cooper working on being confident when out without his sister.

I’ve had the pleasure of walking cooper and his sister bel for the last few months now and it’s amazing to see the difference in him now when out alone to when I first started walking him and it does really make the job worth while to see the impact you have on the dogs life and to see the relationship developing with the dogs.

Honestly can’t say this enough!!

As an owner of a reactive dog this is a common occurrence and can set us back months of training.

All reactive dog owners work hard to try and get our dogs to be neutral around around other dogs but this can’t happen while we have people allowing there off lead dogs to run up to us, the amount of times a week I have to ask people to recall there dogs away from either my dog or clients reactive dogs is insane.

Just because your dog is friendly,
doesn’t mean mine is.
just because your dog is friendly and wants to play, doesn’t mean my dog wants to play with yours.
Just because you want your dog to say hello doesn’t mean I want my dogs to interact with you.

If you can’t recall your dog away from distractions then they shouldn’t be off lead, as stated in the dangerous dogs act, a dog only has to cause distress to a person to be considered dangerous, section 3 of the dangerous dogs act refers to a dangerous dog as being dangerously out of control and causing distress.

Don’t be the reason a dogs training is put back months, have some compassion for fellow dog owners, we are all just trying to our best by our dogs.

Loose lead walking

Having your dog be able to walk on a loose lead and walk focusing on you and not the external distractions and environment is one of the best things you can do with your k9 companion.

There are so many scenarios where you may need your dog to walk on a loose lead, maybe you are walking down a busy road, maybe you are walking through a field with livestock, maybe you are walking past a reactive dog. There are too many to name.

Our loose lead workshop will teach your dog to walk nicely on a lead and not pull.

Pulling has a place in the world for dogs but there is a time and a place, many dogs can’t distinguish when it is appropriate to pull and when it isn’t and many simply don’t know how to walk nicely on a lead and not pull. It is our responsibility as owners to teach our dog these skills and it is our responsibility to teach our dog these skills in a kind and ethical way.

At rolon dogs we teach everything in a positive reinforcing way, we use kind and ethical methods to teach dogs the skills they need in life, loose lead walking being one of these.

Confidence

Having a confident dog is an amazing thing, just look at Otis today doing something he never has before, the first time he has ever seen a tug bar but he has still played with it. For a lot of dogs new things and new environments are scary for them and lots shut down in these new environments.

To build a confident dog you need trust, the dog needs to trust you and needs to believe that what you are telling them to do is safe, without this it is very difficult to teach new behaviours to your dog.

To build trust with your dog you need to have a relationship with them, a positive relationship, a relationship like you would have with a member of your family, your dog is not an object it is a living being that has emotions.

At rolon dogs we use these emotions and relationships to train our dogs and clients dogs, everything we do is to better your relationship with your k9 companion.
