is a non-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to rescuing dogs in need, rehabilitating if necessary, and then adopting to approved homes where they will be loved as part of a family while also encouraging responsible pet care and striving to increase awareness of the consequences of pet overpopulation through educational programs and materials. We do not operate from a shelter but rather a

network of foster homes in different areas of the state so it may not always be possible for you to meet more than one of our dogs at a time. While this can be frustrating for a prospective adopter, the foster home setting allows us to better evaluate the dogs' temperaments and help them adjust to family life. We deal primarily with dogs under 30 pounds but will also take in larger dogs if a foster home is available.

🐾 Medical Monday Update: Roxie 🐾
Sweet Roxie has been with us just over a week after suffering a brutal attack by a larger dog. She was surrendered to animal services for euthanasia, but they saw the same thing we did—a gentle, loving soul who deserved a chance. 💔

Due to the severity of her wounds, we had to wait several days before surgery as much of the surrounding skin was dying. Last Thursday, the dead tissue was removed, a drain was inserted and a tie-over bandage was placed to protect the open area and encourage healing.

Roxie is having her bandages changed every day or two and we’re monitoring closely. Our next step will be a skin graft once the wound bed is ready.

Through every poke, prod, and painful moment, Roxie has remained an absolute sweetheart. Her resilience and gentle spirit inspire us daily. 💕

🍉 Happy National Watermelon Day from Calypso & Cerise! 🍉

These two cuties are soaking up summer and sweet vibes while they wait for forever families! Calypso (almost 5 months old) and Cerise (almost 6 months old) may not be related, but they’ve become the best of buddies—and they both agree that watermelon is definitely a pup-approved treat. 😋🐾

Be sure to keep an eye out for our Watermelon Pawty later today… it’s going to be juicy, silly, and full of tail wags! 🍉🎉

🌻 Happy National Sunflower Day from Calypso! 🌻

Just like a sunflower, our sweet Calypso turns toward the sunshine—and brings it wherever he goes! 🌞 This almost 5-month-old bundle of joy is bursting with energy, love, and a heart full of hope as he waits for a forever family to bloom in his life. 💛

Calypso has overcome so much already and is growing into a happy, playful pup who lights up every room he’s in. He’s ready to plant roots with someone special—could it be you?

🎉 1.5 YEARS… and still waiting. 💔 Meet Remi, our sweet, treat-loving Rat Terrier who has been with Canine Castaways for far too long.

Remi is almost 5 years old now and has spent a third of his life waiting for a family to call his own. He loves going on adventures with volunteers. He’s incredibly sweet, gets along well with other dogs, and will happily trade kisses for cookies. 🍪🐾

We don’t know why he keeps getting overlooked—he’s got the perfect blend of calm and playful, and his gentle heart makes him a joy to be around. 💕

Remi deserves more than a kennel. He deserves a couch to nap on, a lap to cuddle in, and someone to love him forever. Check out his original photos in the comments.

They may not be related, but they’re both shining examples of why mutts make the BEST companions. Calypso is an almost 5-month-old boy with a playful spirit and a heart full of joy, while Cerise is an almost 6-month-old girl who’s sweet, spunky, and full of personality. 💛🐾

Both of them have overcome their own challenges including parvo and are now ready to find a forever family to call their own. They’re loving, resilient, and totally unique—everything we celebrate on National Mutt Day!

These adorable siblings were born into rescue after we saved their mom, and now—nearly a year later—they’re still waiting for families of their own. 💔

Pebbles is the sweet and spunky sister, while Bamm-Bamm is the gentle goofball brother. Together, they’re the perfect example of why mutts are so special—full of love, personality, and that little extra something you won’t find anywhere else. 🐶✨

They’ve grown up surrounded by care and kindness… but what they really need now is a forever home. Could that be with you? 💛

Changing the world one dog at a time since 2003!

In 2003, we weren't sure if one person could make a difference but we knew that we wanted to see change. So we founded Canine Castaways with the motto "Saving one dog won't change the world but it will change the world for that dog". When we rescued a tiny, sick chihuahua puppy who we named Uno our world changed.

Since then we have rescued over 2300 dogs. We know that there is a home out there for every dog we rescue and will wait patiently until it is found. We try very hard to place dogs in their "forever home"; however, there are times that things don't work out. When we rescue a dog, we are committed to that dog for its entire life and will never hesitate to accept one of our castaways back into our care. Our focus is on quality of care rather than the number of dogs saved. We are very proud to work closely with our team of veterinarians to ensure each dog rescued receives the best medical care possible. If it's needed, it's done! Of course, this does lead to the challenge of constant fundraising but at 16 years old, Uno still reminds us that the extra work is worth it to change the world one dog at a time.
