Lots of articles in the news came out in the last 24h about Marimo balls sold by Petco in the USA having zebra mussels in them!!

We deal with different suppliers who are mostly fishermen harvesting the marimo naturally into lakes, and some of the lakes contain zebra mussels. However, the suppliers manually remove any adult mussel, the shipment is sent with a phytocertificate and is often inspected by the CBSA. Then, upon receiving and before resending, we always soak our marimo into a bleach solution to kill any mussel larvae or other bacteria that could be hiding into the balls. We also hold lots of Marimo in stock since 4 years and we never had any mussel in our aquariums and our customers are always 100% satisfied with quality!

The problem isn't the Marimo balls, it's the stores that had live adult zebra mussels for exhibit in their aquariums.... They import directly from eastern european fishermen and put the moss in their aquariums right away whitout quarantine or washing, while the moss can and will contain zebra mussel larvae. Now they are forced to dispose of all their product. You can also easily find ick and other pests and diseases when buying from this kind of store chain who don't seem to care about their product...
