Wayzgoose 2023 is fast approaching!

Join us on Saturday April 29th, from 9am to 5pm for Grimsby Public Art Gallery’s annual Book Arts Fair.

Featuring press printers, papermakers, bookbinders and so much more, Wayzgoose is an annual event that attracts not only the private press and the people of Grimsby, but also lovers of books and the book arts from across Canada and the United States. Book art artisans and supporters eagerly await this annual gathering where they can renew old and create new friendships, display the fruits of their labour for the past year, and share the joys and sorrows of operating independent presses.

The artists attending Wayzgoose are dedicated to preserving the past glories of hand press printing and passing on the traditional techniques used by book artisans to other makers and creatives so that they may find creative ways to keep the tradition alive.

Come join us on Saturday April 29th to observe, learn, and explore something new! In addition to the much anticipated Fair, this year we will also have a schedule of workshops directly related to the book arts including papermaking, bookbinding, and printmaking! Click the link below to learn more.

Featuring editions and artists from our Wayzgoose archives, you will have an opportunity to experience this important, longstanding project.

So what exactly is Wayzgoose?

Wayzgoose originated as a presentation given by a master printer to his workers each year on or about St Bartholomew's Day. Later, the word came to refer to an annual outing and dinner for the staff of a printing works or the printers of a newspaper.

Wayzgoose at Grimsby Public Art Gallery first started in 1979 as a small gathering of friends and colleagues. Each year on the last Saturday in April practitioners of book related crafts including: letterpress printers, printmakers, paper makers, and hand bookbinders, gather to present their works to the public, renew connections with colleagues, and share their expertise with the next generation of artists and artisans
