Zoology Terminology: Cutaneous Respiration is a form of respiration in which gas exchange occurs across the skin or outer integument of an organism rather than gills or lungs.

Did You Know?: Although the helbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) has lungs, it breathes primarily through the folds of its skin.

All But Not All- All Toads are Frogs but not all Frogs are Toads.

True toads are members of the Bufonidae family, which in turn falls under the order of amphibians commonly called frogs and known officially as Anura, meaning "without a tail." Most toads have a thicker, drier skin that permits them to live away from water longer than most frogs.

Did You Know?: The male Eastern American Toad (Bufo americanus) not only climbs trees but he can reach dizzying heights for his size, often climbing up to 6 feet (1.83 m) and in some cases, considerably higher. The height may help the toad in mating, possibly by expanding the distance his call can be heard or even to impress a female by showing off his strength in climbing. Unlike tree frogs, toads lack special pads that aid in climbing. Rather the toad digs in with its strong claws, much like a mountain climber uses crampons.

Did You Also Know?: The Red-Eyed Tree Frog (Agalychnis callidryas) green color is ideal for blending in to its lush arboreal home as it sleeps, however if awoken by a potential predator, the animals bright eyes can be affective at startling a predator to consider an easier meal.

Happy World Camel Day! To celebrate we thought it was time for you to Know Your Camelidae! Here is a look at the entire Camelidae. Most of the species in this family exist today only in domestication, but there are still some wild counterparts. Camelids were domesticated 5,000 years ago to serve as pack animals and to provide milk, meat and a source for fleece. They can be found in Africa (Dromedary Camel), Asia (Bactrian Camel) and South America (all the rest). Now You Know your Camels!

Special thanks to Anna Jemmett, communications manager at Wild Camels for helping make some improvements to this graphic. Be sure to to follow their page and learn more about wild camels at: www.wildcamels.com

Now You Know: Reticulated Giraffe (Giraffa reticulata)
Even though a giraffe’s neck can be eight feet (2.44 m) long and weigh up to 600 pounds (272.2), they still only have seven neck vertebrae. That is equal to the same number humans have!

Happy World Giraffe Day! To celebrate, we thought it was time for you to Know Your Giraffes! There has been some debate over the years as to how many species and subspecies of giraffe there are, but recent research has determined that there are four Giraffe species which include:
1. Masai
2. Reticulated
3. Northern (3 subspecies)
4. Southern (2 subspecies)
IUCN currently recognized only one Giraffe species, which it lists as Vulnerable with some of the subspecies being listed as Endangered. Unfortunately, giraffe numbers are in decline. Threats include fragmentation, degradation, and loss of habitat, disease, poaching, the growth and expansion of the human population, war and civil unrest.
Giraffes are among the world's most popular animals. Hopefully, all of the species and subspecies will be around well into the future so that ours and many future generations can share in the appreciation of these awesome animals. Now You Know Your Giraffes! Please share and spread the word to others. Happy Giraffe Day!

What is your favorite giraffe?

Special thanks to Dr. Julian Fennessy and the rest of our friends at the Giraffe Conservation Foundation for providing expert support on this graphic. Please follow their page and visit their website below to learn more about Giraffes and the good work they do to protect them.
