Louis Wain was a household name a hundred years ago - his cats sold lightbulbs and soap, and they were sent all over the world on postcards. They even helped recruit soldiers in the First World War. Kathryn Hughes’ brilliant new book (Catland) takes a deeper look at Wain’s somewhat troubled life and charts the rise and fall of his career.
I’ve always found Wain’s world of cats fascinating, and as I learn more about this incredible artist, I can’t help but feel a deep sadness that Wain was often misunderstood and taken advantage of during his life. When I started Cheshire & Wain back in 2013, I made a promise to Wain in his memory to keep Catland alive by keeping our feline friends at the centre of our universe in every decision we make.
